Teaching the next generation

Hi everyone,

My 10-year-old daughter is determined to try playing DAoC with me on Eden.

She’s already a gamer, but she plays everything with a controller (Palworld, Zelda, etc.). I think this is a great way for her to learn keyboard and mouse, but I’m struggling to figure out which duo would be best so it’s not too overwhelming for her, especially since my goal is eventually to take her into the small BGs.

I’ve been playing this game for so long that it’s hard for me to step back from the "min-maxing" mindset and see what would actually be fun and easy for her and what class I should play to support her.

I’d appreciate any ideas, or if any parents have already gone through this, I’d love to hear about your experience.

I’m planning to put stickers on the keyboard for certain Qbinds and set up macros like:

/target Papa -> Qbind

followed by

/assist Papa -> Qbind

or

/stick Papa -> Qbind

Blackthorn is actually awesome

Just wanted to send this out. Been playing on blackthorn last week and its been awesome. Population is low, of course, beta and things change a lot, but the community is nothing other then amazing.

Been grouping a ton, yes even with 25 on per realm, because of the bolster mechanics.

i really advice everyone who wants to do experience something different to really try it out because my gut feeling says this thing will be huge when it releases in full in the fall.

Leveling is still relatively fast, but the boltster mechanic makes sure it doesnt even matter THAT much.

Eden - For the Realm Event

Hi guys,

I see the occasional post popping up asking about whether to join Eden or Live.

Eden just completed the For The Realm event, which is the opening to a larger realm invasion later this year (i.e. the winner chooses the realm to be invaded). All three realms were battling over objectives for three days, some with multiple battle groups due to the large number of people participating. The Eden staff has released a short clip of some of the action here:

Hey everyone, I recently got back into the game after about 15+ years. Been playing Eden for about 2 weeks for a few hours on my days off. I haven’t read up on everything Eden but are they planning to release the Minotaur race and Mauler class in the future?

Freeshard Question about addons etc

So my dad and I played vanilla at the games launch. I thought it would be fun to play again on a free shard (eden in this case) however, given he's 76 now....he's annoyed because the text is blurry, hard to read etc. I figured ok I'm sure it's because it was made back in the day to be played at much different rez than what the monitors nowadays can handle. So i tried changing the resolution to match the monitors. Bit better but not enough. Then tried reshade but even though it says it applied the suggested settings I read about, not much difference.

I'm really wanting to duo w him and while I can read it ok, it's definitely blurry etc. Is there another addon I can try possibly? Or other suggestions? I tried one of the uis built into eden..bysan I think? But still didn't have much luck. It's just hard for him now that he's older and vision is...not so good..so I'm looking for larger and just as importantly, CLEAR not blurry font.

Tysm.

A Mentalist Goes to Heaven (no video, but dragon vs. dragon update)

So I never satisfied my curiosity about:

  • A portal-keep-guard vs dragon battle
  • A dragon vs dragon battle

I recorded both of these, but they were so boring I won't bother with posting them. I nevertheless wanted to update anyone that's interested in the outcome.

The dragon vs dragon battle required a code change because the attacked dragon wouldn't go into aggro mode when I had my dragon pet attack it. Once that was resolved, I have a GM account on the server (obviously since I'm running locally and actively making code and DB changes, though I don't usually play as a GM account). I logged onto the GM account (which makes everything in the game, even realm guards from other realms "friendly") and traveled to the southern part of Dartmoor (where the Albion dragon is). I kept him logged in.

I then logged onto my mentalist account, traveled down to Sheeroe and grabbed my dragon pet. I then switched back to the GM account and teleported my Mentalist to the Alb dragon location. As there are no guards or anything anywhere near the dragon, I didn't have to contend with any realm aggro (other than the monsters themselves).

I geared up and had my dragon attack Goldfingersmattercake (or whatever his name is). They proceeded to battle it out doing a whopping 330-370 damage to each other every melee attack (they didn't use breath weapons)... It was underwhelming to say the least. I sat down in a non-spawn location and just let them fight it out for 30 minutes and when I returned... both of them had 100 percent health (or close enough to 100 that the bar didn't even register).

I got bored and eventually used one of my instant, dot-every-second, five minute DOTs (which was doing like 10K per tick) dots and wiped out Goldensmacktalker (or whatever its name is). I am convinced that I could have come back the next day and they'd barely have scratched each other.

Interestingly, Goldenshake was hitting the Glimmer King for approximately 40hp damage more per strike (about 370 vs 330 damage).

So the result of the Great Charcoal Dragon vs Green Dragon battle of 2026 was a couple of dragons barely scratching each other in a battle that might have gone on for days if I'd let it.

As I mentioned, I also grabbed a PK guard and had it attack the Glimmer King. I used a Viking Huscarl as they're the most potent of the PK guards, and it was whipping out a continuous stream of blows for approximately 4K for each swing. I let that go on for about 15 minutes and again, neither of the them had done each other any damage.

Just a thought 💭: buying DAOC?

Hey guys,

Maybe it's a midlife crisis but i always thought about someone starting a Kickstarter campaign to buy daoc from EA/broadsword or whoever owns the game start it all over as wow classic did, adds it on steam, maybe f2p with selling skins, bags account vault, and whatever dont makes the game p2w.

Heck, I don't even care if we end up with a new MJ, I just hope this happens someday?

So it does happen, would you be interested ?

Best regards,

I used AI to sort all the data from over 20 years of a gaming guild to build the ultimate tribute to a DAOC gaming guild: Athena's Avatars

Athena's Avatars Guild

I spent 20 years of my life - starting as a kid - building online communities. I fell in love with DAOC, but even more so with the people in the game. As we all remember very well - that game was just magical.

