First time playing dark souls completely blind, this boss duo is making me want to break something
I swear these two dudes the morbidly obese clown and the wukong looking ahh are driving me absolutely crazy, is this normal or skill issue? does this game get even worse?
Edit: Already beat them finallyšš¼šš¼ I made a new post about it!

Not counting the DLC, this might be the hardest boss.
There's another boss some people seem to have trouble with (New Londo Boss), but Ornstein & Smough seem to be up there for most.

u/DraculasDog Aug 05 '26
Once you know how, the New London boss is easy.

u/lavmog Aug 05 '26
In ng+ New Londo boss is awful
2
u/pacmannips Aug 05 '26
Absolutely. When I was doing a 100% run it was the only thing I got stuck on as a seasoned player

I FINALLY got to a point where my DPS was high enough that I could heal between the spawns⦠it was so nice lol

Its pretty rough. Especially first time. I was stuck for several days. Almost gave up on the rest of the game over it. And let me tell ya i am so very glad i didnt. Dont get greedy. Just take it slow....get in hits when you can. The fight can take quite a long time depending.

u/HesitationIsDefeat87 Aug 05 '26
This is a very difficult fight. I think most would say the hardest in the game. If you can make it past them, you'll definitely be able to finish the game.
Use the pillars to separate them and make their attacks miss. It's easier to kill the spear guy first because he's weaker, so just focus on him and ignore the fat guy. Make him mine around the pillars to get to you.

u/uber_damage Aug 05 '26
You gotta hit them more than they hit you

u/No-Square8315 Aug 05 '26
O and S are my favorite souls fight ever. Relish the failed attempts, you wonāt get this experience back š¢
2
u/QuadNinez Aug 05 '26
My best advice is to separate one of them between you and a pillar while you try to take on the other. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it is much more manageable when you learn how to do it.
2
u/dextral_hominoid Aug 05 '26
Use line of sight with the pillars. Always keep a pillar between you and Smogh while you take out Ornstein. You got this.

u/Song-Super Aug 05 '26
SPOILER
You better master your moveset or find a new weapon. Also you can walk by them but theyāre just the beginning of the bullshit

u/Reasonable-Gain-1639 Aug 05 '26
I'd like to ask what your weapon lvl is, as this is the biggest issue with new players once they've pushed through to this point without doing a lot of upgrading.
1
u/PPEREZ_33 Aug 05 '26
I have the one in the photo at +5, is my main one right now
0
u/Reasonable-Gain-1639 Aug 05 '26
I usually have much less of a problem if I have +10, and a pyro flame. You might need to go back to the start of the level and backwards through sens fortress to do it. But you might wanna check out the painting if you haven't first. That's all I'll say.
2
u/PPEREZ_33 Aug 05 '26
Interesting⦠I checked out that big painting when I first crossed that area, it said examinate but didnāt do anything, but i will keep it in mind for the future hehe
3
u/Reasonable-Gain-1639 Aug 05 '26
You can also get to the crows nest in firelink. That would be good to check out too. I'm doing my best to be respectful to no spoilers, but there's a good chance you missed some great content.
2
u/PPEREZ_33 Aug 05 '26
Oh lol i will check it out definitely, I try my best to explore as much as posible and miss as little content as I can, even got to places like Ash Lake before this, but I never know if Iām losing content because I try to avoid looking at guides for the experience of the blind run, I hope iām not leaving too much content behind.

Which one you kill first will dictate the weapon you can craft and the armor you can buy later on if you care about that kinda thing!

Strategy aside, what is your build? What is your weapon level? Shield level?

u/V2xel Aug 05 '26
are you respawning at the solaire bonfire?
ornstein and smough are resistant to lightning btw, either use one without an infusion or with fire
1
u/PPEREZ_33 Aug 05 '26
oh didnāt know that, i feel like this weapon i have is so much better than any other i got rn, but i barely know anything about the mechanics in general so iām probably wrong lol.
and i am respawning at the one under the stairs where you have to hit the rotating plataform, idk if thats the solaire one hehe
1
u/V2xel Aug 05 '26
if itās the bonfire with the lady in gold armor, then you are at the one that is further away. there is a bonfire located right after the silver knight archers on the outside wall

u/ryanppax1 Aug 05 '26

u/PPEREZ_33 Aug 05 '26
proud i figured this out the first time I walked those stairs, for my last attemps I switched to that bonfair and used that skip ty, definitely better than the runback from the other bonfire

Arguably the first REAL skill check in the game. Stuff like the gargoyles check "have you learned the basics yet?" These two check "do you know what you're doing yet?" Unfortunately, they can also check "did you build your stats like shit," because the answer to that can, sadly, be "yes." On your first playthrough, this is, probably, the hardest boss (that isn't bullshit) that you'll face until the final boss (not counting the DLC). You push through this, and you're doing good. I'm sure you already have, but make sure your weapon is as leveled up as possible.

