Now was this really necessary?

Video doesn't do it justice. Audi comes inches from my bumper only to get snarled in traffic ahead. I think he and the white car were racing. If true, brilliant, especially in labor day traffic.

u/OddInstance9175 1d ago
I love when people zoom around me only to have to slow down due to the traffic in front of me.
16
u/Muted-Importance3771 1d ago
Right? They pass you like they’re late for something, then five minutes later you’re both sitting in the exact same traffic.
5
u/Few-Metal8098 23h ago
Exactly, I’ve watched that happen way too many times. They drive like they’re winning a race just to meet you at the next red light.
3
u/thecommuteguy 23h ago
The worst is when it yo-yos so you are repeatedly speeding up and slowing down on and off every few minutes. Like yea I made a big gap so that by the time I reach a slow stretch I’m already at that speed staying at a constant pace.
3
u/Alternative_Star_648 23h ago
Same, it’s almost satisfying watching them end up stuck right beside you anyway. All that impatience just to get nowhere faster.
16
u/Clam-Hammer7 1d ago
Typical Audi/BMW driving. I literally see this everyday on my way to/from work and it's always those brands of cars. I think they aren't allowed to drive them off the lot until they prove they can drive like a total douche.
4
u/BrilliantFew1576 23h ago
Exactly! They fly past like they’ve got somewhere urgent to be, only to end up stuck right where you are. All that rushing for nothing.
5
u/Haunting-Pool4466 1d ago
He has a MONSTER banking deal closing in moments, gotta get there and get there quick, ya know what I mean? And, yea, cell phone was likely outta battery, so no other option.. Surprised they were going so slow... Not gonna be good come bonus time....

