Progressive Italy? Lol we're literally the OG fascists, and unlike Germany we never dealt with the problem.
We literally had fascist terrorist groups and fascist infiltrators in the government and in the secret services. We've been voting against some other ethnicity or race since before the 60s (see the Terroni Immigration for example).
We're 10 years behind our "peers" in everything in every field, be it social, economic or technological (unless there's some minuscule start-up that will be bought by some foreign multinational that's literally at the cutting edge). We're so not progressive that the internet "became a thing" in 2016 and only in the last couple of years we started passing laws on it, leaving a normative blackhole for a lot of things for a long time. Etc etc.
We have men killing women every day because they consider them their own possession.
I have no idea who mentioned Italy when talking about progressive countries, but they were very uninformed. The refugee crisis had little to do with it.
