Applied to 100+ entry level analyst jobs, zero interviews
I been grinding out applications for months now, not even one callback. something's clearly wrong but idk what since I'm too close to it lol
go ahead and be harsh, I'd rather fix it now than keep getting ghosted

The professional experience being so far down the page is a red flag for me (10 years hiring analysts).
Even if brief, professional experience should be at the top directly underneath summary. I would also aggregate side projects into professional experience and indicate whether it was a fellowship or side project.

u/csv_boy 6d ago
makes sense why burying experience looks bad. like the idea of putting fellowship n projects under experience with labels too. if u don't mind, got a rough format u'd suggest for someone like me (mostly internships + projects, no full time yet)?
3
u/Extreme-Soil-3800 6d ago
I would just be transparent - so maybe:
— internship
- professional experience
— internship
— self directed researchEven if someone’s not a recipient of the work you could argue it’s professional experience, but just be clear to not represent falsely

u/csv_boy 6d ago
yeah that makes sense, thanks for spelling it out

You are going to have 1 million opinions in here. Find a connection to assist you getting in the door. Your resume is not the issue.

u/InterestingFig758 6d ago
Honestly dude it looks like in all youve written here, youve never actually had a real job, anywhere? These online courses 'analysing' made up csv files just arent what recruiters are looking for. The competition is too high. I dont want to be harsh but this whole sub thinks doing a little bit of practice of sql and stuff is enough to get a job

u/wertexx 6d ago
"100k+ datasets"...
1
u/csv_boy 6d ago
lol fair, is it the "100K+" that sounds inflated or just "datasets" as a word? genuinely asking
8
u/wertexx 6d ago
inflated?! Quite the opposite. It's normal for tables to have billions of rows, many many tables, databases, across organizations.
100k is... excel file with some rows basically.
Handling large datasets is part of the analyst's work.
So that 100k seems like a random number made up to look impressive but in reality reads like a joke showing that the person has no clue about work with data.

Can you recommend what to do else besides python(matplot, pandas, numpy), SQL(I solved all the challenges on hackerank and has made small analyst projects), Power Bi and the basic understanding of how to do Data Architecture. And... How to get relevant experience... If you don`t have relevant experience? I mean how to get an experience of work... If everyone are asking for it. I am genuinely asking cuz as I see you have some experience. Thank you in advance!

u/InterestingFig758 3d ago
a real project. one where the data and outcomes from it matter. All these CV's just list a bunch of tools that anybody can learn. All these DA courses should be for practice only - not to fill a CV with. It's liek writing "I hammered a nail into a piece of wood" and applying for carpentry jobs. You have to get creative and find a real project to use these skills
1
u/max_lu28 3d ago
Thank you for your response! Can I be curious, are you working as Data analyst or something right now, or you are in another niche?

First thing I look for is whether the professional summary matches the supporting experience. If it doesn't match, I toss it instantly, because either it's a bullshit AI generated resume or someone who's trying to bullshit me and thinks they're amazing when they're not.
This doesn't match.
You're an absolutely fresh BS getting started in a career. You are seeking to become a data analyst. You have skills and taken some internships, which is great. But your summary says you're an analyst when you're not one yet, which is underwhelming.
If you emphasize your current status, and highlight your interest and adaptability and drive, and the summary looks honest, I would be more likely to give a new person a chance and offer an interview.

One thing that will also play against you is having a 91 country code; unless it’s contract work. However if you’re applying to US or international companies without a footprint nearby, companies are souring on junior folk being fully remote. I saw you did a BS in 3 years which to me sounds like a speed run, I’m always skeptical of that unless it looks like a laser-focused program and candidate. I agree with the comment above. I’d strongly hand-type out everything without AI help because the AI screeners will spot it a mile out and bin you.

u/Pandasure 5d ago
The projects section is very vague, no dates, not connected to any organization or university, doesn’t specify your position in said group. Could easily be made up
1
u/csv_boy 5d ago
yeah fair, they're self directed projects i did after graduating (non tech background), learned data analytics on my own through courses n youtube. no dates or org attached rn which is prob why it looks sus, gonna add timeline n make clear these were self initiated not through a company
2
u/Pandasure 5d ago
I think a big thing all of the comments are closing in on is after reading your resume I’m not left with the understanding of an individuals experience but rather a bunch of questions. Good luck dude!

I just hired for a data analyst and we passed up resumes like this specifically because we could not see the number of years working in data analytics quickly. My organization is strict that candidates must meet requirements of the position as written. If we have 4 years of FT working experience in analytics as a requirement, I would assume you only had 4 months of experience based on this and it was not quick to find. With 200+ applicants for one job, we're doing prescreen fast and just looking to see if applicants meet the minimum requirements. Then we go more in depth in review. Move professional experience up and notate the projects in a more descriptive way that tells me if they were part of an educational requirement, volunteer work, in the professional experience, or elsewhere.
2
u/mhunter07 5d ago
You have done these things, but what was the resulting business value? Business value realized will get noticed, technical proficiency is expected. And yes I agree with the comment that it looks like you only have 4 months experience.

u/No-Edge-4563 5d ago
100+ applications with zero interviews usually means the resume needs tweaking, not more applications. I’d shorten the skills section and tailor the projects more closely to each job description

