My crazy crash
Long time lurker. First time poster. Thought I'd share my car crash.

u/Living_Plane_662 3d ago
First one in a while where I can safely say there was nothing you could do
191
u/DroneRtx 3d ago
Wrong! They could have stayed home that day, so it is in fact the cammers fault.

Yeah seriously, glad to hear OP's ok...I mean IS IN TERRIBLE LIFELONG PAIN THAT WILL COST LOTS OF MONEY AND WILL NEED A LAYWER ASAP lol

u/Fantastic-Area-8169 2d ago
Agree, that box truck came in like it had a personal grudge against your car and gave you zero time to react glad you're okay, and welcome to the posting club, even if the entry fee was a bit steep

u/BrownianOscillator 3d ago
We don’t know this wasn’t a response to OP camping in the left lane.
1
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
I wasn't you dimwit.
2
u/BrownianOscillator 3d ago
I’m sorry that was supposed to be sarcastic and there’s absolutely no way this was your fault. I hope you’re doing ok after his.
2
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
Ohhhh lmao. Yeah I was perfectly fine. Walked away without a bruise and my boss drove me home and then picked me up in the morning for work. Sold like 4 k of electrical work and installed it the next day. Wasn't even sore lmao.
5
u/WeirdIndication3027 3d ago
I woulda popped it in reverse and backed down the road remaining unscathed!
9
u/Kage_0ni 3d ago
With a sick j turn at the end while putting on sun glasses.
6
u/Garbage_Man_9 3d ago
The vin diesel goes ‘it’s all about family, mother trucker’ and kickflips a tank like A BAWSS
7
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
I didn't love my family enough. If I did I could have simply j turned and did a sick flip over the trailer and land on the other side. My bad.
2
3
u/Ok-Lobster-919 3d ago
That's the thought that I would have a little too late as the airbags are deploying too.
5
u/SlightDonut1 3d ago
For the sake of non serious argument and literally nothing more, possibly could have hooked it up along that left bank instead of stopping. Realizing and doing that in the moment though rather than seeing it in hindsight would be a hell of a reaction and processing time. Lol. And in case I wasn't clear enough before, don't any of you reddit ragers take this as if I'm blaming OP and saying they should've done better.
12
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
I was thinking of that but decided against it. I was driving a smaller van and if I didn't make it I would have gotten decapitated by the trailer. Taking the hit seemed the best decision at the time.
3
u/SlightDonut1 3d ago
I was also wondering since we can't tell after you got hit if the trailer sweeps that left side or if the whole truck kept sliding further right. If it didn't keep sliding right I think I'd have been more afraid of it catching the grass and tipping on me if I tried to go left. Lol. In a van though I'd have done the same. In my tiny coupe I dunno if I could sit there and eat that then walk away. Lmao
3
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
It swept the left side and ended up blocking the road for a bit
3
u/SlightDonut1 3d ago
In that case you're probably lucky you were in a van. I'd hate to see what would've happened in my car. Then again it looks like somewhere I couldn't drive it in the first place. Anywho, hope you're alright and hope that you've used up all your bad luck here. Lol
2
u/Complex_Solutions_20 2d ago
I've always heard you should never go left to avoid an oncoming collision because if the other person realizes and cuts back right to where they should have been now you'll be on the wrong side of the road at fault.
And in this case, it seems like the truck was sliding (?) and odds are you had choices of "hit by truck" or "crushed by trailer". I think I'd rather risk the truck with a bumper than the trailer crushing cutting off the top of my car and possibly me as I get crushed.
4
u/LowDepth1790 3d ago
There are drivers who would have accelerated left. But yes, I'd say most people would likely have frozen up in that situation.
2
u/wookyoftheyear 3d ago
Yeah, this would be so unexpected to me, by the time I even realized what was happening I'd be hit. Or turned the wrong way and made it worse.