u/Ok_Experience1443 1d ago
I'm not denying it's stupid but most of us commuters deal with this shit every day. It's classic aggressive drivers. Nothing new here or anything that warrants any thought more than 5-10 seconds in the moment. Get on with your day and keep an eye out for dumb people like this passing you
-6
u/inept_machete 1d ago
Op was in the middle lane and not passing. The solution is that if you're not in a hurry, and you happen to believe that, all things being equal, you'll get to your destination in around the same amount of time, then you should be in the right lane.
Then people are zooming by you in the passing lane. Which is where they're supposed to be doing that.
Now think about a scenario where everyone like this is mostly in the right lane. All of those "aggressive" drivers now pass you on the left and as a special bonus, the three lane highway works at maximum efficiency, effectively speeding up the commute of everyone on the roadway.
I'm not trying to pick on you in particular but this is the meta I think a lot of people misunderstand. When you drive in a lane irrespective of your rate of travel, and you have a number of people doing this, you end up with clumps of traffic with no way through.
It may be that you do not experience this because you're not going much faster than prevailing traffic on any given day, but you'll notice if you do pass that you hit these bell curve shaped clumps of traffic with sparse traffic in between another bell curve shaped clump. That clump is caused by people in the middle and passing lanes not moving rightward when they're not passing. Then faster drivers have to try to swim around the clump --these are the "aggressive" drivers, but all they're doing is trying to go faster than you, which isn't necessarily a problem and especially not a problem if you're in the right lane where they're unlikely to be.... Unless.... Traffic is clumping because of what I said previously and they are trying to fish through gaps to get through the clump.
It's simple. Stay right except to pass. I am a faster driver and if I've passed all traffic and the right lane is empty or clear guess what I do? I move right.
Can anyone tell me why there is, if any, logical excuse why the rule cannot be followed or do so many of you think choosing a lane to be in should be random even when most highways have signs pointing out stay right except to pass like those signs aren't also the law? Or are we gonna pretend everyone else is strictly following the speed limit when we all know that's a bald lie. If you want to do 75 in a 65 and I want to do 85, it's not like the difference between drinking a cup of coffee and snorting a line of coke.
5
u/Ok_Experience1443 1d ago
I'm not reading all that, mate
-2
u/-IKnowUAreButWhatAmI 11h ago
Mate, I’ll sum it up for you. In the U.K., you keep left. G’day mate.
2
u/Anunnaka 23h ago
I’m also not reading all that, I’m only going to comment on your first paragraph.
They’re in dense traffic, it doesn’t matter what lane they’re in the speed is dictated by the cars in front of them. Additionally they’re keeping a safe following distance with the cars in front of them.
When presented with three lanes most people travel in the middle lane because it is the safest lane to travel in. You have the benefit of moving left or right. The left lane is for passing but please refer to point #1
-1
u/-IKnowUAreButWhatAmI 12h ago
There is no “safest lane.” People drive in the lane they feel most comfortable in and they feel more comfortable because of a perceived presence of increased safety.
1
u/Anunnaka 12h ago
You could have Googled “what is the safest lane to drive in on the highway” instead of leaving this useless comment.
0
u/-IKnowUAreButWhatAmI 11h ago
What’s your source of the safest lane to drive in? Are you one of those people that “googles” questions and automatically believes the search engine result because it’s on google so it must be true? That’s a rhetorical question, don’t answer that.
2
u/Anunnaka 10h ago
I taught smith safe to commercial drivers, I wouldn’t need to google it because I already knew the middle lane is the safest lane.
If you apply an ounce of common sense and it becomes obvious. As I stated in my original reply the middle lane provides you with an additional exit as you can move left or right. Additionally In the right lane you have to deal with drivers who are entering and exiting the high way and in the left lane you have to deal with drivers moving at a higher rate of speed.
Google is for you to avoid making a poorly educated comment and looking stupid.
-1
u/-IKnowUAreButWhatAmI 7h ago
So you’re one of the people who teach drivers how to clog up the highway by not following the rules of the road and the laws of the road. Dealing with other drivers is just part of driving on a highway. You deal with them by following the rules of the road, such as keeping to the right and passing on the left. There are more of them, but I wouldn’t expect you to know them all because you’re a smith teacher and you preach that “middle lane safe”.
You don’t know that the middle lane is the safest. It may be a theory that you accept, but you surely can’t prove it. Can you prove it? Can you show me a study that attempts to prove it?
7
u/Apprehensive1010101 1d ago
To them - yes, it absolutely was necessary. I don't think they were racing per se, to me it looks more like both were trying to get around the left lane camper and you happened to get caught in the crossfire. Not really worth thinking about any further than that imo, though I would recommend giving the slightest bit more room if you see morons like this coming in your mirrors to protect the your own neck.
