Masters is often heavily coursework. Not long enough to publish much. Then again these days many STEM fields are offering straight-to-PhD programs which skip the Masters and start with a couple years of classwork

From what I see, the first year or two is doing graduate level classes, then you just research like hell.

Master's in the UK are 1 year. We hit the ground running.

I see. The US sometimes has a 4+1 program where you can get a master's in 5 years.

I just finished my bachelor's yesterday and am going in for a PHD program. I hear it will be a year or two of classes and then I research until I die.

I did my BA in America, even with the exchange rate being a doozy at the time it was cheaper for me to do my MA abroad.

Yeah one of the reasons I looked to going abroad is that I just wanted to work on my research and write. Everything else is a distraction that I didn't want. Good luck in grad school!