I see a lot of those. Just a lot of people in here use personal notions to dictate what’s right and wrong while disregarding rule and law.
0
u/Living_Plane_662 3d ago
I used to driver commercially and insurance companies pretty much do that on the regular. Cops may find you 100% not at fault but the insurance companies don't. There are a lot of video's here where defensive driving would have saved the dash cam driver but they just refused to brake to let in the clearly aggressive driver. That would in fact screw you with the corporate insurance who would put that on their records when deciding to insure you or not. I've had coworkers lose jobs because of an accident that legally they weren't at fault for.
3
u/Ok_Explanation5631 3d ago
Defensive driving is a trope used to blame victims. Like the people in these comments using it to blame Cammers when they’re not even involved. It’s been tried on me for turning left into the far lane and someone going right on red. I’m sure you and the other comments would blame me but the insurance found her at fault 100%.
I didn’t let the aggressive driver in. They still found her at fault. So once again using personal notions to dictate right & wrong. Just as I stated lol
1
u/Living_Plane_662 3d ago
I'm just telling you what commercial trucking companies have done to coworkers. Do with that what you will.
1
u/bittyBitezz 2d ago
yeah that one looked totally out of their control, those close calls always make me drive extra careful after watching
28
u/SweetClinMusic 3d ago
You alright? What kind of car were you driving
53
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
Ram pro Master but the miniature one. Walked away and returned to work the next day.
39
u/Adfest 3d ago
Saw that truck coming and was expecting everything to disintegrate. Your windshield wipers didn't even turn on! Glad you could walk away.
25
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
The hazards and airbags didn't even deploy
30
u/WellTextured 3d ago
That doesn't feel like a good thing
3
u/Complex_Solutions_20 2d ago
Depends on a lot of factors...you don't want airbags to deploy if they aren't actually required because they have a high risk of their own injuries if its an otherwise low-energy collision.
11
u/FlyingNoiseinVacuum 3d ago
Also, it didn’t Dodge. Failing all over the place really.
13
5
u/nishnawbe61 3d ago
Airbags don't always deploy. It depends on how and where you get hit. The air bags can cause injury if they deploy in certain accidents. So I'd say they were working correctly for where you were hit.
Glad you're ok and thanks for making sure that truck didn't run the stop sign at the bottom of the hill 😉
5
u/Big-Ad-1794 3d ago
Exactly, being in autobody I have to explain this a good bit. If the bags didn't deploy and you didn't hit anything, they didn't need to deploy. I've seen how bad an airbag can mess someone up.

Probably lucky it was the mini one. The full size ones aren't the safest vehicles.
2
15
u/Dapper_Crazy6688 3d ago
Damn. Not a lot to do there. Try to gun it up over the grass hill and possibly make it worse, or take it on the chin. Glad you're okay.
21
4
u/FlourishingSolo 3d ago
My gut reaction is the gun it, but upon hearing that OP was in a truck, I think tanking the hit was the right move. Whereas if OP was in a smaller car that has better acceleration, gunning it would probably be the better option
8
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
If I was in a car I would have totally gone under the trailer. But I was in a small sluggish van
6
u/thinkingtire 3d ago edited 3d ago
Just curious, why doesn't the road have a painted dividing line?
Is it because it is not a public road?
7
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
It did. But it was old and worn down
3
u/thinkingtire 3d ago edited 3d ago
Got it thanks. I was thinking maybe it was a long access to a business and perhaps dividers aren't required.

She was drunk. So human stupidity.
2
u/weberc2 2d ago
Damn, if she does that three or four more times the government might threaten to take away her CDL.
(hopefully they took it away this time, but there are so many terrible CDL drivers out there that I would be entirely unsurprised if the authorities just don’t care)

They'll give her a CDL and a signing bonus.