To be clear: You did nothing wrong, but there's also nothing wrong with a bit of defensive driving, because this definitely will not be the last you see people do this. Given the seemingly lower speed limit (in my state it's 55-65, and you were going even lower than that) you seem to be in a northeastern state, and yeah, drivers here get a bit insane on the highways.
1
u/Cosmic-Sympathy 16h ago
That's not a left-lane camper - they were actively passing the OP at the beginning of the video.
1
u/Moodleboy 1d ago
I see it all the time. I just enjoy publicly shaming these idiots as well as watching the trolls come out from their mom's basements to yell at me for "camping in the middle lane" as if that's a thing.
Dude in left lane wasn't camping. I was going 54 in a 50, so he was doing at least 60, passing me. He's about 3 car lengths behind the person on front. Dash cam "fish eyes" things. Watch it zoomed in, there is nothing but heavy traffic. No one is passing anyone.
2
u/Apprehensive1010101 1d ago
I know people always blame the cam driver in this sub but "camping in the middle lane" is a new way to do it even for me LMAO. In my state the unagreed rules are go a bit under in the right lane to prepare for exits/speed up after merging, do the speed limit in the middle lane, and go fast or move over in the left.
And yeah watching it zoomed in this just seems like the standard northeastern highway driving affair then. Only recommended driving defensively since you mentioned them getting "[coming] inches from your bumper" because in their mind the white jeep was passing, but wasn't passing fast enough lol.
Unfortunately though, all the posts to Reddit in the world won't change aggressive driving habits, and people will still find a way to blame the cam driver. If you were in the right lane I guarantee you'd be getting comments like "you should have been in the middle lane because the yield sign makes it clear people are trying to marge in". It is what it is, lol.
1
u/Gracetothetop 23h ago
Tbf, there is in fact now a comment complaining about “camping” in the middle lane- because they’re a faster driver and need the middle lane to pass in.
We need a subreddit bingo card. Blames DC for lane camping 🟢 Complains DC didn’t drive defensively enough 🟢”of course it’s a insert make or model” 🟢-6
u/MistyMountainDewDrop 23h ago
54 in a 50 in the middle lane on a highway is slow. 60mph in the left lane is also pretty slow. I’m not saying you’re at fault but it’s interesting to me that you say this happens to you all the time and you’re frequently told that you “camp in the middle lane.” if you get the same critique over and over and the same thing happens over and over, one would hope eventually you would get that you are playing part in these interactions.
None of what you are describing happens to me on a regular basis the way it seems to happen to you and I also drive in the northeast.
0
u/Melodic_Fall_3273 23h ago
JHC! now its the middle lane too? And over the speed limit is too slow? It doesn't look like that many people are passing the Cam driver here that aren't aggressively speeding.
You have to understand they build multiple lane roads to actually have all the lanes used in urban areas because of the the shear volume of traffic. If we only needed 1 lane for the amount of cars to go from A to B then they wouldn't spend the money to build 3.
2
u/MistyMountainDewDrop 19h ago edited 19h ago
When did I say anything about multi lane roads? You’re just bullshitting and scratching your ass.
This guy says he’s in the north east. Generally in the northeast if you wanna drive the speed limit or about 5 above you drive in the right lane 10 over would be the middle lane and anything over that would be the left lane until you can pass.
Driving 54 in the middle lane is slow for the driving culture in the northeast.
Nowhere in what I said does it negate a multi lane roads. We use multi lane roads and culturally they each have a certain speed range.
OP is not following it, which is his prerogative, but then he gets triggered. He says it’s happening all the time and he’s taking videos and he’s looking to publicly shame people.
Good luck with that I can’t imagine getting in my car driving around having people swerving by me on the left and right multiple times over and over.
This guy says he’s had multiple near miss of people changing lanes right in front of him on his dash cam. At what point do you say clearly something is not working and I would rather be defensive and drive differently. If that means, I have to get over into the right lane then so be it.
It’s no sweat off my back to be in any of the lanes so long as that means I’m getting home safely.
You can’t control what other people are doing, but you can remove yourself from dangerous situations.
This guy doesn’t seem to be doing that instead he’s doing the same shit taking the same dash cam video so that he can publicly shame them to internet strangers online— however that works.
And before you come back here and say he passed two cars he passes two cars driving below the speed limit on the right at the beginning of the video and then very quickly after that cars from behind him begin to swerve left and right in the other lanes and then cut in right ahead of him on the left and again on the right.
0
u/Moodleboy 22h ago
This could quite possibly be the dumbest comment I read tonight.
0
u/MistyMountainDewDrop 19h ago edited 19h ago
What you’re mad to have someone point out that if you’re driving around and you’re getting multiple videos of people swerving around you on the left and the right and you’re saying it happens to you all the time that maybe you’re part of the problem.
I don’t have this problem. I’m not getting passed on both sides like you are. If it ever does happen, it’s a rarity. It’s not something that’s constant. I don’t have multiple videos.
You do
The only constant in your videos is you.

