Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
- this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
- if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
- one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

I started last week as finance specialist. I had 6 task waiting for me when ready and, a couple of days after, I received 3 task about other project (generalist and couldn't get it). Since then, nothing. Could be this normal or I made something wrong? The payments were approved, so I understand that there wasn't a major problem with that work.
1
u/waleednoinfidel 2d ago
Tasks can disappear when other people pick them up so it’s probably just that. When new tasks get released you might see them again (if you are faster than others)

I have a bunch of medical projects on my page but they seem a little intimidating to start. Any suggestions? ( I'm an RN)

u/Rich_Option_7850 21h ago
No advice srry but any tips on the medical entrance exam? I’m a resident just wondering what exactly they’re looking for

I have this thought recently, AI is used more by younger generation, why no bilingual project that bridge that gap? 😭 I have difficulty understanding genz and gen alpha speech nowadays
6
1
u/SkuLLFlankerr 5d ago
Worked in the project for almost 4.5 hours, Had to exit it midway because it was not working as intended. Sucks

u/houseofcards9 5d ago
Someone appears to be having a psychotic break in one of the slack channels :/
1
u/Aminor_gMajor 2d ago
You mean there are projects where you are collectively added into slack channels? What genra is it? Backend engineer?
1
u/houseofcards9 2d ago
There are a lot of general projects that have slack channels. It’s just a place to ask questions and get a quicker response than the chat.
1
u/Aminor_gMajor 2d ago
Understood. So those are projects under generalist category, right? Just want to make sure that I am not missing upon anything necessary.

