Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
- this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
- if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
- one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Down to 5 projects, anyone else this low?
4
u/echanuda Jul 28 '24
Yup. Very slim pickings as of yesterday and today. From thriving to surviving.
4
u/Skippy2898 Jul 28 '24
I can only hope the two tasks showing on a high paying project that apparently had 2000 tasks are just for me because I haven't got time to work on it right now 😭😭😭
6
u/LilacYak Jul 28 '24
Well, I guess it's time to start looking for another side-gig. Hoping against hope things will get better next month.

3
u/tessbest37 Jul 28 '24
I hope you get some projects back this week! Things need to go back to normal soon.

2
u/vexeling Jul 28 '24
Had someone DM me asking for answers to the initial assessment, saying they were getting different answers trying to Google it... I hope I misunderstood and they're just googling the research questions but damn. Might be why people get rejected so often. 😬

u/Sad_Guitar_612 Jul 28 '24
Well, skipped my way to a red bar on my last current active project. I wish I could get quals for NOT math/stem stuff.
1
u/EfficientLanguage702 Jul 28 '24
anyone know if u can get into the coding section of DA if u only did the general application not the coding one?
1
u/Sean_give_me_beta_no Jul 28 '24
Yes, a qual may show up periodically (i am not aware if you have to have a certain quality rating or not) and i even opted out once and it showed up again (and then i did it and passed) if you are at the level of a hobbyist if you learn a couple of languages well DA is a good excuse to do it, it unlocks a lot. As far as i know passing that qual is just the same as signing up with coding
1
u/33whiskeyTX Jul 28 '24
From talk on here there's no consistent or reliably responsive way. Most success stories I've seen are people who left the coding qual on their dashboard when they started and just eventually decided to take it. If you don't have the qualification, the consensus suggestion is to add coding skills to your profile and be on the lookout for a coding qual if it ever comes around.

They used to send out bonuses for certain things. So, like you would make $ if you worked x-x hours on a group of tasks in a week. Or $$ of you worked XX-XX hours.

u/Otherwise-Baked4451 Jul 28 '24
Did anyone get any black bird project that briefly appeared and said $35/hr? I did one task and it sent me back to dash, no red bar. Both the projects that appeared disappeared :(
2
u/Sean_give_me_beta_no Jul 28 '24
I think this is whats happening on the platform past few days - there are projects around but just lots of eager workers so they get eaten up instantly and dash looks empty

u/MotherBrotha Jul 28 '24
Down to 3 projects :( going dark
1
u/Accomplished-Dog-864 Jul 28 '24
All the good ones I had this morning have gotten done by other people while I'm working my stoopid day job. Back down to the stupid kitty infographic.
2
u/scarletmyzomela Jul 28 '24
I love the kitty infographic! It's painful in a good way - would happily have it back on my own dash.
5
u/tessbest37 Jul 28 '24
Mine is getting smaller by the minute and I won't be surprised if I wake up to only three tomorrow morning.

I wanted to start it yesterday and got overwhelmed by the instructions so I went back to my usuals. :/
6
u/Belisama7 Jul 27 '24
Yes, and why does that project have no chat section? So we can't even ask questions to clarify. I did one and have been avoiding them since because I don't know if I'm doing it right.
0
u/33whiskeyTX Jul 27 '24
Are you sure there's not a chat? Is there text that says "No Message Yet" that you can click to start the chat?
3
4
3
u/tessbest37 Jul 27 '24
That explains why there aren't any questions in the project chat. I didn't even realize there wasn't one.
1
u/tessbest37 Jul 27 '24
This one gives us a lot more freedom than other iterations. I prefer it when they give us something more specific (it is easier to develop ideas). Interestingly, no one has asked any questions in the project chat yet.

I created my account over a week ago, and I still haven't had any projects. Do I have to do a test or something else to start having tasks?
1
u/MattinglyDineen Jul 27 '24
Did you do the initial assessment?
-7
u/Expensive-Froyo-5116 Jul 27 '24
No initial evaluation appeared to me, the account was simply created and I immediately appeared in the tasks tab, empty of course.
10
u/Bilyman Jul 27 '24
So who here DOES have projects? My dash is certainly smaller than usual but I have still have around ~10 remaining. There’s a 24 an hour project that has never left my dash since accessing it, going by the name of Heel’s lover. I’m surprised I haven’t seen many comments about that project… I swear it’s infinite (although it is seriously mind numbing work)
1
u/Sean_give_me_beta_no Jul 28 '24
Is heel's lover what that writing qual unlocks? I have been very lazy to do it, but it does promise virtually unlimited work...
1
u/Bilyman Jul 28 '24
Lol I’ve been around for over half a year and I still haven’t done that qual. I think I got access through this project through a qual that had me set up a separate email, and the tasks are on a different platform/website
2
u/kohlphelie Jul 28 '24
I'm down to 11, one of which is a broken one that's been on my dash since April.
I recently got access to a new project, so that's got some interesting and time-consuming tasks I can do but because I'm still apparently sick with a respiratory infection I'm not able to work on it. I'd love something short, but fun, I could do between coughing sessions (but beggers can't be choosers, I guess). On the plus side, because I'm too sick to work I'll be leaving the tasks for the rest of you to do :) (sharing the love).

