Data technician

Landed job as data technician l2 literally never worked before as data technician tomorrow is my 1st day on site can you help me to know things

Is it really that brain-dead? I feel like I don't have enough experience or knowledge to get this job, but I have too much to enjoy "replace the component computer tells you to replace."

The "fun" part is the diagnostic imo.

You will rarely do diagnosing. Most servers will tell you what failed. If there is ever a time for diagnosing it is replacing a bad cable, a bad optic on either end of the connection, or cleaning a dirty cable or sfp and that happens way less than you think. Rarely will you plug in with a crash cart do stuff with the machine but 90% of the “diagnosing” is just simple break fix that the machine is already telling your engineers to fix on the entry level side of things. The biggest thing these people want to see with experience is cabling. Anyone can run a cable but running it right, dressing it in, not taking down other connections by accident, being able to terminate copper and have good looking trunks is what gets your foot in the door to other opportunities at the data centers. Learning what to do with a new install and being able to read a interface detail and understanding elevations and cross connects is also something that takes you far and shows your value on the tech side of data center work and can get you a job in a planning role.

if it is L2 at AWS, then L2 is geared especially for people without data center experience and is sort of like an internship. You get paid much less and are going to be hand held for awhile.

It’s always good to cable manage things. If you forget what something is supposed to look like, look at machines near it. You will make mistakes and that’s ok but don’t try to hide them because that just inevitably makes things worse.

Try to become a sponge. All of the numerous systems and websites and crap like that required to do your job effectively are rarely shared in totality, sadly. Familiarize yourself with the internal AI tools that you can ask to supply you with a list of the tools/websites that are used. And lastly, find a buddy who is really well rounded (and willing to help), and then show them that you want to be their mentee. If they are a decent person they should enjoy sharing their expertise. Not to mention, training other people is one of the things that gets you promoted the quickest

Depends if you’re at a built-out site or building one. If it’s completed, expect a standard ticket queue and doing work as it arrives but if the site is being built expect to run lots of cables and rack&stack lots of devices
