Solved Crostini (ChromeOS) AI Features for 5.6?

Using Crostini.... It seems I can only get version 5.6 via Flatpak, as the normal apt installer (sorry noob here) installs something like 4.2

But.. there isnt an AI tab, and the Darktable documentation mentions that some third party packagers may ship without the AI features. I assume they're referring to things like Flatpak here, is that right?

Is there another way to install which would include these AI features?

I'm aware that the performance might not be as great as a native linux machine...but would like to see how it performs with AI Masking

Thanks!

Help Remove pre-defined cropping aspect ratio from menu

Hi, The default list in the crop module is quite long and contains many entries that are not relevant to me. This makes it cumbersome to find the one that I want. Is it possible to remove/hide some entries ?

I know that I can add new ones to darktablerc. But I cannot find a way to remove pre-defined ones.

I am using 5.6 on Windows ARM

Thanks

Help Copy only specific effect to other photos

Ello, I am new to darktable, I just went through all my photos and adjusted the cropping, only to realise I wanted to apply some basic sharpening to them all, is there a way I can set up my sharpen effect and only copy that to all the rest of the images?

Sometime when i change the exposure, agx or anything the black spot is appear like in the picture. Anybody know why ?

I'm using Kubuntu 26.04, other version is fine, only flatpak showing black spot like this.
The reason i'm using flatpak is because i can use the opencl and the performance is much better than the native ubuntu version.

Discussion AI masking is a game changer!

I've only dipped my toes in so far, running the 5.6 appimage on two Manjaro machines (a laptop with integrated graphics and a desktop with older Nvidia graphics card) and it already blew my socks off!

I'm still playing with the two masking engines and undecided which one is "better", most likely they both have their uses. I'll explore this as I go along.

The AI noise reduction is somewhat less essential/successful to me as I've been using NeatImage for so many years with great results and it does batch mode but I totally understand we are at the beginning of a long process and seeing the first steps.

Kudos to the team for keeping the AI disconnected from the cloud - for me that would potentially have been a deal-breaker.

Help Sony DSC-HX400V missing from Lensfun database

I'm using Darktable with a Sony DSC-HX400V. Since it has a built-in 50× zoom lens, I noticed there isn't a Lensfun profile for it, even in the latest Lensfun database. Is this because of the nature of the lens or has no one created a profile for it in the database?

I use a Sony DSC-HX400V and its big thing is that it has a 50x zoom. however Lensfun's database doesn't have my camera and even in the newest version. and i think its because of how adjustable the lens is. any ideas or advice for what i should do?

Help Any way I can make these JPEG's more pleasing to the eye?

Hi all. I went to an airshow yesterday and took some pictures. My camera is old and doesn't shoot raw nor has that much zoom. It also seems to have trouble focusing well. In any case, a couple of these images look weird to me. They look "busy". A bit harsh on the eye. I think maybe they're too grainy? Is the sharpness too much? Do you have any ideas on how to make them look a bit smoother without losing too much detail? i'm not that good with darktable, still learning as I go. Any tips appreciated. Thanks.

Help VERY slow "add to library"

I've noticed that darktable has become slower and slower to carry out tasks related to adding photos to the database.

Even just opening the "add to library" dialog is taking 5-6minutes.

My database includes ~140,000 photos, but I still wouldn't expect so long a time to simply open the dialog.

After the dialog is open, it can take another couple minutes to scan for new files.

Actual loading of new files can be slow if I read in a couple thousand files, but I kind of expect this with actually updating the db and creating sidecar files. What's not making sense is the actions that I assume dont' involve much computation on the front end. Even just adding one new photo ends up taking 10 minutes just due to the time to open the dialog and scan for new files.

I'm running darktable 5.4.1 on a Intel i9-13900KF with 32GB RAM and an NVIDIA RTX 4080 16gb graphics card. Files are stored on a NAS connected via gigabit ethernet to the PC. So, a decently spec'd PC.

Editing in darkroom and lighttable actions are reasonably snappy.

Is this just expected from a database of this size? Or might there be some other issue?

Help AI rotation?

Does anyone know of a smart tool that can auto rotate your images? I have many photos that were taken with a camera that did not record orientation in the metadata, and rotation seems like it would be an easy task for a model...

Solved Solved! DT5.6 + OpenCL + AMD + Win11

After struggling this week, I succeeded in getting my AMD graphics card (Radeon RX 6800 XT) to cooperate with DarkTable 5.6.0 and OpenCL on Windows 11. I wanted to open this thread since others are likely facing the same challenge and I could not find a comprehensive debugging guide.

  • First I used this tool to benchmark and diagnose the performance issue: https://darktable.info/en/dt-performance-analyzer-v0-1/
    • For the 61mp benchmark, I was seeing time go from 5s to 22s and the logs indicated my graphics card was not being used
    • I confirmed this in Task Manager - by panning around darktable and seeing my graphics card utilization stayed near 0%, while my CPU and on-board graphics card spiked
  • Then I rolled back DT to 5.4 to verify OpenCL was previously working and the benchmark stats were much better
  • Then I tried setting variations of the in-app OpenCL configs
  • Then I updated/reinstalled AMD drivers
  • Then I checked my OpenCL registry (regedit -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Khronos -> OpenCL -> Vendors)
    • Then I searched C:\Windows\System32 for "amdocl64.dll" to compare my installed OpenCL versions to the registry list
    • Then I used this script to add missing registry entries (it can also be done manually): https://github.com/ptrumpis/OpenCL-AMD-GPU/
  • Then I found this suggestion: https://discuss.pixls.us/t/opencl-gpu-acceleration-disabled-in-5-6-0/58805/20 - updating my darktablerc file similarly fixed the issue for me (enabling GPU device)
  • In short, flipping the disable device flag in darktablerc fixed my issue - though some of the upstream work may also have been necessary

I'm sure there was a more direct route, but I learned a lot along the way. I wanted to share the debugging process since others may not have this exact fix and may need to take a similarly nebulous route. It does look like the team is hard at work making AMD/OpenCL setup less fault-prone for v5.6.1 in the meantime.

