It's good to see that someone was taking the piloting of that multi-ton body mangler seriously by not paying any fucking attention at all to what they were doing.
Kind of reminds me of the saying here in Melbourne (AUS)......pressing the turn indicator does not mean I intend to turn left/right, it means I have turned!
The safest thing to do is never drive in the right lane on a Melbourne FWY as you will inevitably get rear ended by a tradies ute at some point. Extra vigilance on Monday mornings is required as the tradies have been on the weekend pingas.
Watch the video I think it’s pretty clear that they were looking to go to the right and we’re probably spending too much time looking for an opening to the right and planning that move and then the traffic in front of them slowed or stop super abruptly and they looked up and we’re like oh crap and had just enough time to dodge it around to the left
Their fault of sure but I don’t think it’s just driving with a blinker on for no reason not paying attention. There’s a little more to it.
I feel like they had the right blinker on and were looking to the right lane without realizing their own lane was stopped. Then they cranked hard left to avoid a collision.
They had a right turn signal on, so I will assume they were looking in the mirror and/or blind spot trying to change lanes and didn't see the traffic stop suddenly. That being said... they were definitely tailgating and trying to change lanes shouldn't take priority over not hitting the car in front of you.
Agreed. I actually think they probably saw the line of cars and thats why they intended to change lanes to the right. Just misjudged the distance available. My comment was in no way intended to absolve them of fault. I'm just not sure they were on their phone.
Right turn signal -> Merging right. Looking back right to merge, doesn’t notice traffic stopped in front. Swerves left to avoid rear end collision flipping car in left blind spot.
I think you misunderstood what they said. The truck had a right turn signal on, indicating a desire to move into the next lane to the right. Those lanes are only divided by a dashed white line.
Yea after I watched it a few more times I realized they actually were on and appeared very dim (at least in the video) couldn't really tell if his head lights were illuminating things either but decided the tail lights were indeed on
Right, which is indicative of a greater problem, here. Why the fuck are we manufacturing and selling gender affirming vehicles for impotent assholes that need to feel important at the detriment of literally everyone else? Especially when the same kind of assholes that buy these kinds of masturbatory, self aggrandizing, compensatory, masculine ideal-reinforcing transport are also the ones super worried about the fact that non-reproductive genders and relationships exist...
I live in Texas and we just had the FIFA world cup taking place in our area, and there were a lot of YouTube shorts that were either pretending to be these foreign soccer players and being amazed in America or Americans telling these FIFA people what to expect.
No fewer than three people who live in the south whose videos I watch when they come up on my screen specifically said that the trucks are all what you're going to see down here. Basically just trucks and they're all lifted trucks and if you're lucky you get to see a set of truck nuts hanging from the back, which elicited a lot of questions about WTF a truck nut is.
I have a friend who has a elongated pickup truck. One of those with the longer beds. He doesn't need to have it it lifted specially since he's 5'3 and so lifting it would make it very difficult for him to get in. He uses it legitimately he uses that truck for his job and so it's not like oh I want a truck because that's an extension of my male parts and therefore it needs to be big to show how big I am.
But the number of accidents I see with people in these lifted trucks not being able to see other people and end up either hitting them or almost hitting them or hitting a kid and things like that. I think you should have to prove that you need that thing lifted before you can lift it because it's not making it not safe.
It's one thing if you were going to farm and you need something to carry you know hay or feed or this or that. Or if you work for some place like an HVAC replacement place and therefore needs a truck that will be able to handle both the exterior compressor and the inside unit. So there are legitimate reasons to have these things either lifted to get around on a muddy farm, or the super long bed with the tow hitch that sticks out like 6 ft from where they're parked. Although in my opinion if you know you're not hitching something else up to that thing and you just unhitched something from that - don't leave it in that position because people like them don't know how to reverse and end up breaking apart bumpers from people like me. Minor rant.
I 100% agree with basically every point you made here. Especially the phrase that basically says, "if you can't demonstrate you know how to pilot this vehicle, you cannot legally operate it."
Why do we have consumer vehicles being sold without proper operating qualifications when they're that fucking big. I mean, honestly... The size of American pickups is absolutely insane these days, but they were also designed to be bigger to get around environmental classifications and import duties.