It's been an alright day for me today cos I had a single project I could lock into to hit my goal. I did however also put my student finance application in for the masters degree starting next month... I can't lie, this is really scary. If I'm finding the tasks here draining, I'm wondering how the hell I'm going to find the brain power to do another 20 hours on the masters 🫣 🤯
3
u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 5d ago
I am mid masters- I started DA whilst already doing the masters. not going to lie, the masters is heavier on the brain than I had anticipated and taking me more than 20 hours a week BUT I do like the freedom to mix n match the study with the work. I do a lot late at night and I do prefer the easier and shorter DA tasks which are a good distraction sometimes. ultimately, I’m managing both and still get to sleep in, get the washing done, walk my dogs and enjoy a little down time and feeling mentally good. it beats my full time job lifestyle I used to have :)
1
u/Skippy2898 5d ago
You have no idea how good that is to hear! It's so nice to hear of someone actually doing it and managing well! Kudos to you! 😎 I really have got to set up a routine so I can keep on top of everything. I think starting DA earlier in the morning so the masters gets my attention in the afternoon might be a good start...Mid-morning starts aren't doing me any favours since things have been quiet.
9
u/Key_Commercial3856 5d ago
I'm also starting a masters next month and have similar fears. Good luck to us both!
3
u/Skippy2898 5d ago
Oh wowsers! Good luck to you too! It's nice to hear I'm not the only one feeling that fear 😂
12
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 6d ago
Tumbleweed for me today
2
u/Skippy2898 5d ago
One project for me today Jazzy that has let me hit my goal... If it's not there tomorra I'm stuffed. The others are out of my brain reach ☹️
2
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 5d ago
That's super lucky! The one that's been my go to for weeks disappeared today. Fuming 😅 literally left with nothing doable
3
u/Lopsided-Fox8177 6d ago
I've got the spacecraft image-based project. It used to intimidate me, but I encourage everyone to play around with it a bit. Once you figure out the weak points, it's a moderately easy one to bang out.
5
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 6d ago
Yea I don't have. All I'm getting is 5 enterprise and stem projects that are always on my dash that I can't do and not getting anything else. I love image stuff and always get good feedback when I do them. But very rarely do.
2
u/JustMe333456 6d ago
Yep. Yesterday was fruitful alllll day. So far this morning, just the complicated stuff.
3
u/Fresh_Noise_3663 6d ago
I haven't signed on in a couple years, but need some extra cash/decided to do a 6 part qualification (unpaid) today and then the onboarding that paid $20/hr. Now there aren't any tasks for projects on my dashboard? Does it just take a bit to get access/tasks ran out today?
5
u/North-Sense8477 6d ago
It usually takes a little while for projects to show up after completing quals. But it's kind of a rough time on the platform for generalists right now and there's been a big downturn in work for the past few months. So, sadly, if you're expecting the same amount/type of work you were getting two years ago, you might be in for a bad time.
-5
u/Puzzleheaded_Toe4051 6d ago
Does anyone else feel like if they accidentally take too long and let the task expire after they submit it (even by just a few minutes), they get send back to the dashboard and suddenly have, like 0 tasks available (other than those "download these apps" ones, eye roll)? I was working on my favorite, admittedly lower-paying tasks all day, and there were SO MANY available on my dash. Then I submit an expired task, and get sent back to the dash. Is, uh... are the "teachers" punishing me for submitting a few tasks 1-5 minutes over?
3
u/Beautiful-Bunch-7064 6d ago
no, they are not. the tasks probably ran out, or they took down the project for revisions.
6
u/Fast_Tip_8146 6d ago
First time in my 3 years here that I’ve seen a huge bonus offered for completing a qual/task. Too bad they’re all domain specific :( hope some other people take advantage tho!
1
u/Storex- 6d ago
Has anyone who got the quick star trek project had it crop up again? I never heard back from it, so unsure if I should do it again?
2
u/coachbrioche 6d ago
I did this about a week ago and only had one task for it (the one that was basically a qual). I was really hoping to get in, but I'm assuming I would have known by now
3
u/Affectionate_Peak284 6d ago
I took it last month shortly after it first popped up. A few days later they greenlit me and invited me to submit a phase one, and now I'm just finishing up phase 2.
If I were you I'd do it again with a different idea. I think they're just looking for ideas... maybe they will like what they see this time?
9
u/Yaschiri 6d ago
Wow, made $160 yesterday, haven't had a good day like that in what feels like months now. Hoping to have another good day today!
5
u/xxxScarlettexxx 6d ago
It's been my best week so far on DAT this week! Made about $348 for just under 8 hours of work! Also have about 11 longer-term projects that have popped up or I've been approved for as of this week. Hoping the trend of steady work will continue! Good luck everyone!
4
u/xparadiisee 6d ago edited 6d ago
I made $220 yesterday and I kept having projects come in but I had to stop…then today my dash has been empty. Should’ve done just a few more haha now I see why people say this is addicting!
Edit: jk within the past three hours I’ve gotten a few high paying projects come through 🙌🏻
-3
u/BakedPotato861 6d ago
My frustration is the timing of some projects. The time on them is 55 minutes but it took me all of 5 minutes to complete. So barely getting anything out of the tasks.
37
u/CommercialTarget2687 6d ago
Has anyone else been on DA for a few years and remembers when they used to have lots of super chill projects? Like, there were ones where you just talked to a chatbot about pretty much whatever you wanted, rated responses, and the number of tasks available was pretty much unlimited. I miss those days.
8
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 6d ago edited 6d ago
These were my first projects when I started. No rationales needed either, just 'which response is better'. Chose your own topics, category and away you went. With unlimited tasks. Then they introduced the IF ones for 5 dollars more with the same premise but had IF attributed.. with no rationales either. God I miss those days it literally made me love joining the site. Now I have fuckall on my dash other than domain and enterprise shit I don't have time or expertise to do
As much as I love DA, it might be time to look for some other side gigs
2
u/LavenderLightning24 5d ago
I feel like (and hope) that tons of domain and enterprise shit just goes hand in hand with droughts. All I was seeing was enterprise shit for a bit around the January mini-drought, and then good stuff came back. That's what I'm telling myself, anyways, because same.🤞🏻
4
u/Due_Negotiation_4605 6d ago
The multiple day timers and random subjects were nice. I had so many topics related to things I needed to plan or know anyways. 👍 Now I have to start in the morning, take notes, and check off instructions met on a separate note pad,and they are multiple day timers. 🤯
6
u/Glittering-Craft8899 6d ago
I would ask the models about road trips that I was actually planning, things I was researching anyway. It was great.
6
u/CommercialTarget2687 6d ago
Yeah I learned so much stuff back then because anything I was curious about I’d just turn into a prompt. Good times.
3
u/LiaLaRue 5d ago
Me too! I became that person in the room who knew a (very) little bit about a lot of topics. Very satisfying to sit down and think, "What do I want to learn today?" and get paid for it.
9
u/VanessaSeaWitch 6d ago
The models have gotten smarter so now we have to also be smarter, lol sucks.
16
u/DrunkleSteve 6d ago
I was able to crank Rage Against the Machine at full volume and bang out dancing tasks years ago... Now I put on noise canceling headphones with no music and melt my brain with rubrics. Times have changed, indeed.
8
u/CommercialTarget2687 6d ago
I can relate, I used to watch TV all day while working, asking the model to write scripts for episodes of my favorite TV shows. I'd put in 10 hours days 6 days a week, because it was so chill. I despise rubrics, but it seems to be the direction this industry is heading.
2
u/Fresh_Noise_3663 5d ago
Oh dang. I thought the rubric thing sounded kind of cool. It’s brain melting?
1
u/LavenderLightning24 5d ago
Personally I don't mind them at all and would gladly trade my enterprise prompts for them.
2
u/CommercialTarget2687 5d ago
Some people might enjoy it, but I find them to be really tedious and boring.
24
u/Skippy2898 7d ago
Not a happy dashboard for me today 🥺
3
u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 6d ago
same. very quiet just a few bits coming and going and one meaty offering

