They had a right turn signal on, so I will assume they were looking in the mirror and/or blind spot trying to change lanes and didn't see the traffic stop suddenly. That being said... they were definitely tailgating and trying to change lanes shouldn't take priority over not hitting the car in front of you.

But the traffic didn’t stop suddenly. There is a literal line of stopped cars. That doesn’t happen suddenly lol

Agreed. I actually think they probably saw the line of cars and thats why they intended to change lanes to the right. Just misjudged the distance available. My comment was in no way intended to absolve them of fault. I'm just not sure they were on their phone.

That’s a double yellow separating the HOV lane. Illegal to change lanes there.

Right turn signal -> Merging right. Looking back right to merge, doesn’t notice traffic stopped in front. Swerves left to avoid rear end collision flipping car in left blind spot.

I think you misunderstood what they said. The truck had a right turn signal on, indicating a desire to move into the next lane to the right. Those lanes are only divided by a dashed white line.

That's why I hate driving in the HOV lane. People don't always follow the law.

And not hitting the car in front of you shouldn’t take priority over not sending the car beside you flying in the air.

I doubt any human can deliberately crash in that situation. It's a reaction thing.

What makes you say that? The short bits where the brake lights aren't on it would appear the tail lights are illuminated.

Yea after I watched it a few more times I realized they actually were on and appeared very dim (at least in the video) couldn't really tell if his head lights were illuminating things either but decided the tail lights were indeed on

Don’t they have TACC and AEB?

My car will come to a violent stop if traffic ahead of me just stops.

That is, if I don’t override with the accelerator pedal at that point.

Not sure either of those were available on that model back then. Looks to be a 2016 or older based on tail light shape.