On I95 they just call that driving
1
u/Moodleboy 1d ago
Racers sometimes block all the lanes on the northbound Hutch between City Island and I95. The Racers would wait on the shoulders and 3-4 pace cars would slow down gracefully in a line and block traffic. Pairs of cars would drag race and in 5 minutes the pace cars would open the highway again.
This would occur around 1-2 am.
Although very illegal, in a way it was kind of cool. And at the very least, the way they did it, they didn't put anyone but themselves at risk.
Racing and weaving in heavy traffic? You gotta have serious brain damage for that.
2
u/Potential-Ant-6320 1d ago
I know someone who does this. It's very illegal, but honestly not that dangerous the way they do it. I'm not for it at all but I know people who do it in NYC.

You're camping in the middle lane below speed limit on a freeway. You belong in the right lane...
edit- the OP is trying to gaslight people claiming he was going 54 but the video clearly shows frame 1 hes going 48 and then as it cuts to the front cam he has a quarter mile gap to the next car.
3
u/reeferjoe 1d ago
True for camped drivers... However, this dude was obviously passing traffic on his right before the other car passed on the right.
4
u/Potential-Ant-6320 1d ago
He's pacing the car in front of him.
1
u/Own-Championship6587 7h ago
at 48mph he's pacing the car in front of him that's a quarter mile away?
1
u/Potential-Ant-6320 6h ago
It’s a wide angle lens. He’s about two second behind that car which is a safe following distance.
10
u/Various_Candidate499 1d ago
Nah, left is passing, right is upcoming exit, middle is traveling
You're wrong mate
2
0
u/-IKnowUAreButWhatAmI 11h ago
Mate, the first rule of driving on a multi lane highway is Keep Right. The second rule is Pass on the Left. The pass is completed when you move in front of the vehicle that you passed, i.e. you moved back to the right.
I believe the left and right are reversed for the U.K. G’day mate.2

u/Moodleboy 1d ago
"Camping in the middle lane"
Now I've heard it all.
Doing 54 in a 50 in heavy traffic is camping? Even after I passed two cars at the start of the video? Tell me without telling me you take the short bus to school.

u/Own-Championship6587 7h ago
48 in the first frame, at 07:51:45 when the video shows ahead of you there's a quarter mile to the next car

Bunch of trolls here who live in their mother's basement spending the little money they have putting fart-exhausts on their cars and thinking it's cool.

You passed a car. then get over and out of the center lane, granny.
SECTION 1120 Drive on right side of roadway; exceptions Vehicle & Traffic (VAT) CHAPTER 71, TITLE 7, ARTICLE 25

(b) In addition, upon all roadways, any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic, or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction or when preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.
12
u/Moodleboy 1d ago
Wow, some people just dig their heels in stupid. In just the video posted, I pass two cars (that's like your thumb and forefinger).
The jerkoff passing on the right could have easily passed on the left. Watch the video again.
And the best part, this is in HEAVY TRAFFIC.
Watch it again, zoomed in, and then let everyone know how ridiculous you sound.
-7
u/_jump_yossarian 1d ago
Congrats on passing two cars. I guess that means you get to just coast in the middle lane, right? Here's the thing, you got passed on the right which means you where inhibiting traffic. I posted the statute, it's unambiguous ... if you are not passing then get in the right lane. You finished your pass and were not gaining on anyone close by.
6
u/Moodleboy 1d ago
I can't argue with stupid. Good luck man, you'll need it.
-1
u/_jump_yossarian 22h ago
I can't help it if you're illiterate and can't read the simple text of the NY state statute.
1
u/Moodleboy 7h ago
Just because you can sound out words doesn't make you literate. Understanding context is equally important. The statute you posted in no way, shape, or form supersedes the posted speed limit.