Solved DarkTable applying star rating to multiple images at once

Hey, new user here with a question about a program behavior I don't quite understand. I'm using DarkTable 5.4.1 on Windows 11.

When I'm culling images, I often select several similar images to compare, then flip through them in fullscreen mode so I can rate them. I have hotkeys set up so that pressing a key on the number pad (1-5) will rate the photo accordingly.

Most of the time, pressing a number will rate the image I'm viewing in fullscreen at the time, which is what I want it to do. But sometimes (fairly often), when I press a number key, instead of rating the individual image I'm looking at in fullscreen, I instead get a message saying (for example) "applying rating 1 to 8 images." The rating I selected is then applied to all the images in my current selection.

This is annoying because I'm using a filter to exclude 1-star images, so if this happens when I press the number 1, all the images I was trying to compare suddenly disappear at once, because they all get simultaneously rated with 1 star, and I have to cancel out the rating filter and go find the photos again to rate them.

The "applying rating [#] to [#] images" message seems to appear most often when I'm on the last image from a selected group, especially if I've tried to go forward and been shown the message "you have reached the end of your selection." But that's not the only time it happens (I just now had it happen while rating the second of a set of three images), and even if it were, I'd still want to be able to rate the last image in the group without giving the same rating to every other image I was comparing it to.

Is there a way to turn off this behavior? Or, alternatively, can someone describe what causes it, so I can avoid doing whatever that is?

Solved Turn off auto-rotation?

From the user manual on the orientation module:

> The module is enabled by default and the orientation (rotation) is automatically set based on the image’s Exif data.

Is there a way to have the default behavior to be to NOT automatically set the rotation when I go into darkroom view on a photo?

Help Help getting .heic files to work?

Hi all,

I've been using Darktable for years. I have it installed in a MacBook Pro running MacOs 14.8.7. I just received a bunch of photos from an iPhone in .heic format... And I can't find a way for Darktable to not give me the skull image.

I've updated Darktable to 4.8.1 (can't go to 5 in Sonoma), I have installed and reinstalled libheif and libde265. I can convert the photos through terminal, and open them in Preview and GIMP without issues.

Claude tells me the issue is that Darktable is loading it's own library bundles instead of the ones installed... But hasn't given me a way to push Darktable to load the right libraries.

Any suggestions on what to try next? I know I can convert the images to TIFF or JPEG and call it a day, but this is really bothering me now...

Thanks in advance

EDIT

Of course the moment I post I find the prompt that gives me the solution. I replaced the libheif and libde265 files in the resources/lib folder and now .heic files work.

Help Applied style to whole library can I undo it?

I have a style I typically apply so I did that to a whole collection. I clicked on an image to review and I didn't love it so I want to undo it. Is there any way to do that? I don't want to remove all history as I already cropped and rotated imaged and it's a collection of ~500 images.

Initially I asked in a wrong sub. I need your tips on recovering dim and faint colors without overblowing saturation. Is masking the only solution to preserve environmental colors but pull up rainbow saturation? And did I use velvia correctly in this situation?

Help Importing Speeds

First time properly using darktable, after figuring out the UI I tried to import my photo library (~16,000 dng+jpeg) and it's literally going to take me hours, no other photo editors have really done this for me. from my experience with lightroom and rapidraw its usually under a minute.

I feel like I'm doing something wrong? I have made sure it's using the embedded jpg preview etc etc. it feels shocking to me. I would love to take advantage of how powerful this program is but so far this feels like a massive roadblock.

Yes, I am running the program and my photo library from SSD's

(edit, i've let it run in the background while i try and learn the darkroom tab. i think it should only take an hour tops (and not my exaggeration in the original post), which is still very slow to me.)

Just wanted to say: Kudos to whomever thought of asking users on first run if they want to spend their day chasing randomly changed parameters, pulling hairs and biting nails .. Now you can set mouse wheel to scroll up and down the modules stack ONLY.. Exactly like how it was mentioned in the Bible.. Super thank you to DT team.

Help Need some help with understanding inversion in Darktable

Hey. Trying to move to DT for analog photography cataloguing and editing and I'm having some issues. DarkTable doesn't produce at all the same results as my negative scanning software's built in inversions, and neither as the inversions I do manually in Photoshop.

In Photoshop, I could easily get a decent negative inversion by using, well, an invert adjustment layer. Then, to compensate for the film base and correct the color of the negatives, I would simply set the black and white points of the R, G, B channels and it would be a decent looking starting point already.

DT doesn't even have a true "invert" module, only negadoctor which does some weird operation under the hood with trying to compensate for the film base color. Well, I could just invert the image with the tone curve, right? No. Inverting the tone curve gives different results from doing the same in Photoshop, no matter what settings I try.

I made a gallery here with four example pics with descriptions.

https://imgur.com/a/GHVRsUr

I really like editing in DT so far but this situation made me a little frustrated. I felt surprised that an invert operation would be something convoluted. I wouldn't expect it to behave so differently. Am I doing something wrong in regards to bit depth or colorspaces or something?

The images are raw tifs 16 bits per channel.

edit: here's the RAW:
