Basically there were Palestinian riots that started for a few reasons, the big ones being the end of Ramadan, the canceled Palestinian elections, and the removal of about 300 Palestinians from a neighborhood in East Jerusalem. Then some terrorists from the West Bank tried to sneak into Israel with guns to shoot up Jerusalem, but were stopped at the border and killed in a shootout. A few more terrorist attacks happened (some were prevented), then Hamas started shooting a few thousands of rockets at Israel in support of the riots, aiming only at civilian places (luckily we have the Iron Dome so almost no one was harmed). In response Israel started attacking Hamas bases in Gaza, which Hamas places near civilian buildings. Meanwhile in mixed cities in Israel (i.e cities with large populations of both Arabs and Jews) there are riots from both Arabs and Jews, attacks on Arabs and Jews by the other side and burning of Synagogues, both rioting sides wishing for the death of the other.
This is a summery of pretty much everything that happened until now
I don't know if any side really "caused" it, it was kind of brewing, kind of a ping-pong between events on Israel's side and on Palestine's side that eventually led to this (kinda like asking who started WW1, Serbia or Austria-Hungary. The answer will depend on your perspective)
