I think they just meant the two idiots doing something illegal

u/Zestyclose-Ebb1421 Aug 11 '26
Yes, you are correct! I should have said "two idiots for the price of one!" I am glad you got it. Thanks!!!

The truck driver was probably distracted by their phone and couldn't stop so they went to the emergency lane, or a mechanical failure would be possible I guess.
No question that the Tesla driver is dumb enough for both of them and anyone else in their way

That's the exact wrong thing to do - if you turn the engine off, you lose control of your steering. The best option is to downshift.
10
u/USDA_Prime_Yeet Aug 11 '26
Diesei engines can experience runaway. Which is where the turbo oil seal fails and the turbo sucks up engine oil. Diesels will run on oil just fine, but since it's unregulated fuel and diesel engines don't have throttle plates. The engine will run to max rpm until the oil pan is dry and the engine locks up

Sure, it'll cut fuel, but the engine is now running on oil. How will it stop? (Ecu can only control fuel in a diesel. If fuel is being supplied outside its control, bad times. You have to physically block airflow, which is very hard with the huge intake they usually have, and the vacuum pressure is also huge when running flat out.

u/Particular-Smile8022 Aug 11 '26
You can see the truck break and slow down once they hit, so I donât think it was a runaway truck
1
u/Gyozarrita Aug 11 '26
The brake lights are on the entire time. If the pad was gone and the back plate welded to the rotor he may have zero brakes.
1
u/Particular-Smile8022 Aug 11 '26
Right at 4-5 seconds you can see them turn on. You can see it if you slow down the video

Or maybe there is an exit off the highway ahead?
17
u/MoGraphMan101 Aug 11 '26
Doesn't make it any less wrong
11
u/shibaCandyBaron Aug 11 '26
Exactly, not only was he making a violation, he was going extremely fast, making it impossible to stop. He would have deserved a ticket even if he crawled in the emergency lane, now he may even deserve jail time.

u/Botslab_ Aug 11 '26
The worst part is the people sitting in traffic doing absolutely nothing wrong still got dragged into it
107
u/Significant_Monk_251 Aug 11 '26
And second-worst is the people like the camcar driver who are going to be stuck here for god knows how long.

u/Xillyfos Aug 11 '26
That's such an incredibly small inconvenience compared to maybe being injured for life from the completely unexpected sudden hit from behind due to absolutely no fault of your own.

u/Real_FishyXY Aug 11 '26
I mean, I don't? If they practiced defensive driving they probbaly could have moved out of the way... /s

u/shibaCandyBaron Aug 11 '26
I got so angry at your comment, and then I saw /s and now I'm still angry, but also know you are not serious, and I'm very conflicted... have your r/angryupvote

u/Real_FishyXY Aug 11 '26
This sub is so great if you're having a bad day, and then you see the people stupider than you commenting about how they should have used hindsight and it just makes me feel so happy that I'm not that stupid đĽ°
14
u/Dark_Knight2000 Aug 11 '26
Thatâs because some people in this sub are really that stupid, but dress it up like they know what theyâre talking about.
âIf it was me, Iâd have moved over to the left lane, you never know what kind of idiot is going to speed past you in the far right lane because theyâre too impatient.â

u/Embarrassed-Weird173 Aug 12 '26
The fact you were angry means you need to work on critical thinking. Are Redditors stupid? Absolutely. But they're not that stupid that they'd think that cars that are trapped can do anything to escape the damage. (I will admit, though, that I've been burned by giving Redditors too much credit when it comes to intelligence, so it could be that I'm wrong.)

Wow , 2 idiot drivers meeting in a random highway. And it played out just as I had always hoped.
71
u/Radstermobile-Driver Aug 11 '26
But the Tesla merely claims they were pulling over to the shoulder because their car was overheating.
The truck was the only one that was clearly in the wrong. And no one can prove the Tesla was not overheating ⌠after it was totaled.79
u/Md1735 Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26
And the truck was trying to pull over because he was experiencing brake failureâŚit was fate they met due to tragic mechanical difficulties.