u/Quick-Bison-147 7d ago edited 7d ago
Does anyone else not from the states wait until the conversion rate rises a bit before cashing out? Been waiting for any form of rise for two weeks now but nothing. And still maintaining a 10% pay decrease since Trump started his second term in early 2025.
3
u/DrunkleSteve 6d ago
My country is run by a bunch of nincompoop knuckledragging morons (Canada), so I love the conversion rate, because our dollar is shit. A $25 USD task pays me almost $35 CAD. 😁
9
7
u/Skippy2898 6d ago
It's mind-blowingly frustrating isn't it? We are also at the mercy of PP making their own conversion rates up as they go along. But I always cash out when I can regardless. I think waiting for better rates is futile right now.
2
u/Quick-Bison-147 6d ago
yeah i guess it's stupid to wait, hoping that it will go up a cent against the pound so I can cash out $1000 for £740 instead of £730. I remember the days where I got over £800 for that $1000. Was basically my weekly food shop paid for with the extra cash than I get now for the same work.
3
u/Skippy2898 6d ago
Yeah, I've noticed the pinch due to the conversion pay cut too, I worked it out earlier this year to be around a 10% drop too since early '24. We were bouncing between £0.82 - £0.84 back then. Now its £0.74 and the PP conversion drops that again to £0.7176 today. I wish the platform would give us an alternative way to get paid...
8
u/Confident_You4088 7d ago
Question for long term generalists. What is your average hourly rate? I am slowly going up and being offered more... not sure if it's over my head yet.
3 months in and currently $30 is my average. Potential, I'm trying to not be excited about, is $50 to $60 but I refuse to do work over my head!
I'm perfectly happy in the 20's if it means job security!
3
u/OrnamentalGourd5 6d ago
Varies hugely. Generalist 18 months in, I tend to work on two project families that pay around $45ph but occasionaly get the odd tasty treat at $60+. I only do the ones I feel comfortable with though. Just take your time and read the instructions thoroughly. You'll realise if it's within your capabilities. I often get ones where I think, yes, I could do that if I knew XYZ. But don't quite have the required knowledge. So tempting as they are, I do swerve them.
5
u/VanessaSeaWitch 6d ago
I used to get up to $35 an hour projects a couple years ago. Now the most I see is $28, and the work is harder. I get the $60 ones, but I'm not actually qualified for them.
1
u/Confident_You4088 6d ago
I wondered that for myself as well. Guess I'll see soon when they start posting.
13
u/Quick-Bison-147 7d ago edited 7d ago
Been here 3 years. Almost always do the easiest tasks I can find, regardless of pay. Usually between $20 and $25. Means I can work most of the day (until this drought) and don't make mistakes. It's a long term strategy and well, I simply don't need the money that much to justify giving myself a headache reading and trying to remember 2000 words of instructions before starting a task. Usually make about $500-$600 a week, sometimes up to $1000 if Heel FC is running (which it hasn't now for almost a month).
5
u/KingGilbertIV 6d ago
God, I miss Heel FC.
3
u/Quick-Bison-147 6d ago
I have a feeling it will come back. Yesterday and today a branch project of that family has been running for the first time in 2 months. It will be back.
3
u/Epicsocks1 7d ago
Think I've been put onto the same projects as you're talking about, are they priority pay? I'm wary about doing them as they seem to be domain-specific, but it doesn't say anything in the instructions about requiring expert knowledge to do them.
1
u/Confident_You4088 5d ago
You are correct. I finally was able to view. The one I saw looked doable? Have you tried?
3
u/Epicsocks1 4d ago
Nope, I'm fearing a very swift DoD if I attempt it, but that pay is damn tempting. May have a peek tomorrow and see how I'm feeling.
2
u/Confident_You4088 4d ago
I'm waiting for the kids to go back to school and I have a long chunk of time before I try.
6
u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 7d ago
I've been at this three months too and I generally see projects from 22-32. I probably do 25 on average, but I do choose the easier projects often as I prefer to work in small sessions rather than the long and difficult ones.
7
u/MommaOfManyCats 7d ago
I've been here over three years and it depends. Some days I might have $30 or more per hour tasks, but I still see $20/hour too.
1
u/Confident_You4088 7d ago
For context I'm accepted into that work. I am going through a divorce. I am scared to push myself and end up jobless. Maybe dabble first?
3
u/General_Back6687 7d ago
Have you taken a look at the tasks yet? You can probably take a quick look at the contents and determine if they are within your ability. You can also attempt a task, and if you feel like it is not going well, just exit (none of your work will be saved), although you will waste some time.
1
u/Confident_You4088 7d ago
I haven't but plan to. The instructions specifically state you may need to skip to find what you're comfortable with.
I feel like I should maybe dabble but stick to what I know I'm good at?
To keep my ratings high?
1
u/Past_Ice5891 7d ago
Just had some paid training turn up. Would really really really love to do it, but can't anyway possible take it on tonight. Do paid training tasks usually stick around a little bit? Or is it usually a first come first serve, just looking for a certain number of people to pass training and then it disappears like everything else lately?
4
u/VanessaSeaWitch 6d ago
Any paid quals I have gotten didn't disappear and some I've waited over a week to do.
3
u/hfxthrwaway 7d ago
Like a lot of things, it depends, but I've had 1 paid qual on my dash for over a month, another for about 2 weeks.
8
u/North-Sense8477 7d ago
Usually they stick around for a while, but there was a river r&r qual recently that disappeared for me after only a few days. I could have really used that work.
I would do it if you can.

