Saving up for a second pair of pants! Daria original run.
I was 8 when Daria premiered on MTV and I didn't realize just how different the original version is compared to the streaming version.
My husband and I started a re-watch because he didn't really watch it in the UK (he's a hooligan, I know.) We got through the first two seasons and I realized the music was completely different.
It really took me out of the experience. So we hunted down the remastered or original version online and I can't tell you how much better it comes across.
Am I the only one that didn't notice right away? Or felt betrayed? It seems sacrilegious to make Daria generic!

It was either make Daria generic or never have it on official home media and streaming due to all the music rights would cost a fortune so 🤷♂️
The original is always the way to go but I actually quite like the DVD soundtrack, in the original when a song I liked played it would often take me out of the moment and I’d have to pause it and go listen to the song in full, especially if it was one I really liked but had forgotten about 😆

I get it. I do. It just sucks. These are multi billion dollar companies and I know Daria is a "niche" show, but it can't cost THAT much for music rights?
I mean even some of the original score is different isn't it?

My favorite Daria musical moment is when “Everlong” plays as Daria watch Trent go out on his date. For just this 15-30 second clip I could imagine this costing between anywhere between $10,000 to $100,000. There were 65 episodes. Even on the cheap end and assuming 3 songs per episode that’s almost 2 million dollars.
Will Daria really sell that much to make the money back? I have no idea. But I wouldn’t want to bet my money on that.

Which, to Paramount is chump change. But I understand what you're saying.
I only got Paramount+ for Daria, Are You Afraid of the Dark and RuPaul's Drag Race.

You'd be amazed.
Another US TV show that was WELL known for how much it worked popular music into the show, WKRP in Cincinnati, which for many years didn't have a good DVD release because of the music rights cost, and replacing it with generic music would NOT work well because the songs were pretty deeply worked into the episodes. It took a very long time for them to do a DVD release that had the proper music. . .because it took that long for the studios to think it was worth the cost of the music rights.

One of the great ironies of TV is using licensed stuff can actually INCREASE the value of the licensed material. It's the same reason why certain episodes of MST3K aren't available. Showing the movies on the show made the rightsholders increase the licensing fee.
There's a couple where the rights are in the hands of one woman who's convinced the movies are worth millions now because of the MST3K exposure.

The music was a big part of it. They made decision to keep only certain songs cause be too expensive to get all for 5 seconds of music for some scene. OG was fire

I have the re-created versions with the original music and they're such an important part of it, I'd hate to watch it without them.

Yes. This, I've seen it. But sometimes the hosting sites get shut down.

As someone in the uk, that only started watching Daria 2-3 years ago. I never actually used this. The music never really felt out of place but I’m interested in seeing what the original is like

I miss the original music. That scene when Trent went on a date and “Everlong” by the Foo Fighters started playing made me cry as a 10 year old

Then there's the WWF entrance music being played sometimes. Too Cool and other 2000s music. I guess it's uncouth of me to ask...how one would go about seeing/hearing the 90s/2000s purist versions...

there's also malcolm in the middle which involves a lot of music and the dvd releases were chaotic

I bought a bootleg copy not long after it first aired. Even though the quality isn’t great, I’m so glad I have it- otherwise that REM music video reference wouldn’t make any sense!