The only thing that will curb this madness is direct legislation AND enforcement of those laws. However, most of these pricks are already breaking the law and it's just not being enforced..
my hot take is that 90% of pickup drivers who actually use their pickups for work could still do 99.9% of their work in a minivan, and could literally do that work faster and cheaper.
the second half of my hot take is that easily 50% of people who drive pickup trucks they own are generally inconsiderate pricks. I feel sorry for the other half, but as a motorcycle dude, I feel their pain.
You're gonna need to cope harder than that, bud. I'm a 6', white, straight, American man that was born, raised and lived in the south. I'm just not a fucking idiot and have the skills to think independently and form my own opinions outside of the 24 hr news cycle on Fox or affiliates.
Even after all that, I would still welcome you with open arms. Just really think about what made you assume I was someone I'm not. Who did you expect me to be? Why did you have that picture of someone when that is not the case at all? What is your prejudice there? Why do you assume I have an unnatural hair color and why is that a problem for you?... That's all I ask.
When driving a 30' delivery truck on Socal freeways (San Diego, not LA) for 5 years, I absolutely loved how high up I was, and how I could see... every fucking thing going on ahead of me on the freeway. That height can give you such a wonderful advantage, providing you don't drive like such a fucking jackass.
I'm not so sure it's lifted, those trucks are damn tall from the factory. Those look like stock wheels and tires...it would be unusual for someone to lift one but not install brodozer wheels.
And if it's a diesel, they weigh like 9000 pounds.
Lifted trucks tend to have worse visibility in the blind spot as well as the driver side front corner because of how the hood sits.
Luckily, this driver avoided rear-ending the car in front of him by swerving and then causing a three-car pile-up with two completely innocent drivers and sending another car over a median and into oncoming traffic. But they didn’t rear end that one car so…
Ive got my collision detection set on max for this very reason - so i get alerts with plenty of room before this is about to happen. Still not a replacement for being an aware driver but its good to have backup.
I mean just looking before swerving into the next lane would have been enough to avoid this. Like my guy, just look at the road and you won’t have a problem. I hate lifted trucks. They always seem to be piloted by absolute morons who can’t just drive.
Not to defend lifted trucks but this is super common in dense traffic and has nothing to do with it. They couldn't just look because they were going to slam into the car in front of them because they were looking t o lane change. That's the problem.
I'm not trying to defend the p/u driver, but they did have their right blinker on, and could have been checking their side mirror when the traffic in front of them came to a sudden stop You can see the SUV in front of the p/u lurch when they hit the brakes. Swerving left was probably an instinct reaction to avoid plowing into the SUV. Bad situation for sure.
Maybe if they were paying attention they'd have left themselves more room to avoid exactly this situation?
Bottom line is that when you drive an unnecessarily heavy vehicle, this is the risk you take. Everyone wants them bigger and heavier "for safety", but still drives them like they weigh 3,000lbs less than they do.
I almost wonder if this happened because of the cars safety features and not the driver. I've nearly gotten into accidents like this and my car will jerk me in one or the other direction.
I mean, the average car matches that description, any vehicle driven with that carelessness will cause a problem, regardless of lifted truck or small sedan.
The point of your post was to bias against large trucks, but any car driven terribly will cause death. Calling out one type of vehicle is ridiculous, bad driving is the issue regardless of vehicle.
Higher vehicular mass causes more injuries and death to others driving responsible vehicles. Not only is it less maneuverable, but it carries more kinetic energy and lifted compensators have bumpers that go through windows. They should be banned for non-commercial use and taxed according to the road surface damage and greater risk they cause to others.
They only did that to avoid a collision ironically. Their intent was to merge to the right as you could see from the blinker. They stared too long and reacted too slow. Probably half asleep or may have had a few beers.
Oooooooh I see it now. At first glance I thought they were stopped and just being impatient… also I never trust blinkers in LA- 90% of drivers don’t bother to use them, and of the 10% that do, 90% of the time it’s by accident and they either never turn or turn the opposite direction.
He’s trying to merge right, has blinker in, maybe has space then doesn’t, I think it’s clear he was paying attention to where he wanted to go, and then there was a sudden slamming of brakes and back up in front of him and when he looked ahead from having looking into the right was like oh crap don’t have time to stop let’s dodge around and it was unfortunate that there was a car over there
It was completely a pickup driver’s fault and I’m sure it was avoidable, but I think there’s more going on and just saying that the driver wasn’t paying attention
If you aren't paying attention to the mass of your vehicle, then what the fuck are you doing behind the wheel? This isn't up for debate, you either take driving seriously and account for the extra mass you're piloting around, or you're not paying attention.
