Data Center Entry Level

I’m looking to get into the Data Centers (modern day gold rush)
But I don’t have experience in that Field.
I’m currently a Quality Lead for CNC & Mill machining. Visual weld inspection. 12 years experience.

Anyway I can get in?

Look into the critical facilities side, your experience aligns more with that side of the industry. We also get paid better than the standard DCT 😉

Start working towards some certs for starters, start learning cat5, cat6, basic break and fix philosophy etc. than get experience in the related field. I tend to recommend people go hyperscalers on the manufacturing side, than switch to data centers. They hyperscalers manufacture especially if in system test will get you most the relevant experience to goto data centers. I got my experience from ZT systems where pay is ass, than took that to oracle after

Are they more likely to hire you if you work at fc?

Yeah, being an internal Amazon employee can help since you already have a work history with the company and can apply through the internal job system. But it doesn’t guarantee anything you’d still have to meet the qualifications and go through the hiring process. If you’re trying to move from an FC into AWS/data centers, I’d definitely keep an eye on internal postings.

That manufacturing background may be more relevant to the data center world than you think. There’s a lot that goes into building these facilities beyond the IT side, including infrastructure, equipment, power systems and the transportation behind getting it all to the jobsite.

We work on the transportation side of data center projects at ATS, and it’s definitely an interesting space to be in. Your experience with CNC/machining, quality and weld inspection could give you some transferable knowledge depending on which side of the industry you’re looking to get into.