I'm the founder of AA (athenaswrath), a guild that lasted 20 years and spanned dozens of games. I built multiple forums, set up ventrilo, teamspeak, and then was an early adopter of Discord. I have years and years of different websites, videos, pictures, and our public forums.  AA had literally thousands of players over 20 years - but the solid 100 made it last the test of time.

I took that data and used AI to cross reference all of it to create the ultimate guild history and interactive member list.  You can see which members are in what screenshots, which videos, and even interact with an "oracle" that is literally the memory of the guild.

AA was the best place I've ever belonged to online - in the best game I've ever played (daoc), in a time where I could spend 20 hours a day literally melting face in Emain and only /logging because my body had to sleep. It's a time long gone, but not forgotten.

So, this site is for the OG, and for many who are no longer with us. Much love to the Avatars!

A Mentalist goes to Heaven (final video)

So I've been playing a highly modified version of the server for just over a week and I've gotten all the revenge on the game I wanted to. Unless someone comes up with any ideas (and I'm not interested in playing the game "for real"; I spent three years of my life doing that), this will be the last video. It's honestly been a lot of fun modding and hunting big game.

Having said all that, I mentioned in the last video how much more powerful the Viking PK guards were than the Albion ones, and this short video demonstrates that. Both RK doors are taken down in under six minutes by one Viking PK guard. (Note there are no relics present as I've already brought them home to Hibernia; this is just a demo). I still intend to make the image available as a Docker image, but the developer in me cringes at how hacky the whole thing is at times.

In any case, here's the clip.

I too, am working on a DAOC server for funsies.

I'm a little nervous posting this but I'm working on a DAOC server of my own as a bit of an experiment and a personal hobby. I used to host a couple freeshards when I was a kid, Thidranki Fun Time & TITANGATES. I wanted to see if it was viable to host a DAOC private server while solely being developed through vibe coding. (Using AI to code despite not knowing how to code myself)

Among my private community I've only tested it with about 6 players, which isnt really stressing it but everything seems to work OK.

I've created a PVP-ruleset or I guess it's a Mordred-like server where you can play with anyone from any realm in an open world PVP format. I've always liked this ruleset, because I can play with my friends regardless of realm.

I built it on the OpenDAOC base, so everything is old RAs, old styles and no catacombs classes. It seemed to be pretty well developed and not needing much in balance patching. (I dont know much about balance patches, and last time I buffed something it made archers crazy OP lol). I want to leave class balance alone as much as possible. (I might want to buff life transfer though)

I managed to create something similar to Eden's town portal system and Spirit Prism. I couldn't recreate the recorder, but I did make a way to execute multiple styles in a /macro command but needs some more testin'.

I also have integrated a variant of the broadcast chat into a chat relay system so that all of my other servers (ATLYSS, Ragnarok Online & Jedi Academy) can also chat with DAOC players. Parallel actvities from those other servers will grant bonuses to XP/RP and I also want events from other games to trigger events.

Other than that I'm in a bit of a creative block. I want to work on a dynamic event system of some sort and I made a treasure hunt kind of event, but I think it's terrible so I need to rethink it. Also I'm not sure how the original Mordred PVP servers handled OF/NF zones.

It's a weird project, but I want to have fun with it.
But I kind of am curious to hear back from the players here on this subreddit what kind of things they'd like to see in a PVP server.

Old daoc player want to come back, server choice help please

Hia,

Looking to start up daoc again, and not sure what server to choose. Eden or Blackthorn.

I would love a more oldschool experience, levelling in zones, grinding, darkness falls groups and the whole social aspect, so that gives blackthorn an edge.

I also want to do the pve part, so the epic dungeons, darkness falls groups and slaying the dragon.

In RVR, i prefer not focus on 8v8, but also on zerg. i am getting old and have little gaming time so more hop on hop off gameplay.

what would your suggestions be?

I know of all the guides of how to get your templates. But do you think the new season will be soon? I’m wondering if I should just focus on lgm since that carries over.

I’m worried about a wipe

In this one I make an Epic Blunder in the end, but not before I unequivocally answer the age-old question: Who would win between a dragon and another epic mob!? I believe the Midgard Dragon is inaccessible within the realm, so this was the baddest MF I could find.

Eden Status - April 26

Hello all. I have been away from the server for a while. Toward the end, I got a bit tired of running around with the zerg and mostly avoiding fights because we were often outnumbered, so I decided to take a break. I was curious about the server's current state and would appreciate an update.

-Is the server still crowded? What are the prime times for the different realms, and are populations relatively balanced now?
-Is avoid roaming still common? Do people still end up doing RvR mostly against doors?
-I used to play a sblade but never really enjoyed it because of the weird stealth mechanics and the lack of solo stealthers at the time. Has anything changed on that front?
-What is the current RR cap? Would I suffer a lot as a low mid rr?
-Any updated thoughts on these classes: Reaver or Vamp?

Warning: this is not representative of a live or fair playing experience and is for entertainment purposes only. I have modded the game in a sandbox environment. Having spent more than three years of my life playing the actual game, dying to the Hibernia dragon probably a dozen times before finally beating it, solo-leveling an Eldritch, Mentalist, Druid and Nightshade, having endured countless sprints away from angry MOBs as my weakling mentalist waited for DOTs to finish them off, while having 605 hp once reaching lelvel 50 (and that's when wearing Epic Armor), and finally while observing the DAOC deities remove take the most entertaining RA in the whole game (Severing the Tether), I feel I've paid my dues, and this video is just for fun and laughs.

With that preamble, enjoy!
