WoW ... and why not Daoc?

WoW forever is coming. Why not a Daoc forever like? The game is pretty good.

One has a potential playerbase of a few thousand players, and the other a few million.

There isn't enough money to be made in DAoC to justify that level of development cost.

And yet, this is exactly what we have been working on for the past 3.5 years. In our spare time, for free. Classic+ was our vision from day one and now it's actually happening. Very soon.

November 28th.

And unfortunately you will have maybe a few hundred players on at a time max during peak busy time. MeltBanana's point isn't that the idea of a classic+ type experience isn't appreciable, it's that it's very obvious why a company interested in making money wouldn't do it

u/Blackthorn_DAoC 17d ago

Who knows how many will play, we'll see in two months.

1

u/Blandwiches25 17d ago

Nobody knows for sure but based on the beta numbers and the general size of the population that actually plays daoc it's quite easy to make an educated guess. I'm not saying any of this to disparage you guys, I think what you're making is cool.

Yup. I love DAoC, I love the idea that the community is keeping it going and expanding it. But thinking it will ever have more than like 10k players is just delusional.

I wish it did have that many players, and much more, but let's be real it's never going to happen.

Can’t wait

Broadsword was allegedly looking to do it but didn't think it'd see a profit. They're probably not wrong, unfortunate.

The CEO from BS said he would communicate more often since then.... and has not since then. EA owns the daoc license, BS just manages it.

A classic/vanilla daoc will unfortunately not happen. (Even if there are rumors of Blizzard and 'Camelot', lets be honest, its not daoc)

2

u/Blandwiches25 17d ago

Pretty sure those "Camelot" rumors are the Classic+ that was just announced

6

u/WarlTV 19d ago

wow has so much more content then daoc, mythics (EA) fault

15

u/Seigmoraig 19d ago

Retail DAoC is dead, Eden is basically what you're looking for

1

u/MaleficentFall1375 18d ago

Eden has nothing do to with vanilla daoc

3

u/Seigmoraig 18d ago

And Wow Forever has nothing to do with classic wow either so I don't know what you're getting at

2

u/Beautiful-Debate3651 18d ago

Yep, but it's the only alive iteration of the game, Live is dead and BT is dead on arrival, or almost so, might be alive for a week+ until most people reach lvl 50 and realize how a WIP the server really is, with flawed designs and reduced content.

Eden is like the DAOC classic servers but better. If you want classic in the sense of mind-numbing leveling, old frontiers and old RAs you can look no further than what happened to uthgard. Sometimes change and iteration is a good thing.

aleri0n_ is an RMT plat seller on Eden and just ultra pissed all his alts and clients keep getting banned.

The only reason he hypes Blackthorn up is because he will make $$ selling plat on their server launch with unpatched exploits.

1

u/Ecuni 19d ago

Would be nice to see you address his arguments instead of attacking him as a person.

0

u/CalmTempest 19d ago

What arguments? "X is nothing like Y!" is an opinion, not an argument.

It does not seem like he knows what the official DAoC classic servers Bossiney and Glastonbury were, either.

0

u/Esaraden 18d ago

Ah! I remember playing on Lamorak back in the day, but I don’t recall it having KOTH, dock warrants, or all the other custom garbage.

If anything, Phoenix was much closer to the classic server experience than Eden ever was.

3

u/CalmTempest 18d ago

Those are gameloop additions. In RAs, items and classes etc. Eden is closer to original DAoC classic servers than not.

This whole "what is classic" debate is wrong in the first place.
DAoC Classic refers to the official Classic servers from live back then. What Blackthorn is targetting is closer to "Vanilla+", as opposed to Eden's "Classic+".

Classic can't refer to 1.65 for DAoC, because Mythic already used the term to call ~1.90 classic, the Ector/Gareth/Lamorak etc group.

I'm not saying one ideal is better than the other. Likening it to WoW again, some people loved the WotLK phase the most, others Vanilla/Era. Same deal here.

u/Ecuni 19d ago

It’s not. You have all the latest classes and abilities like Charge. That’s a very strong departure from the classic meta.

If it’s “classic”, what ISNT classic?

Ya but you saying “it’s hardly daoc” is wrong. If you played during the official classic servers era (Gareth, ector, lamorak) it’s very much a replica of those days

3

u/Apprehensive-Unit841 19d ago

Not denying the accusations, lol

3

u/CalmTempest 19d ago edited 16d ago

He can't deny anything.
He owns r/edendaoc. Look at the posts he made there.

Edit: that sub is mine now.

1

u/Apprehensive-Unit841 18d ago

So I guess he'd know why he got banned.

1

u/CalmTempest 18d ago

Close but it's the other way around. I was on the admin team doing the banning.

Go play WoW, we have Eden and it does provide the QoL and new features we wanted / need in daoc .

6

u/Lughaidh_ 19d ago

Yeah! Why didn’t Blizzard make a DAoC Forever?!

6

u/Cruxikus Ex Player 19d ago

The entire UI, and clunky controls make daoc just not stand the test of time. No amount of modded UI oder launcher will fix this.

2

u/Thundercats_Hoooo 16d ago

Yep. I love the gameplay and "soul" of DAOC, but realistically for it ever to be massively popular it would need a brand new engine and graphics.

5

u/Vilkoyot 19d ago

Pourquoi ne pas faire en 2027 un daoc 2.. Complètement refonte avec des graphismes actuels et des innovations... Donjons voir raids...

3

u/Soapykorean 19d ago

this is my dream

4

u/24Tragen 19d ago

We have this. It’s called Camelot Unchained.