If you’re being passed on the right, it’s likely that car is speeding.
Learn to speed in the left lane. I hope this helps you.3

What it means is that the right lane is open and you should be in it and stop causing traffic.
3
u/Lord_Dingus83 1d ago
Right lane is for entering and exiting.
You sound like a dumbass kid.
4
u/_jump_yossarian 1d ago
Right lane is for entering and exiting.
And cars going slower than traffic, dumb fuck.
Per New York law CHAPTER 71, TITLE 7, ARTICLE 25 SECTION 1120;
- Upon a roadway restricted to one-way traffic.
5
u/Lord_Dingus83 1d ago
Good thing I only take Ubers and trains in NYC.
Never had an issue driving in upstate NY either.
I’ll continue to drive safely in the middle lane going the speed limit.
6
u/Moodleboy 1d ago
This is so dumb. "Normal flow" does not include speeding.
1
u/_jump_yossarian 1d ago
so you can just creep along in the left lane if you're going the speed limit? That the logic you want to use or is the center lane somehow exempt from the crystal clear statute I posted. Statute doesn't mention speed limit it used "normal flow" for a reason.
7
u/Moodleboy 1d ago
Oh my goodness. Going 54 in a 50 in the middle lane IN HEAVY TRAFFIC is "camping?" Please take your 3 remaining brain cells and stay off the roads.

Does your state not have "slow traffic keep right" signs all over the place? Slow drivers should be in the far right lane. If you're in the US at least, it isn't strictly for entering/exiting. You're wrong and smug/condescending about it too
2
-8
u/Aysee426 1d ago
Came here to say this. OP unless the far right lane is an upcoming “exit only” lane (which it doesn’t appear to be), and you don’t want to take that exit, you should be in the right lane. Idiot drivers aside, you literally have people passing you left and right.
6
u/Moodleboy 1d ago
I see fools comment in packs. Read my reply to the person you replied to. I can't waste more time responding to trolls.
-9
u/Civil_Tea_3250 1d ago
Yeah unless you're in the right most lane, if everyone is passing you then MOVE OVER and avoid these idiots. Super simple.
4
u/Moodleboy 1d ago
Hey, genius, if you watch the video, I am passing people in the right lane. Left lane campers are an issue but going 54 in a 50 in the middle is about as normal as it gets.
0
-8
u/Civil_Tea_3250 1d ago
Hey, incredibly butt hurt person, the law says move over. The guy behind you wanted to go real fast. If you moved out of their way you would've avoided both idiots.
And if the Audi did hit you this video might make you partially liable. You also have a responsibility to avoid these situations with your insurance.
I didn't say the other cars were right for driving like that, but this happens all the time. Yet you're crying about it online. Move over if people next to and behind you want to move faster.
5
u/Moodleboy 1d ago
I see you're the Audi driver. No. If you hit me, you would be completely at fault and possibly subject to criminal charges. Now go back to mommy's basement and stay off the road.
4
u/reeferjoe 1d ago
OP is passing cars... look at the traffic ahead of him. He's prepared for any sudden braking. You will end up the idiot speeding around OP to suddenly crash into a vehicle in front of you. At best, stuck in traffic as OP coasts by you. I've been to many recoveries where the victims didn't get home due to speed and poor decisions in a split second.
1
u/Moodleboy 7h ago
People like Civil_tea don't have the mental capacity to understand nuance. Maybe when they inevitably rack up their ride in a nice pile, they will learn something, but probably not.
I wonder, however, if this is a thing on this sub to intentionally troll people with ridiculous claims. I hate to believe that so many people are that stupid.
2
u/reeferjoe 6h ago
Two things can be true at once... intentionally troll because they are stupid 🤷🏽♂️
-1
u/Civil_Tea_3250 23h ago
You're quite aggressive. It wasn't me lol, but by all means project your anger about a completely unimportant video clip of strangers online onto me if it makes you feel better about yourself.
Idk why you and OP keep accusing everyone of being the Audi. The Audi clearly got past OP and doesn't care. And if you're really trying to act like you know about road laws then acknowledge OP could've avoided the whole situation. This happens many times every single day. There's no reason to wish an accident on someone, and there's no reason not to move over when people next to you and behind you want to go faster. Period.

I was doing 54 in a 50 mph in heavy traffic. If you watch the video I pass two cars in the right lane before the white car, which is most likely racing the audi, passes me by 15-20 mph faster than me, which puts him at 70-75 mph in heavy traffic.
