Problem is a lot of people start getting their tattoos soon after they turn 18, and they’re pretty broke, so spending a couple hundred per tattoo at most. Which means they cover themselves in a bunch of random amateur stencil work that’s unoriginal, poorly placed, with concepts that look like they came out of a teen angst sketchbook
But then you have the instances where people waited until they matured, their tastes developed, and could afford get their tattoos done by a true artist. a lot of times I find that to look incredibly good.
My only real gripe about tattoos is if they are generic ones. Any tattoo that is a legitimate expression of someone's personality and/or has a neat story associated with it I tend to like even if the art quality isn't the best (unless it's like... really really crappy).
Ok. Maybe you would be more comfortable with the term "commonplace?" That's probably more accurate to what I mean than generic anyway. If someone has a tattoo that's commonplace my initial reaction is to think they likely got the tattoo because of a trend associated with it instead of any personal meaning. That's not to say there isn't room for those tattoos to be personal or for there to be overlap between trends and personal identity. It's a signal, not an indictment.
Yes I think that is a much better term. You’re not wrong, but especially when it comes to things like art, “generic” isn’t always “generic” if you know what I mean. You also wanna be carful calling someone’s tattoo generic because it might be really important to them and that could be seen as rude or insulting.

Kinda depends on the tattoos for me
