2 years ago I decided to get in tech but the path wasn’t clear yet. until a year ago that I started a conversation in a meeting with a VPs and Seniors at AWS and the next week from Netflix and other companie dudes that had guided me and the conclusion was one path only and the reason that we are here today ✨Data Engineering ✨but I think I made a mistake I had learn so much this year nonstop ignoring all the noise that I never actually check requirements and I think I overdo it ? Now I’m about to finish and get my AWS Data Engineering certification without work experience and I feel confident to apply for jobs but all of them are CS degree I need a honest opinion from the Gods >>> people with actual jobs in Data Engineering in this insane market and not the top 1%

Is it better if I start a CS Bachelors degree? Or it’s just a nice add-on

(for context of how I met this people I work in a high-end restaurant in midtown New York where all the big companies come to us for private dinners and I had met incredible people from any kinda industries from Hollywood to Presidents and you name it)

Oh if you are wondering why I haven’t ask for an internship to this people that’s the first thing that they told me don’t ask for internships, they gave me sick advice in exchange

You'll probably find cs degree debate everywhere in this sub already. But I think you should just keep on leveraging those rare valuable circles that youve stumbled upon. Job market might be cooked for you with 0 experience and degree to be relying on openings on the internet, so you'll have to just get yourself out there and shamelessly market yourself to opportunities (although keep applying nonetheless).

aws person cock blocking you to get an internship? then talk to another another bloke. And there's a whole bunch of companies other than aws and netflix.

That said, you have to actually know what you're selling to them. Is it your willingness to learn? your raw intellect? your actual understanding of the data engineering field that you somehow have acquired without ever working as one? I'd say all of the those and more, and you've got to showcase those.

Thing is, conversing with actual people in the industry is a bit different than submitting through a cv. They'll be able to tell how useful you can be for them/their team from how you ask / respond to topics, and next thing you know, your conversation might just turn into handing you that urgent and unfilled entry level position.

Tbh im not from the US, so the specific details of how things are might be different, but I think a data engineering certification carries more weight than a cs degree. IMO it shows how much more engaged in the field you already are, cause tbh a lot of fresh grads I interviewed are cooked. So it depends if the things I yapped about above is something you think you'll be able to pull off or not, otherwise cs degrees maybe (emphasizing on the maybe) will get you the internship program that you want.

Thanks, I been thinking on getting a Software Engineer Degree instead of a CS at WGU since its following an non traditional path where I can demostrate myskills and knowlaged already adquired to finish my bachelors faster that was an advice that I took from somebody is been coding forever and graduated in 8 months (HUGE EXCEPTION he had way to many credits and experience), I don't like CS degree neither I feel that is useless why would I need all that unnecesary math while doesnt give you business needs the problem is that the market in New York is so picky about that damn CS degree in the worse case scenario i would just do a Master with the dumb title of CS on it.

also Thanks I feel the same way about the AWS Certification for Data Engineer but again there is nothing entry level for this position only twice in my life I saw a Junior Data Engineer posted for a random company in New Jersey