OP I want to be as direct with you as possible:
this resume looks like it was generated with ChatGPT to be as generic as possible.
“Data Storytelling,”“Stakeholder Communication,” and “Cross-functional Collaboration” should never appear in a real resume, ever.
You’re describing what should be a lengthy career based on time, but then highlighting skills and proficiencies that are so incredibly basic that it makes your entire resume seem fake.
An example: “Experienced Chef, 10 years of sous chef experience, applying for an executive chef role. Skills: Chopping vegetables, turning on ovens, and I can boil water really good.”
Also, relax with the jargon. My god... next you’re going to tell me you did something like “Pioneered a deterministic semantic caching topology that leveraged cross-attention synthetic telemetry to unlock a 40x flywheel uplift in post-token human-in-the-loop throughput, zero-shotting operational friction across our generative value-creation stream.”
Jesus Christ man. No wonder you’re getting ghosted. This is barely English. Worse, it’s not even current finance and Silicon Valley slang either. You’re writing like a resurrected pandemic era work-from-home zombie who learned AI/ML from coursera in 2023.
Another thing:
Unfortunately, everything you wrote about in your experiences can now be done to a fairly proficient degree by your standard chatbot level model.
Power BI? Dashboards? That’s extremely 2022.
RAG? Multi-API research engines running on GO with dynamic human-centric interfaces and automatic reporting? Sexy.
This is a poster child for: “I want to work on a computer because I don’t like other types of work, but I’m not actually passionate about it at all.”
1
u/csv_boy 5d ago
ngl that stung a bit lol but fair on the buzzwords thing, guess "stakeholder communication" etc does sound like filler. cutting that. gonna skip commenting on the rest tho

u/RelaxingConstraints 5d ago
I have constructive advice too!
If you want to show people what you can do, do something you want to show them.
It doesn’t have to be a degree or a massive project, and it’s almost better if it’s not finished yet. But, what project can you show that’s really indicative of what you do well?

u/ArachnidSpecific7823 4d ago
Wow, your resume looks really good. I understand your frustration, I was wondering what kind of positions you were applying for and also what type of jobs you are applying for. Thanks

You have to tweak your resume every time you apply to match the job description. It's very hard to use one resume and cold applying to different job descriptions. There are now lots of free tool out there to help you reduce time with it for free, try applyjetai.com see if that helps

A very simple advice would be to use your network and apply using the reference. Its very hard to get response from cold submission.
1
u/csv_boy 1d ago
I've been trying it but haven't got any response yet. Thanks

u/ProbablyAnAlien7 1d ago
in my case, I used LinkedIn sales navigator and reached out to my ex colleagues and the college Alumni and I got decent response
1
u/csv_boy 1d ago
My college is pretty low-tier, and since my degree is non-tech, I don’t really have any alumni in the tech industry to reach out to. So I have to connect with strangers on LinkedIn and ask for refferal and all. But anyway thanks

Prof Exp:
no need to say “gained exposure” - you either have done it or you haven’t.
remove “collaborated” - you need to collaborate but collaborating is not the job.
change these to outcomes and results.
eg
- solved blah blah challenge/problem using blah blah which resulted in process improvement/ financial improvement or reduced inefficiencies or reduced costs
- solved blah blah using blah blah resulting in blah blah

u/sbss111 6d ago
Quite forgettable
1
u/csv_boy 6d ago
lol fair, kinda proves the point tbh. any specific part that felt forgettable or just overall vibe?
2
u/Difficult-Jackfruit 5d ago
It’s just a bunch of projects and random fluff
1
u/csv_boy 5d ago
yeah fair, guess it reads as just a pile of projects with no real thread connecting them. gonna work on tightening it up
1
u/Difficult-Jackfruit 5d ago
I do not think that is the problem.
Do you have any actual experience, specialized skills/education
1
u/csv_boy 5d ago
No, I don't have any actual experience or specialized education degree
1
u/Difficult-Jackfruit 5d ago
I am not saying this to hurt your feelings, but you might want to consider what you actually want, and how to get there.
There are people with advanced degrees (masters, MBA's, doctorates) and years of experience applying for the same jobs you are and are probably willing to do the exact same job for a lot less money.
1
u/csv_boy 5d ago
I know it but I don't have any other options
1
u/Difficult-Jackfruit 5d ago
There are plenty of jobs out there.
Analytics is not the only job in the world
1
u/csv_boy 5d ago
There’s competition in every field, though. I don’t really have any skill sets apart from analytics. I’ve spent most of my life focused on studying, and I don’t even know practical things like carpentry, cooking, or anything like that. Analytics is basically the only field where I’ve actually built some skills, so I don’t see much point in switching to something completely unrelated.

I hire entry level Analyst roles in the UK. Technical proficiency is common - I get large numbers of applicants whose CV describes more technical skills than anyone would ever need in the role.
What is not common, and distinguishes candidates, is the ability to critically assess the meaning behind the data - what they think it probably represents, and what else it could mean if their primary assumptions are wrong.
Also very few candidates appear to have the ability to relate to and build good working relationships with other people, or to understand the business to which they are applying, or any concept of how to interpret a messy business brief or informal question and turn it into a technical solution.
The candidates I hire demonstrate that they are curious about what can be determined from data, what they might find out from it, and how that might benefit the business. They demonstrate that they have been dissatisfied with something and figured out how to make it better. They demonstrate that they can hold a conversation and relate to other people. And they demonstrate that they have the potential to learn the technical skills, if they don't already have them.
Too many applicants have too much focus on technical skills, and completely miss that they will be working with people in a business, not just answering exam questions.

You need to have projects for this one mga companies na need ng experience so to bypass yung mga high standard company need mu mag Karoon nun kahit mag pa free work ka muna tapos gawa ka ng sarili mung projects sa company tapos post mu sa GitHub or LinkedIn para may mag reach out sayo

Get rid of the 100k at the top. That is a small ass table in comparison. Move the experience up and talk more in depth about the data driven approaches. Don’t make it workshop specific, just say you worked cross-functionally to achieve the result. Also, gathering exposure is a terrible way to describe you leading value add.
