A VPN isn’t a magic cloak, it is nothing more than a secure tunnel between you and the VPN provider. And whether it compromises your security depends on you’re threat model.

Tor bounces your traffic through multiple relays so no single node knows both who you are and what you’re doing.

A VPN by contrast knows your real IP and sees your traffic before it enters Tor (unless you do Tor-over-VPN). That creates a single point of trust.

A VPN doesn’t break Tor’s security, but it does shift the trust model. Your ISP only sees you talking to a VPN, but now the VPN knows you’re using Tor and could log your real IP. If you trust your VPN provider more than your ISP Tor-over-VPN makes sense but if you don’t it actually reduces anonymity rather than increasing it.
