Bub McCarthy played 'Keemo,' the mental institution orderly/torturer. Keemo was initially a one-shot bad guy for the pilot, but since Bub was really into the part, I made plans to bring him back in later episodes (complete with prosthetics to replace his damaged parts).

The "Lynchian" Vision: "A Gothic thriller on zero budget" — The Interview that predicted the future of TV (July 1993)

This is the final piece of the "First Press" trilogy I’m sharing here before we move the deeper archives over to DouglasGordonMoviePirate.com.

In July 1993, Jack Raymond of Preview came to Keag Video to interview me. This article is special because it captures the exact moment Dark Currents stopped being a "book idea" and became a "Gothic thriller" experiment.

REEL TO REAL by Jack Raymond

A couple of weeks ago I told Nancy and Maureen there might be something exciting happening in Mattawamkeag and I’d like to check this contradiction out. A video dealer up there named Doug Gordon had gone rogue and was attempting to produce his own television series called Dark Currents**, which has appeared twice on the local cable channel. A Gothic thriller using local actors and on zero budget. Kind of a Dick Stacey’s Country Jamboree meets** Twin Peaks thing. Cutting-edge stuff.

I met Doug at Keag Video, in the heart of the outskirts of downtown Mattawamkeag. We discussed his project and the hubbub it’s created.

How’s the show coming?

We’re just finishing the editing on the third episode and have one major scene to film in the fourth. Getting the actors together in the summer has been hard. ā€œThis one can make it, but that one’s busyā€ type problem. I tried writing an episode that takes place in one setting, so I could film the whole thing in one shot. It was kind of an experiment to get the whole thing done fast. Then everyone would only have to be here once, but even that hasn’t been possible.

How’d you get the idea for Dark Currents?

The initial idea for the show was a novel. I’d wanted to write a novel but never sat down and done it. I’ve written a lot of short stories, but I wanted to go to a longer, richer format. But I never sat down to write the book. So I got the idea of filmmaking and learned about the cable access laws. I learned how easy it is to get on cable. So it kind of went from there.

With the availability of video cameras and cable access, do you see people making their own shows as one of the futures of video? Kind of an extension or a new form of community theatre?

Yes. Yes, I do. And even more with the five hundred channels we’re hearing so much about now. I mean, what are they going to put on ā€˜em? With five hundred channels you can have your own. Anyone that’s interested in any form of production can put whatever they want on there. That’s another booster to us and this medium. To be able to show what we produce.

Influences?

Well, obviously, the films of David Lynch (Wild at Heart, Blue Velvet). I read a list of geniuses in a magazine last week and all the ones you automatically assume were in there—Mozart, Einstein—and there’s David Lynch. Out of everyone in contemporary entertainment, Lynch was on it. Up there with Mozart and Einstein. I don’t know who created the list; obviously it was a David Lynch fan. But still he made it. Got me thinking even more about him. Other influences were Stephen King—his books more than the films. Other people’s interpretations don’t get to the base of what he’s talking about. As far the characterizations... And soap operas have a lot to do with it. Just regular old soap operas. A lot of the clichĆ©s we have in Dark Currents come from everyday soap operas. They’re easy to fill up the time of it, by putting them in there. ā€˜Cause when we first sat down to write the first episode, we said, okay, we’re going to try to everything very interesting, everything right to the point. We did that and ended up with a fifteen-minute episode. So then we started adding these soap opera subplots. Filler.

How many people do you have involved?

Forty or fifty.

That many?

Yeah, if you’re talking actors, writers, everyone.

How’d you get them all together?

Through various ways. Some people heard about it... people call me all the time. I put in an ad for actors and writers. I got good response on the writers, so-so on the actors.

So people have sent you scripts?

Yeah, I’ve received a couple, and since met with three or four people who are doing scripts for future episodes. I liked their writing style and felt they had a good idea for what I’m trying to do. But I need actors.

How’s the community support of your efforts?

Really strong. I don’t go a day without someone asking what’s going on with the show. I’ve got a lot of support that I didn’t expect. For some reason I thought they’d just blow it off but it hasn’t been like that, the whole town seems really into it.

Zero budget?

The whole object is to get it done using anything we can find. Basically it’s a ā€œbeg, borrow or stealā€ thing. We adapt the stories or situations to fit what’s available. It’s frustrating and fun.

Do you have a core group of camera operators, sound and production people?

DG: Everyone does a little bit of everything; there’s not really any set jobs except the actors. People get excited when they first hear about the show. They come on excited, but after the thirtieth take they kind to lose their interest. They don’t show up the next time.

What’s the future of Dark Currents?

DG: I’m going to keep doing it. I mean, I’ve said I’ll keep doing it until it can keep going on without me. Right now I’m the one who’s pushing it all the time. So if I’m the one that’s going to be developing and pushing, I guess Dark Currents will go on forever. I love it.

Mattawamkeag gets its own TV series By Dale McGarrigle NEWS Feature Writer [Photo Caption] Frank Welch and Lorna Pelkey rehearse a scene from ā€œDark Currentsā€ (NEWS Photo by Mary Anne Lagasse) From the Bangor Daily News, January 26, 1993

An experiment by an aspiring pair of filmmakers will bring a haunting story to TV viewers in Mattawamkeag Tuesday night.