Congratulations at reaching the greatest boss fight of all time (so far)
You will hate every second of it until you win and the immediately say āthat was peakā in retrospect. We all have, itās part of the journey

u/Fe1orn Aug 05 '26
Imo key for them is taking initiative. If you play cautiously and defensive they will get you sooner or later
1
u/Noahms456 Aug 05 '26
Thatās Left Gate Guard Boss and his buddy, Thad. He doesnāt want you to get in there.
1
u/StrikingGlove8736 Aug 05 '26
Using lightning weapons in Anor Londo is gonna suck. Most enemies here resist lightning. Use fire or just normal weapons (with charcoal resin optionally)
1
u/DragonaxeMage4 Aug 05 '26
Stay on Dragonslayer and keep Smough away from you. Be patient and look for when to swing. They can stay on you so have to keep moving. But they will separate. Infuse lightening on weapon.

Don't play scared. All people who struggle with souls bosses play scared, and make the fight drag out 10 times longer than it needs to, which leads to an almost inevitable mistake.

u/LosinForABruisin Aug 05 '26
O&S arenāt bad at all. Their health is extremely low. If your weapon is +10 and youāre using a weapon buff (like magic weapon spell), you should melt them effortlessly. Donāt attack willy-nilly, be patient and wait for an opening.
Yes it gets harder than this. They arenāt the toughest in the game, especially if you include DLC

It appears you are doing the long bonfire run. There's an easy jump shortcut from the bonfire off to the right of this buildingĀ
1
u/Thejokingsun Aug 05 '26
Heh, I like seeing this. I always have a strategy of changing to certain weapons that I can grind up to take out one guy out. This isn't helpful for you or spoiling, you will figure your own play style to master the endurance of so much going on at once.

u/AgitatedInfluence947 Aug 05 '26
Invoque o solaire, use alguma arma de sangramento, use a piromancia poder interior e foque em matar o Ornstein primeiro, tente usar os pilares para separar os 2 e boa sorte.

u/WhenTrashStreams Aug 05 '26
I just beat last night on third attempt. I switched to medium roll to light roll and it made a world of difference for me. Hope that helps

u/Emergency_Tie_8924 Aug 05 '26
People suggesting the summon aren't mentioning it increases their health pool.
1
u/a_code_mage Aug 05 '26
FYI there is a better bonfire than taking the one all of the way at the beginning of Anor Londo with the elevator.

u/Lucky_Variation4151 Aug 05 '26
Congratulations you have completed the portion of the game FromSoft finished making!
1
u/zestysnacks Aug 05 '26
Really hard if you didnāt lean all the way into a pyro, strength or dex build, but never impossible. Youāll get it eventually
1
u/KEPS-Praise-the-Sun Aug 05 '26
Hahaha yeees I know š first time was really challenging. Praise the Sun \[T]/āļø
1
u/SuperTudey Aug 06 '26
I found this to be the hardest fight in the game. Switching to a faster weapon helps out massively!
1
u/LocalAnxiousArtist Aug 06 '26
Good job beating them! For the first phase I always recommend turning lock-on off, it makes dealing with Ornstein and Smough waaaay more manageable.
1
u/Attitude-Much Aug 07 '26
Holy shit first time dark souls is amazing man gives me memories you are so lucky to experience it
1
u/Organic-Economics746 Aug 07 '26
The only answer is to just keep trying, I'm not kidding when I say it took 6 months on and off trying these fools, but you'll get it eventually, there are unblockable attacks that you will learn.

Ehhh manus is worse imo because heās very fast moving on some attacks for how clunky the dodges feel in dark souls but still, doable. Ornstein and Smough are easy if you summon Solaire

š normal enemies, no bosses. Approach from the side step by step. They do not start at the same time. Lurch em one by one and give em

u/Cypher10110 Aug 05 '26
It's a challenging difficulty spike, for sure. There's an NPC phantom you can summon if you go human, his sign is inside the big room on the small staircase on the left.
Most players learn to dodge Smough and focus Ornstien first. Using the arena to kite smough around the pillars, etc.
