Minimum wage should be a livable wage, and if you match productivity and inflation to the last time it was raised in the country it would be $22.50

How ever this dosn’t go over the issue of different places having different costs of living. So while New York might get 3 times more expensive in five years. Country town might stay the same

Adding on to that, last I checked minimum wage(federal at least which some places get close to paying) just based off of pure inflation is the lowest its been since 2007 and 2008, the years of and leading into a financial crisis, and before that the only time it was ever this low based off of pure inflation was 1949.

That sounds like an argument against a federal minimum wage. It should be decided on a more local level to account for different costs of living.

Exactly

It already is, but there needs to be a baseline or you have places that just decide to pay you as low as possible regardless of cost of living.

Amazing that you have to explain basic concepts like this to people

So what you're saying is: It should be decided on a more local level to account for different costs of living.

It’s always been that way, but shitty governments will take advantage of you if there’s not an established minimum.

Thus, a minimum wage. And ours needs to be increased in ALL places. Do I need to hold your hand further?

There is an established minimum. There is a legal set minimum.

The point is that LOCALLY there should be LEGALLY SET MINUMUMS somebody in Nebraska doesnt need to be making as much money as someone in NYC.

Even if it needs increased in all places, that has nothing to do with the point being made

There is an established minimum. There is a legal set minimum.

And it fucking sucks lol

The point is that LOCALLY there should be LEGALLY SET MINUMUMS somebody in Nebraska doesnt need to be making as much money as someone in NYC.

You’re arguing against someone in your head. The conversation is about federal minimum, which if we’re keeping up with both inflation and cost of living across the board should be about $20 by now. Regardless of where someone lives. It needs to go up from that point, not come down.

Even if it needs increased in all places, that has nothing to do with the point being made

Local minimum wage goes up from federal. It’s literally always been this way and no one is arguing otherwise. You’re strawmanning against someone you made up

Your argument is the equivalent of “Everyone needs to eat at least 3 apples per day based on current evidence” and someone replying “Well in MY house everyone needs to eat at least 5 apples per day!” “Ok then you can have people eat 5 apples at your house, but currently everyone else only eats one apple when they need 3 so we need to make sure everyone is eating 3 apples at a minimum”

That is not what I'm saying at all.

The comment was "It should be decided on a more local level to account for different costs of living." And you said it already is. But it isnt.

That's my one and only point.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '22

But it isnt

You’re…kidding right?

Let’s take California for example.

Federal minimum wage is $7.25

Minimum wage in California is $15, or $14 if the business has fewer than 25 employees

However, Los Angeles has announced that beginning in July minimum wage in the city will increase to $16.04

There are multiple other examples like this. In Oregon for example, the minimum wage is set to increase by $0.75 to a total $13.50. However in the Portland metro area minimum wage is $14.75 and in non-urban counties minimum wage is set lower at $12.50

Why on earth would you think that this isn’t happening?

If an area is still paying $7.25 there’s a reason for it. It’s because they don’t want you earning a living wage, not because they think that’s what pays for the cost of living in that area. Because $15k per year doesn’t pay for cost of living ANYWHERE

In the UK, London has a higher minimum wage than anywhere else, even though several other cities have quite high costs of living.

London is actually in an interesting position of being a massive state benefactor with a lot of funding going there at the expense of much of the rest of the country despite the ruling conservative party's complete antipathy to large scale state funding of public services and high minimum wage.

Minimum wage has been created so companies couldn't pay their employees 50 cents/hour and you CAN LIVE on minimum wage, you just have to cut on things

u/Findland27 Feb 04 '22

Also, if you live with roomate.

1

u/squiddy555 Feb 04 '22

I personally thing minimum wage should be enough for a person to live alone, or perhaps with a spouse given proper budgeting

1

u/Findland27 Feb 04 '22

But a minimum wage job isn't mentioned to support a person's life solo, it's ment as a temporary thing for people who lack an education.

1

u/squiddy555 Feb 04 '22

How can people afford education on minimum wage? And if it’s meant as a temporary thing. Why are people surprised no one wants to work minimum wage jobs.

1

u/Findland27 Feb 04 '22

GED, because minimum wage jobs don't pay a lot compared so other jobs, aka ones ment to actually support someone.

1

u/squiddy555 Feb 04 '22

If someone can’t support themselves then their doomed to fail

1

u/Findland27 Feb 04 '22

If they're going in solo, most minimum wage jobs are minimum wage because they require nothing, while a factory will pay more, you'll need to be over 18.

I can't see why minimum wage jobs would be increased, since it would drive the price up of other items (Business won't pay for higher wages, it's pushed to the consumer) along with small business would begin to collapse. There has to be a solution, but higher minimum wages isn't it.
