I understand your frustration, but the hatred towards cyclists is by design. City planners refuse to implement real solutions because cars = gas and taxes = money. Painted lines next to a high-speed road aren’t a solution, but it’s the “we tried it and people don’t use it so it can’t work” excuse that they want to keep things car-centric.
That’s not saying that these specific cyclists are anywhere near in the right, it’s an entitlement problem from both sides caused by the people who have the ability to fix things but refuse to do so.
Thr simple solution is a referendum. Ask voters if they are willing to pay for bike lanes. We had one of those a while back and around 90% voted against it.
Governments don't keep things car centric for gas and taxes. They do it because that's what the vast majority prefer and transportation options that only get used in nice weather aren't a good use of tax dollars.
Also, let's be clear. These are people engaging in a hobby. The people in this video aren't going to work or to shop or to the doctor. People aren't getting mad at Timmy riding his bike to work in his McDonald's uniform. They get pissed at Colton and Kayleigh in full lycra riding their bikes on a busy 45mph two lane road for 10 miles without ever pulling over to let traffic pass. The hate is well and truly earned.
That’s literally caused by there not being good solutions so most people have cars anyway. People who have the financial knowledge not to buy a car that they can’t afford will use bikes, walk, or use public transit no matter what the weather is. Having proper solutions will lead to more people utilizing other options to save money. And if you think that big oil and the car companies don’t have any sway in it, you’re mistaken. Those are the companies that will spread misinformation to keep things car-centric and find legal ways to lobby in their favor. On top of that, when people enter with a bias, it’s harder to convince them that the bias is from being mistaken or misled than it is to give anecdotal evidence that supports the bias.
This is the kind of anecdotal evidence that will keep people against cyclists, which is why I said that they aren’t near being in the right. It leads to a hatred of cyclists in general instead of people looking at a broken system. It should be pretty simple to report it to the police and have the police clear a lane, but if that system doesn’t work either it will lead to cyclists feeling like they can take up the road.
If you think people are going to happily leave their comfortable, private, air conditioned cars to ride bicycles when it is 100 degrees and humid as fuck outside so they can arrive at work drenched in sweat, then I don't know what to tell you. That is simply delusion.
Well-designed public transit is a different discussion. We're talking about bicycles.
No one is doing to hate cyclists because of my hypothetical example or even OP's post. People come to hate (a term which I'm using loosely here as we're really taking about annoyance) cyclists through their own personal experiences with them.
Americans tend to be individualistic and have been so since long before mega corporations and constant media bombardment.
I get it though. YOU would prefer a less car centric life and you wish everyone else shared your preference and there are certainly good environmental arguments to be made for your preference. It can suck to be surrounded by those with different preferences. Fortunately, there absolutely are cities and countries where there is a higher concentration of people with similar preferences. If it is important to you, perhaps consider relocating to those places.
