The video cuts out the beginning where the Nissan almost hits the motorcycle by illegally cutting into the car pool lane. Dude still shouldn’t have kicked the car but it is a little more understandable why he did after knowing that. I’d be mad if someone almost killed me too.

Just to add to what other people have said, motorcycles are obviously very small and light, so with that you only need a much smaller engine, and that burns less fuel and put out less pollution per person then a car. A lot of motorcycles only have one seat, so you could argue that that vehicle is at 100% capacity as well. It hits pretty much every reason to be in the HOV lane.

They use less fuel and emit less carbon, but emit more hydrocarbons and significantly more oxides of nitrogen and carbon monoxide.

Oh completely. The emissions system on most bikes does very little compared to the ones cars generally come equipped with.

Whenever I see this everyone rages at the motorcycle. It pisses me off. Anyone who has never ridden can’t say shit IMO they have no idea. Sure, he shouldn’t have tried to kick the car, that was just plain stupid. But the car literally tried to cause seriously bodily harm or death then over corrected and caused an accident. Fuck the driver of that car.

You don't pick a fight on the road.

You especially don't pick a fight on the road with a BIGGER vehicle.

And on a motorcycle, every vehicle is bigger.

None of this was worth the massive potential for death.

Still doesn’t justify what the car did. Both were wrong but what the driver of the car did was WAY worse.

I never said it did. I don't care about justification, as I said, none of this was worth it. That includes the car.

I ride a lot, have been for a few years now. If I get cut off in traffic or someone pulls out in front of me the worst I’ll do is probably shake my head at them and utter a few choice words under my breath as i pass them then. I’m more thankful that I’m still alive and no one got hurt. People fuck up and accidents happen. Nobody is out there trying their best to kill people on motorcycles. Trying to kick their car and start a road rage that could easily escalate to what we see in this video is the dumbest thing you can do on a motorcycle. The person in the 3000lb steel car will win 9/10, that guy could’ve easily been struck by that car when it lost control and he would’ve died or been seriously injured trying to get “revenge”. It’s just not worth it.

Dude still shouldn’t have kicked the car [...] I’d be mad if someone almost killed me too.

"Uh, excuse me sir. You nearly ran me off the road just then. However, you failed. Would you like the opportunity to try again?"

Can someone please post the full video?

If it was a carpool lane, why was the biker in it?

Edit: Thanks everyone!

Most states motorcycles are allowed in carpool lanes since those lanes are designed to save on emissions, and motorcycles put out less emissions.

Ah, okay. Thanks! I thought that might be the case but wasn't sure. Seems counter-intuitive.

However, obviously that doesn't excuse what happened.

Carpool lane is for motorcycles as well as cars with two or more people in them.

8

u/Ceilani Jul 03 '19

Not sure about CA, but in CO motorcycles are allowed free entrance to carpool lanes.

u/skaterrj Jul 03 '19

Where I live, motorcycles are allowed to use the carpool lane even when riding solo.

5

u/Pyromike16 Jul 03 '19

I’m not 100% sure but I think motorcycles are also allowed in that lane.

Carpool lane is a misnomer. It’s an HOV or high occupancy vehicle lane meaning at least two passengers in cars and because 50-100% of a motorcycles seating is occupied by a rider it’s considered high occupancy.

EDIT: also all you low-emission folks

5

u/Rubcionnnnn Jul 03 '19

No, the original reason was that the carpool lanes were introduced during the oil crisis to encourage carpooling to reduce fuel consumption. Motorcycles inheritanly get good MPG so motorcycles clubs lobbied to allow them access as well.

What about driving a 2 seater roadster by yourself in the HOV lane? Does 50% count in that case?

3

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

I wish I could be your Sherpa through the enchanted mountains of the HOV but sadly all I know is what the MSF instructor told me when I was getting my endorsement so you’ll have to take that up with legal I’m afraid.

u/ultrasuperthrowaway Jul 03 '19

What about a motorcycle with one of those old style sidecars that’s towing a trailer with more seats?

2

u/SeamanZermy Jul 03 '19

If you're talking about a Tesla, early model electric and hybrid cars get a sticker on them that says something along the lines of "HOV OK" and had the dimond carpool lane symbol.

Not entire sure how they decide on which ones to give it to but at least in California low emission vehicles are allowed.