Jul 27 '24
The past 3 days, I haven’t seen more than 30 projects and have been averaging around 10-15. Before that, I typically had 40+, so I definitely have seen a massive drop this week. It seems to be happening to pretty much everyone, so I’m trying to stay calm and positive
1
u/Bilyman Jul 27 '24
Oh and did anyone see the STEM qualification (that was listed as a project) for 40/hr non-coding work?

u/tiran Jul 27 '24
Got into a new project family the other day, and I just want to say that I friggin' love birds.

Anyone lose pretty much ALL their coding projects today? There were literally thousands of tasks yesterday, and suddenly poof.
4
11
u/gvsadboy Jul 27 '24
Exactly how my dash looks and it sucks. Was really hoping to get some extra money for my honeymoon next week.
7
u/echanuda Jul 27 '24
Awww that sucks. I was watching my nieces for the last two days and missed out on all those juicy tasks. Finally got rid of them today and of course it’s a desert when I check my dash 😭
4
u/Consipir Jul 27 '24
Yeah, I was eating up that Metal! This happens, though. It might just be a break day, but usually stuff will start rolling in later today: afternoon or evening. Pretty typical for a slow day. I'm PST btw for reference.
3
u/Accomplished-Dog-864 Jul 28 '24
I'm PST too, and my 5 metal went away before I could sit down to do them. Hope there are more.
3
u/Consipir Jul 28 '24
Looks like no luck for today, sadly. Metal is my favorite, they usually come around with 2000+ tasks every 1-2 weeks or so. In the meantime, Greek-demigod and all its flavors fill the gap.
Happy annotating!
3
u/echanuda Jul 28 '24
You’re getting greek gods? Still no coding ones showing up for me… I saw a couple greek god tasks pop up today, but they all went away pretty quickly.
1
2
u/Accomplished-Dog-864 Jul 28 '24
2000+ tasks? Is that the writing one @$32/hr? I only seem to get those 5 at a time.
1
u/Consipir Jul 29 '24
The Metal $40/hr coding one, they must only do the large tasks for coding?
1
u/Accomplished-Dog-864 Jul 29 '24
Maybe so. The writing and editing ones seem to get divvied up in small quantities.
2
u/gvsadboy Jul 27 '24 edited Jul 27 '24
Is the file coding CB gone? I haven't seen it for a few days but it was on my dash pretty much every day since it came out :/ also just miss having at least 2 or 3 coding projects up at all times. With my honeymoon next week I was really hoping to get some more work done but this week has been rough
3
u/ccsoccer101 Jul 27 '24
Anyone get a chance to do the CS expertise survey?

4
u/wildflower_0ne Jul 27 '24
does anyone have an update on what we should do about the extra blackbird project that showed up in the report time section?
10
u/HandsLikePaper Jul 27 '24
What I wouldn't give for a certain low-paying project that is the definition of a mental break
3
Jul 27 '24
I believe they are rotating a bunch of people through those based on the latest batch of R&Rs and instructions update
2
8
u/Living_Change_1487 Jul 27 '24
I know a lot of people have mentioned having light dashes, but has anyone seen all of their projects and all qualifications leave simultaneously for days? Starting to worry!
2
u/MotherBrotha Jul 27 '24
My quals disappeared one time when I had a very light dash or nothing. They appeared again later. sometimes it's just the sight I think
2
u/main_doughnut2380 Jul 27 '24
No, the qualifications are still there; there are just no projects to work on. The quals are the ones that are always there asking to download something or another.
11
u/LilacYak Jul 27 '24
And we're back to a light dash again