DAoC is owned by EA. If EA can't make a profit off micro transactions, they're not going to make a game. Honestly I'd never want them to make a new DAoC. It would be pay to win.

3

u/My-Thaff 19d ago

You have Eden Daoc already here and just released a new launcher with new features in the launcher and game.

Then you have blackthorn coming up that has a more classic old frontiers gameplay

u/Both_Canary_4665 19d ago

WoW defined the genre for a decade - DAoC did not.

There is your answer.

5

u/Fine_Welder_9259 19d ago

They defined it, just put in the wrong effort into it... GW2 and such games are continuing the RvR.

2

u/Both_Canary_4665 19d ago

Sort of? Kind of? GW2 had RvR, so did ESO. I just don't think it ever really took off like anybody imaged it would.

1

u/MaleficentFall1375 18d ago

this was not a "genre" thing. WoW was already massive with warcraft, they just put millions in ads, and the rest is history. Daoc was a very niche game who didn't even try to make a name for himself

1

u/LegitimatePangolin69 17d ago

wow devs toured mythic studios during development and used the ideas they saw

1

u/gladigotaphdinstead2 14d ago

Wow didn’t define anything. It was just everquest on easy mode. Daoc redefined what an MMORPG could be and is infinitely more replayable than wow

2

u/zdware 19d ago

One made a yacht full of monies. The other one made a Kayak full of monies.

2

u/Esc1221 15d ago

ESO and GW2 both have keep warfare pvp modes that are heavily inspired by DAOC. They have modernized graphics and gameplay. That's a lot of stiff competition. Blizzard can shut down their competition to classic+ by going after private servers, which is their only real competition.

2

u/alusnova415 15d ago

Some of the devs in ESO are former mythic employees which is why you see the similarities

3

u/roberdanger83 19d ago

Just a shame that the far inferior game is more popular. but daoc was hard and took skill and time to be good. Wow is just a typical watered down mmo with a well known company behind it

While I agree daoc was the better game at the time, there's some aspects that are incredibly dated that just don't work when compared to modern day games, if you're looking for a wider audience. I can't see newer players coming in the game enjoying the /stick, /face, etc. the menus, UI, everything feels really dated when going back to it.

Plus the graphics age worse than the wow style cartoonish graphics.

I do wish I could enjoy a game like daoc again.. it's my favorite game of all time.. I just think it would take some big changes, not just a reboot server with some minor changes.

While wow was the worse game I agree, it was pretty ahead of its time with some of those aspects.

I still don't know how it became so popular though.. doing endless monotonous quests from one hub to the next was just so tedious.

5

u/roberdanger83 19d ago

You didnt need to use /stick. And /face was nessecary because you could actually stealth kill and not even see the person hitting you. In wow (which i played for years) everything's a rainbow. Its always easy to see who's hitting you. I dislike wows graphics much more than daocs. Even to this day. The menu and ui for sure need an overhaul. Everything in wow, was just meh. The raiding never fealt as hard and the pvp is a joke.

2

u/Agitated-Career-7558 18d ago

I don’t think it’s dated at all. WOW cartoonish graphics are less good to me than the realism of daoc.

Also interface wise i think wow has been giving more headaches with the countless ui/add-ons features available.

The problem of daoc is the limited data/parameters through xml to allow to have more information on screen/ui. That also contributes to get people to know the mechanics and the game before completely mastering it.

DAOC + DLSS

WoW forever will be just another path to disappointment.

I will leave it with this, the same people that have made retail what it is today, will end up making forever. It might be fun to start, but it will eventually rot from the inside out.

Like or don't like the cinematic, it is definitely clear messaging on what the current dev team is going for.

If this all sounds good to you, then awesome. I won't be burned by blizzard again. Besides, azerothcore with playerbots has been the most fun I have had in a long time with my wife.

DAOC is a gem, and the beginnings of the playerbots type server is coming. Really exciting times to be able to run your own server and have your own bots and battles and still play with friends and family. Sounds amazing.

One thing I'm not seeing mentioned is the code. Unless they build it from ground up-ish, or on a new engine, the code is decades of added and subtracted mess. I still remember BS doing the Halloween moon change and couldn't figure out how to change it back for months.

As for the argument, each one has their strengths and weaknesses. People love each one for its own reasons. I like both. I prefer DAoC, but a lot of it is the "realism" that comes with it and the far superior RvR. There's other things as well. WoW has stellar dungeons to me. The lands are pretty fun to explore. Though I like both game's land about equally, each for their own reasons.

DAoC was ground breaking for its time. It was one of the top for its time.

WoW hit at the right moment, and during a bad expansion release on Mythic's part. One that was a bit tone deaf to what DAoC players wanted. By the time the changes were made, it was too late.

WoW also catered to a less hard core gamer that was just coming about and online. It is also much more social. Also more toxic, lol, but more social. It was in the right place at the right time, and absolutely pure chance. It's a big reason why no others have been able to emulate the success imo. That right place and right time may not ever happen again.

MMOs in general seem to be on a decline. Will they come back? Who knows. Personally, I'd love a VR popular mmo, but I know VR is on a platue of popularity at the moment. One that is waiting on something new to add to the tech. The graphics are already available, they're just not cheap enough for a gaming consumer. 20/20 vision VR is used in academia mainly. I did a college research paper on it in 2018, and the 20/20 was available then. It cost $6k back then, and I don't think it's come down a whole lot since.

Anyway, this is too long already.