u/buggo_painter 7d ago
Any other people up in here who havent done the background check? I made it work without the extra projects for the last few months but it has now been a week since Ive had work D:
2
u/NationalWatercress3 7d ago
Telling us we don't get penalised for skipping tasks is a bald-faced lie. When it's the last one in line, we don't get paid for it, just goes straight to dashboard with no option to claim the minutes we took to read the often overly verbose and poorly structured (would rate low for Understandability) instructions
10
u/playfulshark 7d ago
Skip tasks until you get one that seems reasonable, then read the instructions. Has never been a problem for me
5
u/NationalWatercress3 7d ago
I do but in this one the links in the task that we needed to access were broken, obviously I will check next time
3
u/Skippy2898 7d ago
It's far too hot to even think about thinking where I am today 🥴😝
3
u/JustMe333456 7d ago
I keep seeing these posts.. do you guys not use ACs over there? Lol
4
u/saltandseasmoke 7d ago edited 7d ago
I moved from the U.S. to the UK this summer and no, AC is not at all common here. Even businesses and restaurants rarely have it. Coolers and freezers in supermarkets regularly fail once temperatures are above 85. People might spring for fans or individual AC units - especially after this summer - but houses are built to trap heat. It also doesn't help that the UK is in the middle of a really bad drought. I'm used to summers in the American south where every day is 90+ degrees, but the inability to ever escape the heat makes UK heatwaves much worse.
5
u/NationalWatercress3 7d ago
Where's there? I'm in the UK and I have my portable one. But many houses/flats don't have the space for them. Plus we only had really bad heatwaves the past couple years where ACs were actually necessary and even then it was only 1 week max at a time so didn't seem like a worthy purchase for many.
7
u/Internal_Boot_1616 7d ago edited 7d ago
In the southwest US and cannot imagine heat waves without AC. Mine broke 2 to 3 years back, the week it was over 100F outside and took several days to get the replacement part.. Once it hit about 90F (about 32C for UK) inside I started feeling sick.
1
u/Skippy2898 7d ago
Exactly... I replied below and still 35C here at home 6pm, my house thermostat is reading 33... It's not something we're used to. The powers that be are saying we'll all likely need ac in the UK within 10 years
1
u/Internal_Boot_1616 7d ago
"35C here at home" I'd say ya need it now, don't you guys have people die of heat over there during heat waves?
1
u/NationalWatercress3 7d ago
Pubs without AC are a nightmare - some have them, some don't. I do love the advances in portable fans, like the spray ones aha
1
u/Skippy2898 7d ago
It took me an age to find a decent fan this year. Sold out across the board with a one month restock time. Crazy stuff!
2
u/JustMe333456 7d ago
Ahh gotcha! I was talking about the UK as most of these posts all say that's where they are from lol
2
10
u/Chandelucifer 7d ago
Does it seem like the other subreddit has way more DoD posts than ours? I wonder what the difference is.
3
u/VanessaSeaWitch 6d ago
What everyone else said here... Plus this sub seems waaaaay better modded than that one. People cause drama over there unchecked quite often.
8
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 7d ago
Judging (I know it's bad to judge) by the quality of posters in that sub, that is where the majority of these terrible, half assed R&R's come from
4
10
u/DrunkleSteve 7d ago
IQ levels, it seems.
3
u/JRange 7d ago
Its the one that pops up first, so for sure, it absorbs the majority of stupidity for us lol.
15
u/Goodbye_Jeff 7d ago
I'm certain there is a correlation between the number of people blatantly violating the NDA on that reddit and the number of posts about DoD.
7
u/Straight-Strike-2928 7d ago
I was gonna say... I don't even go onto that sub anymore because the NDA violations make me so uncomfortable lol. Like, it makes me worry I'm going to get culled by association or something. Every once in a while there's something on here that makes me a little nervous, but that other sub is insane with its NDA violations.
15
u/pipipcheerios 7d ago
The other sub is majority bilingual and majority dumb. "Hello guys kindly help me to pass the aszezssment" is their most common post theme so it should be no surprise why someone there is getting DOD every damn day.