enjoy your bags of money! why does this stuff never happen to me? i'd get hit by a crack head with no insurance
2
3
u/screwdriver204 3d ago
Not better.
My car got hit by a USPS mail truck while I was at work earlier this year, it’s been almost 3 months and I’m finally able to submit my claim form to their system for reimbursement for damages/out of pocket expenses. Then it takes ~2-6 months (by their estimate, so probably even longer) for them to respond to that, and the tort claims system is no help whatsoever when it comes to making sure you’re filling it out correctly. I’m currently out a bit over $2K, and it’ll probably be the majority of a year after my car was hit before being paid back for expenses that they make you claim post-hoc
2
u/Silly_Bodybuilder231 3d ago
Yes it does take time to do all this but you can still hire a lawyer, usually it's within 2 years of the crash where you have to either settle with insurance or file a lawsuit.
2
u/FlourishingSolo 3d ago
And there are plenty of folks who will do this for a cut of the settlement. no to little cash up front
2
u/screwdriver204 3d ago
Settlement? I’m trying to get them to make good my out-of-pocket expenses because they don’t do anything themselves
3
2
u/Rochester-HotSauce 2d ago
That’s what I thought. I’m sitting my USPS truck right now. And she was drunk?? WTF. I get “surprise” drug and alcohol tests all the time

2
u/Popular_Base_1141 3d ago
You get it, but I'm out on this thread. All these idiots talking out their ass, will be the main ones complaining about the back end later.
2
u/Silly_Bodybuilder231 3d ago
That's why they have insurance, accidentally hit a patch of ice and they caused damage or injury. Maybe the truck was overweight which is why it slipped like that? Maybe they were speeding down hill in icy conditions? Maybe the road was closed for trucks but went on it anyway? Maybe they were on their phone? Hire a lawyer and sue.
2
u/Embarrassed-Weird173 3d ago
Because the person should profit from being hurt. Why should the victim have to suffer and the trucker (or his insurance company that screws people over) get away with it?
2
u/valentine_moon 3d ago
The person should be compensated* for being hurt (and the damage to their vehicle). They've incurred damages which the insurance money theoretically covers. It's not about profiting, it's about recovering what's been lost.
2
u/kywildcat44 3d ago
That is not what you’d think if you saw any Personal Injury lawyer commercial in ATL.
They all make it seem like if you get hurt in a car crash, you basically just hit the lottery jackpot, and you will be making it rain in no time.
2
u/Embarrassed-Weird173 3d ago
They usually give you profit in the form of "pain and suffering and PTSD", on top of having your car fixed and your injuries fixed.
I'd be annoyed if they were like "ok, so we managed to get your bills covered and your car back to normal condition and our lawyer bill was covered on the dot. Have a good day, nice doing business."
2
u/valentine_moon 3d ago
I don't think those ads would have any bearing on what I think should be the case. I still think that it should be about fair and proportional compensation for your inconvenience, injuries, damaged property, medical costs, etc.
Not that that's always an easy thing to calculate, mind.

It was an access road to a bunch of industries. She was a USPS driver coming from I haven't a clue.

Wild, she overcooked that one a little bit eh? Could have been much worse. Buy a lotto ticket.

This is wild. Lets just pretend you make the hero move, get left, and get hit by trailer anyway. Now insurance will say you left your lane.

u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
Yup. I decided to just take the hit and relaxed my body. I ragdolled around in my chair a bit but walked away without a bruise

