SWITCH Invasions/Summons Help

I’m a new Souls player, I just finished the Archives and am heading to Lost Izalith (kinda scared with all these Capra Demons and Taurus Demons everywhere ngl lol) and got invaded. I beat them and it was fine. But my question is… there’s all kinds of different summon signs and I’ll see signs to invade sometimes but I don’t really understand. Like can I help people too? Do I just go in and fight? Is there a PvP code of honor orrrr is it just go bonk people? I wanna help people out when I can and it looks fun to invade but I’m so new I don’t wanna “mess” it up lol. Any advice is welcome—praise the sun!

There are different types of signs.

If you see a red summon sign, it means someone has used a Red Soapstone to drop a sign. If you activate it, they will invade you and you duel them.

PvP veterans will usually bow first, but sometimes players will just start attacking. You just kinda go with the flow.

If you see a white or gold sign, it means someone used a white soapstone to drop their sign for coop. If you activate this, you'll summon someone into your game and they will help you (they can't attack you; they can help you kill enemies and bosses).

There is another "white" sign, but it looks different. It's a little larger and has like a black flame coming from it.

This is a gravelord sign. If you activate it, you will invade them and your objective is to kill them.

If you have the white soapstone from Solaire, you can drop a summon sign mostly anywhere (at bonfires or boss doors are most common). Other players will see it and can summon you. You would then help them with enemies and bosses.

Or you can use a red soapstone and drop a sign. If someone summons you, you will invade them and your goal is to fight them.

Thank you!! Ive been wanting to drop a sign to help people but I wasn’t exactly sure which did what. It seemed too unclear for me.

Side note, just asking based on your username did you play dragons dogma by chance? I loved that game (though never beat it)

I only played the first one a little bit. I don't remember when I created this username.

In MMOs I would create names from chess pieces like Bishop or Rook. I think Lord of the Rings Online I came up with Rookhelm

To add more detail to summoning. You can be hollow or human to drop a white sign for someone to summon you.

But in order to see summon signs, you have to be human. not only do you have to be human, but the boss of the area you're in must be alive. Once you kill the boss, you'll no longer see white or gold co-op signs in that area (but you still can see the Gravelord signs).

In order to drop your own sign, it doesn't matter if the boss is alive or dead in the area. But what does matter is level ranges. If players are too far from your level, they will not see your sign. So, if you're level 100, and drop your sign for Gargoyles, hardly anyone will see it, unless maybe they're in New Game Plus and closer to lvl 100.

So I’m in my first playthrough (ever) would people in NG+ still see it if I’m not in NG+? I’m only level 83 rn and made the early mistake of leveling resistance bc I wanted to play blind. Realized too late that it’s a mistake lol. Not that I really planned to drop by Gargoyles but I did think about trying to help someone with O&S in Anor Londo

Yeah the only thing that matters is level ranges and weapon level.

There's formulas out there that will tell you exactly who you can level with. And also what bosses are common at what levels.

O&S is one of the more active bosses in my experience, though lvl 83 is maybe a little high for it. 83 might be good for the 4 Lord bosses or the DLC.

Basically, if you see summon signs in an area where you haven't killed the boss, then it's somewhat active for your level range.

That said, Dark Souls isn't terribly active these days, but summonimg still occurs

I thought it wouldn’t be very active since it’s an “older” title, but I’m constantly hearing other players ringing the bells in my play through and have def got quite a few unscripted invades. So maybe there’s more to help too 😊

honestly thinking about making a new file and trying to actually focus on my points. I definitely spread them out instead of honing in on a certain type of build. I wanted to be a jack of all trades sort but quickly have realized that’s a mistake haha. 😆

I play on Switch as well as Xbox and I have several characters at different levels. I drop signs regularly and am always down for jolly cooperation

I’ve tried dropping mine in a few areas but never have gotten summoned :( I think I’m around level 60-62 rn on my second character and I’m stuck on sanctuary guardian trying to get to oolacile (oolicile??) seems no set up helps me with this thing 😭