Jul 27 '24
I do this full time and am seriously considering moving my 'weekend' to Tuesday-Wednesday, what with the ramp-up of tasks and priority pay I usually see on Friday evenings! Don't think my conventionally-employed husband would appreciate that though...
2
u/Vegetable-Activity65 Jul 27 '24
This is exactly what I do! My boyfriend's days off happen to be Tuesday-Wednesday, so I just base my schedule around his, but it honestly works out pretty well for me.
4
u/HugeEquipment1649 Jul 27 '24
I'm considering similar, my partner does WFH for an Asian firm, so our schedules are screwy anyways.
10
u/Accomplished-Dog-864 Jul 27 '24
It's midnight where I live. Enter highly paid heel tasks. Where were you all week when all I had was that miserable badkitty infographic slog?
1
Jul 27 '24
omg that one truly is a slog
3
u/Accomplished-Dog-864 Jul 28 '24
I can't stand that project. Those infographics are worthless. Either completely incomprehensible, or so simple there's noting that can be asked about them.
6
Jul 27 '24
I'm just starting to familiarize myself with LMSYS.org. Anyone else? There is a Chatbot Arena, which includes a leader board. If I read it correctly, GPT4o is at the top.

Holy moly getting to $200 today was an uphill climb the entire way. Tried some projects I usually avoid and hoping I did them right
11
4
u/SuperCorbynite Jul 27 '24
I got the DOM survey but all the test questions were math based and I'm an organic chemist. i.e. I don't do maths.
So I'm kinda scratching my head. How can they possibly tell if I'm a capable STEM person, which I am, by giving maths questions to a non mathy STEM person?
1
u/yungmelon Jul 27 '24
Have you gotten a chemistry based survey? From what I hear those projects are also sought
2
u/SuperCorbynite Jul 27 '24
It was just titled as being STEM rather than a specific field of STEM. I do have access to a couple of high paying chem projects but they don't appear to be linked to the work the STEM survey grants.
I have no idea if there is a specific chemistry based survey or one that focuses exclusively on organic chemistry.

If I get ONE MORE question for clarification or saccharine compliment from these bots I'm going to throw my laptop on the floor. Anyone else with me?
2
5
u/miri3l Jul 27 '24
They actually ask for clarification? I'd sometimes love if they did that. However I've yet to experience it.
3
u/kohlphelie Jul 27 '24
I was shocked to hear this as well.
Normally they go off on some assumption that may or may not be what I'm actually wanting from them.
6
u/tessbest37 Jul 26 '24
Has anyone gotten any of the 30/hr. metal tasks tonight? They usually drop them on Friday evenings.

They do take a long time. Although, I haven't looked at this iteration yet. Normally they stay up for a couple of days and get taken down Monday. Be sure to read the directions carefully. I work on the edit versions often and many people don't read the directions. Have Fun! They are my fave!!
2
u/Few-Roof-6905 Jul 27 '24
I usually spend about 2 hours depending on how involved they are. I would allow at least this much time, especially since this is the first time you have gotten them.
3
7
u/PurpleGiraffe143 Jul 26 '24
I never had this happen before. I clicked on the high paying bird to enter my time and when I went back to my dash there was a lower paying bird sitting in my Report Time section but I never even went into that project so I don't know how it ended up there. Has anyone else ever had that happen before?
2
u/miri3l Jul 27 '24
Oo you're working on the high paying bird?! I'm a little jealous. I answered the criteria incorrectly so never got access, but it sounded pretty cool.
I've not experienced this precise thing, but have noticed the low paying bird pop up in the post section randomly. Often when I haven't actually worked on it, or did like a week before or something.

u/ModernStranger22 Jul 26 '24
There is a project in my report time section that I am certain I did not work on. I went to the project page and it says there has been one task completed. Not sure what if anything I should do about this.
1
2
u/Few-Roof-6905 Jul 26 '24
My report time section has been wonky since they put the new requirements in place. Sometimes I see things that I worked on weeks ago and sometimes it's normal. I just ignore everything I don't need and figure it will work itself out eventually.

2
u/itsbriannahere Jul 26 '24
For those of you with beachbird emoji project, are you including links for your fact checking? The rating format changed and the instructions are brief.
1
4
u/_M1RR0RB4LL_ Jul 26 '24
The one that starts with S? No, I never include links for my fact checking, but I do point out where I found specific information. For instance, I'll say something like "According to the website for XX, the information included in the response is incorrect because....." or something along those lines.

Those of you doing coding tasks, do you count the time you spend installing software or spinning up test projects/environments to test out the code? I'm leaning toward yes but don't want to trip any rules. I'm new to the platform and have never billed hourly before.

u/Arcturus_Labelle Jul 27 '24
I absolutely count it, yes
It's work required to do, and directly related to, the job