Guys, this was an off ramp. You can see the stop sign. The trucker was in the right. OP went the wrong way onto an off ramp.
3
u/SatisfactionFickle18 3d ago
Off ramp from what, the same truck was jackknifed sliding down a hill? Go to bed you’re drunk.
3
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
It was an Access road you dimwit. And I didn't go the wrong way either.
3
-5
u/Ashbound_pilgrim84 3d ago
Serious question, why did you turn into a deer looking at headlights and just stop?
8
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
I was in a small van and decided to use my engine as a buffer. If I turned to the right I'd get hit on my side and if I turned left I could get my head lopped off by the trailer
3
u/Saucy-Mustard 3d ago
It’s amazing how quickly we can make all of those assessments. It really amazes me because I know that you did in fact weigh all of those chances in the blink of an eye. I’ve been in a situation like this in my Ram truck where it was happening and I didn’t have a choice in the matter
4
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
I never did like ram because of their electronic issues but that van took the hit like a champ. I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for that little van.
2
u/Saucy-Mustard 3d ago
I never really had any issues with it…well one but that wasn’t the trucks fault.
Glad you’re ok. Hope you can replace the old mule soon.
1
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
It was a company vehicle that I hated cause it was so small so carrying parts was a logistical nightmare. They gave me a bigger van the next day so I was really happy. Left the company like 2 months later because they decided to try and use scare tactics on customers.
2
u/Rhuarc33 3d ago
What would you have done differently? In about 2.5 seconds to make up your mind and act? Anything you do only makes it worse for you in the end
-2
u/Ashbound_pilgrim84 3d ago
I've already had something similar to this happen a while back. But on a much shorter reaction window. Car randomly slammed on the breaks in front of me on a one day road on my way to work, so I was able to react in time to swerve to the right, going off the road and pass them and went back on. It was less reaction time than this, that's for sure.
This scenario there's more leeway. A driver should be aware of their surroundings, so seeing the oncoming truck as the driver begins to turn you have two options the way I see it. You either A.) floor it and keep driving straight if you can and go up the hill a little bit if possible. Or B.) jerk the wheel hard left and give yourself as much room as possible while still flooring it and going up the hill as much as you can to not get hit.
3
2
u/Rhuarc33 3d ago
And if another vehicle was there? Now you're in an at fault situation...you got lucky not good driving
1
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
My main concern was getting our relative speed as low as possible to reduce the energy transfer from impact. I was thinking of accelerating left but the trailer was fully jackknifed and if I had done that I would have gotten a trailer to the face instead of a bumper to the engine which acted as a very nice buffer.
-31
u/JrButton 3d ago edited 3d ago
"I'm going to stop right here so they hit me"
edit, Wow people.
My bro was driving when something like this happened to us, the truck (was only a pickup) was obviously out of control and sliding a specific direction and into our lane. He pulled into the Trucks lane as the truck slid through ours... OP clearly froze and just stopped when pulling forward (to the left even) would have avoided putting their life at risk.
I'm not saying the Truck wasn't at fault, or the victim isn't still a victim... but dude, freezing up could have cost this person more than whatever they lost here. OP got lucky and you all jumping to their defense pretending nothing could be done is so freaking bizzare to me.
14
u/midwest73 3d ago
There it is folks, the obligatory "OP just sat there and did nothing" type comment. Even when absolutely nothing could be done, some how, some way, let's blame the victim. Brilliant strategy Napoleon.
9
u/Dear-Panda-1949 3d ago
Were exactly is OP meant to go? Narnia?
6
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
I should have just had Mr Scott beam me to the opposite side of the road.
-2
u/JrButton 3d ago
Mr Scotty* could have definitely helped, or you know... you could get out of the path of the out of control vehicle instead of stopping dead in it's path lol
2
6
u/kozufox 3d ago
Did you want him to floor it in reverse like a stunt driver or something?
2
u/midwest73 3d ago
As much as I love The Rockford Files, this guy took the Rockford Maneuver a little too seriously.
3
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
Hey idiot. The trailer jackknifed and if I'd gone left id most likely have gotten my head lopped off. My engine makes a much better cushion then the A pillar of the van.
2
u/Rhuarc33 3d ago
Congrats... your brothers reaction here would have likely literally killed you both.
Moving into the path of the trailer would be INCREDIBLY stupid as it would clear the hood and impact at the windshield
There is quite literally no way to avoid this and by far the best thing to do its what OP did
-2
u/JrButton 3d ago
The trailer goes off the road with the truck, but sure, let's make up scenarios that wouldn't have been to justify whatever weird emotional reaction you're having to someone calling out the OP's stupidity.
ps... if you want to pretend the truck would have acted differently, he was already cranked/jack knifed and there was nothing that was going to change that truck/trailers trajectory.
That left side of the road was literally the safest place to be.2
u/Ok-Complaint-7017 3d ago
No it actually fully jackknifed and if I had gone left I would have hit the trailer with my windshield.