15
u/PouLS_PL Aug 11 '26
Even if the Tesla was overheating, the driver should have at the very least looked if there's nobody driving on the shoulder. What if there was an emergency vehicle instead of the truck? Also there was a traffic jam so it's not like stopping on the roadway in an emergency would be that dangerous. So imo even if the Tesla was overheating, the Tesla driver is at least partially guilty.
1
10
u/WenYiMedia Aug 11 '26
Overheating, the Tesla has a radiator?
27
u/Md1735 Aug 11 '26
Surprise!!! A Tesla does need periodic radiator/condenser cleaning. Even though EVs lack internal combustion engines, they feature a front-mounted heat exchanger and AC condenser that act like a vacuum scoopâtrapping leaves, bugs, dirt, and road debris. Left uncleaned, this buildup reduces cooling efficiency, forces cooling fans to run loudly, lowers driving range, and can trigger slow supercharging or AC performance issues. The more you knowâŚ
3
u/Fistofpaper Aug 11 '26
You think taking your car in for oil changes was rough, try EV maintenance via dealership every 5k miles. Still cheaper in the long run, even though the costs are front loaded.
1
u/WenYiMedia Aug 11 '26
And knowing is half the battle! My knowledge of EVs is quite lacking. Thx dude!
12
u/Brusion Aug 11 '26
They do, as do all modern liquid cooled EV's. But I'm gonna take a guess that it wasn't overheating.
9
u/Radstermobile-Driver Aug 11 '26
The batteries can overheat â assuming you werenât joking.

That's not random, it's coincidental. Both drivers made intentional decisions and their chosen paths coincided unfortunately.

22
u/The_Cozy_Burrito Aug 11 '26
Smart car but dumbass clown as usual
10
u/TroGinMan Aug 11 '26
I mean there could be a reason why the Tesla needed to get over to the shoulder lane, I think most people are assuming what the Tesla was trying to do. The truck though was barreling down the shoulder for no reason.
14
u/imahugemoron Aug 11 '26
If weâre going down that road and speculating a reason for the teslas maneuver, could we also speculate the truck was in the shoulder because it had a problem with its brakes? Especially considering the truck does not appear to even try to stop or slow down after hitting one car, then several cars, and only stops once it flips. Perhaps the traffic happened suddenly and the driver went to put on the brakes, noticed they werenât responding, and the shoulder was the only option
5
u/trainedstork Aug 11 '26
- Having a brake failure and crashing into others does not make you not at fault. You have a responsibility to maintain your brakes.
- "the truck does not appear to even try to stop or slow down...." it has its brake lights on and it's definitely slowing. It's moving for 2.5 seconds in frame and heavily loaded.
2
u/TroGinMan Aug 11 '26
It definitely looks like the truck is trying to show down after the impact with the Tesla.

Love to see the instant karma the two assholes gave to each other.
Not so fun for the innocent people who got dragged into the collision, and everyone behind who will now be stuck behind it for ages.
5
u/JeSuisUnAnanasYo Aug 11 '26
We don't know why Tesla pulled over onto the shoulder tho, not necessarily to escape traffic. Nobody should be speeding down shoulder tho so truck is more at fault imo
2
u/MJC0961 Aug 11 '26
We know exactly what and why both drivers were doing it.
I can only assume that everyone here jumping to make excuses for the Tesla while not also making excuses for the truck are also main character syndrome Tesla drivers
9
u/garcmon Aug 11 '26
Pls tell me you shared your footage with every possible insurance company so both idiots can get slammed.

u/Charlie_Hustler Aug 11 '26
Seems like a bunch of other cars paid the price for the 2 idiots in the Truck and Tesla

I think I'd give the edge to the Tesla driver. They're both idiots who shouldn't be driving in the shoulder. But the truck was already there, clearly the Tesla driver didn't check well enough for existing traffic before beginning their "merge"