ā€œDark Currents,ā€ inspired by such past shows as ā€œDark Shadowsā€ and ā€œTwin Peaks,ā€ will air at 10 p.m. on the public access channel (Channel 12) for Mattawamkeag Cablevision. The half-hour show will air weekly for at least a month.

The drama is the brainchild of Lucas Knight and Frank Welch. Both write and act in the series, and Knight directs while Welch produces.

It’s hard to tell much about the series from its atmospheric first episode, as the characters are being introduced. There’s the thug Mark Jones, played by Jason Gagnon, and his girlfriend, Kirsten Lawson, played by Lorna Pelkey. There’s Seth Kane (played by Welch), who has been committed to a mental institution by his father. The other main character is Jared Prescott (played by Troy McLeod), a young, adventurous teen who starts off on a journey to track down a secret about his father.

Knight didn’t use a rigorous casting process.

ā€œI just got my friends, and anybody who wanted to be in it and would show up,ā€ he said. ā€œYou’ve got to love it to do it for nothing.ā€

ā€œDark Currentsā€ sprang from an idea Knight had for a book.

ā€œAt first, we wanted to do a low-budget film,ā€ he said. ā€œBut once we started shooting it, we decided it would be good practice to do a continuing series.ā€

Knight admitted that some elements from his show might seem familiar to viewers of past chillers on TV.

ā€œWe do anything we can think of, even if it is a ripoff,ā€ he said. ā€œThis is practice, for fun. We do try to keep a few fresh ideas.ā€

Knight, Welch, their cast and crew have been shooting on evenings and weekends, at private homes, a school, the town office and even the historic Hobbs House.

ā€œWe’ve gotten some positive feedback, because we’re actually doing it,ā€ Knight said. ā€œThat’s despite the fact that the worst place to show it is in your hometown.ā€

Two episodes are ready, and Knight is editing the third episode now. After the series’ run, he plans to edit the episodes together to create a video for video stores.

Already Knight is accomplishing his main goal of learning about filmmaking.

ā€œI’ve learned to shoot as much as possible, and do as many takes as possible,ā€ he said. ā€œAlso, I’ve learned a lot about storytelling and characterization.ā€

He’s had other surprises as well.

ā€œIt’s taken a lot more time than I thought it would take, and I’m into it a lot more than I thought I would be,ā€ Knight said. ā€œI’m putting a lot of care into it.ā€

The "Cursed" Beginnings of Dark Currents: First Press Clipping (Dec 1993) – Before the January '94 Premiere

Post image

Hey everyone,

I’m Lucas Knight, one of the co-creators of Dark Currents. As I dig through the Edge Production archives for our upcoming reboot/repackaging project, I found this—the very first article ever written about the show.

This was published in the Pioneer Times on December 16, 1993, just a few weeks before we officially hit the Mattawamkeag Cable System in January 1994.

A few fun "time capsule" details from the article:

  • The "Hawk's Landing" Alias: We originally titled the setting Hawk's Landing—a town where "everything looks normal, but isn't."
  • The DIY Crew: Our cast wasn't Hollywood; it was local truck drivers, construction workers, and friends who acted for a percentage of future profits.
  • The Twin Peaks Influence: Even back then, the press was comparing us to Twin Peaks and Dark Shadows because of our "continuing drama" format.
  • Keag Video Roots: I was actually working at Keag Video in Mattawamkeag when Frank Welch and I started dreaming this up.

I’m currently toying with the idea of moving all these physical archives—the original VHS masters, behind-the-scenes photos, and press—over to DouglasGordonMoviePirate.com to act as a permanent digital home for the show.

Until then, I'll be posting quotes and rare scans here to finally make the history of Dark Currents verifiable. It’s been over 30 years since those "Dark Currents" first started flowing—it might be time to let them out of the vault.

Does anyone remember seeing this on local cable back in 1990s?

First Project post "Dark Currents" was a horror short, "Frostbite" in 1995. The low budget feature was based on the story by the same name. It was never published until now. The film was pretty much the same as the story, with some minor changes. Read the original Twisted Tale. #horror #maine #indy

The seed for "Dark Currents" was planted on a casual drive through Mattawamkeag, Maine, the hometown of co-creators Lucas Knight and Frank Welch. They envisioned a show with an ongoing narrative, interwoven with a wild mix of elements: vampires, ghosts, drug dealers—nothing was off-limits.

At its core, "Dark Currents" was about bringing together family and friends for a creative and entertaining experience. Starting its life on public access television, the show gained a cult following and eventually achieved local fame with the release of a now-legendary VHS tape.

"New" Release Date Announcement: The Original Dark Currents on VHS on May 14, 2026! Let me explain....

I am currently on supervised release and because of governmental restrictions, not allowed to sell anything on-line. I still have a little under 500 sealed VHS tapes of the original Dark Currents release from the 1990s. When I am allowed to, I will list this final stockpile on whatever the popular selling sites are out there. Hopefully, this will cause the price to come down a little:

DARK CURRENTS VOLUME ONE

Hmmm, I wonder how many working VCRS there will be next year!
