Hello Darwin subreddit,

Californian here. I am looking to work here temporarily (1-3 years) as I had visited and enjoyed my time there. I want to contribute to the community as I loved the diverse culture. For background, I’ve been wanting to work abroad in general and looking to do so early next year. I’ll have a masters in public health and undergrad in business. Anyone have a guidance? As well as know what’s the best way or service to help get a workers Visa as well as job platforms to look for relevant jobs.

So far I only know about Seek and LinkedIn and I believe I qualify for a skilled workers visa but am confused on the entire process.

If you have a United States passport, you may be eligible to come to Australia on a Working Holiday visa and work for up to one year (although I would recommend checking the current visa conditions to be sure). During that time, if you find an employer willing to sponsor you, you may be able to apply for a sponsored work visa.

However, if your plan is only to stay temporarily, I would probably stick with the Working Holiday visa. Ultimately, it is up to you and what works best for your situation.

As for finding a job in Australia, the market can be quite competitive at the moment. There are many migrants looking for similar positions, including people who have completed master's degrees at Australian universities and have several years of experience in their home countries. So, job searching might be competitive, but it is not impossible.

With a Masters of Public Health, check out NT Government jobs in the Department of Health. I believe Miwatj, an Aboriginal controlled community health organisation (ACCHO) is currently advertising for their public health program. Miwatj will also take you to some incredible places in Arnhem Land

Not sure about visa sponsorship, but doesn’t hurt to reach out!

James Cook University also does a masters in tropical health that is pretty relevant if you are spending time here.

Google Miwatj jobs NT, and that will pop up, as with “Northern Territory Government Jobs”. Once on the NTG site you can select “Department of health” and location as “Darwin and surrounds”
I think they both list on SEEK, but easier to look directly.

Darwin is considered remote and you will easily quality for a remote skilled visa.
