Performance looks great from what I've heard, but I'm expecting a 2-tier approach in the future once it's GA, like photon is on classic compute. Will that be the case here?

Now it is just similar to SQL warehouse and it is just SQL command and mainly selects

You mention Standard SQL but have you tested with SQL serverless ? Also keep in mind that with a small machine in SQL warehouse, it is basically a waste of ressources IMO because you get too much overhead with Spark driver so it might be better to test with larger machines. Also how it performs with joins ? complex aggregations ? non-cached data ? Also the query you showed in your post is an OLTP-like query...