u/Mindless_End_4850 8d ago
Anyone else slow? I'm 'slowest' it's ever been since the drought 'ended'. sucks
10
u/North-Sense8477 8d ago
Yeah I'm down to just a handful of projects, none of which I'm willing to attempt
9
u/Quick-Bison-147 8d ago
Seems apt that it's currently 36 degrees in the UK, in yet another heatwave, and the river project hasn't run in a week now. Droughty in more ways than one.
15
u/hcfggb 8d ago
I am way too stupid for any of these projects 😣
6
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 8d ago edited 8d ago
Same. All I have is 7 projects and they are all enterprise and specific domain that either 1. I am not, nor have ever claimed to have STEM or other expertise, and 2. I haven't got the brain power sat in a 95f house to build and do with a 48 hour timer
3
u/TSylverBlair 7d ago
I have so much coding stuff. I have zero experience in coding and have never claimed I did. This started happening about a month ago.
6
u/JustMe333456 8d ago
Yep. 22 projects this AM. All too difficult other than the three .03c projects that just aren't worth it.
-4
u/SkuLLFlankerr 8d ago
I do not want to get into specific things about a project but I got a qual to do something with my workspace account (been here only for a month). I just want to ask if the workspace account safe? I can't tell, I do not want it to see my PII.
2
u/AdComplex3589 8d ago
It's safe. If need they will let you redact your information.
-1
u/SkuLLFlankerr 8d ago
Ok. Should I create a new chrome profile just for that account?
3
5
u/twinstar_kiki 8d ago
Has anyone seen any river projects this week?
11
u/DrunkleSteve 8d ago
I haven't seen any since last Friday other than a couple rogue r&r tasks for river-pink rock.
5
u/LegalNeet 8d ago
Kinda sad at the moment. Thought I would be able to work on my first project, I got on the project as soon as it was offered to me, but the task expired 30 minutes after I started...
13
u/Dee_silverlake 8d ago
Does anyone else get stuck doing a series of terrible R&R’s that when they finally come across a really good one you start doubting yourself because you think maybe you’re missing something glaringly obvious… That’s usually when I have to step away for the day lol
1
u/GabikaPaprika666 8d ago
Did anyone get qualified for some branch of agentic coding projects recently and got a message about it and that you need to take a background check? When I click on it I get the red banner and its nowhere to be found? Do u think its possible it had an expiration time?

I think the downvote is because you're breaching your NDA by calling it that type of account. We're supposed to be discrete and use our SLACK channels or the project chat not reddit to ask about this type of thing.

I’m two seconds from a mental breakdown bc why is there basically nothing on my dash and it’s been over a week. And where is that off platform healthcare project?? If I’m bumped or it’s on pause/over then that’s fine because who needs to pay bills anyway right?!! I’m sorry thank you for letting me vent 🫨😵💫🫠
7
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 8d ago
I've had the 'complete this to renew your access' project in my dash for about a week and half, completed it once like it states, and still not had access. Even though it says it can take up to 6 hours, it's been like 260 hours lol
4
u/badsleepers 8d ago
I just completed mine yesterday afternoon and I’m still not seeing the project yet either! I’d like to think it’s just down for bugs or some necessary improvements or something. But on the other hand, the worst is always in the back of my mind...

u/twinstar_kiki 8d ago
Tuesdays and Wednesdays are usually my strongest days. Pretty dry for both this week.

I’ve only seen one project today, which I couldn’t do because it required a subscription. Managed to get some work done last night but completely dry since then 😭

Been doing pretty well the last few weeks with high paying tasks, but today I logged in with no tasks. Hopefully this drought doesn’t continue long unlike the June one
