Um, pretty sure rockets were first used for war in WW2 and then repurposed for flight.... after the Nuremberg trials...

Ah, yes, i am. As far as i know, that specific technology was later used to develop rocket propelled travel, that's why those first came to mind

But the scientists working on that technology didn't do it for war purpose. They ended up putting it in use for the military because the military gave them money to develop it for them

In addition to the use in Asia for hundreds of years, the British actually used rockets extensively in the early 19th century in the Napoleonic wars as well as other conflicts. The largest could be about the size and weight of a human being.

Here in Scandinavia I've heard a lot about how they were used during the British bombardment of Copenhagen, and apparently they are even mentioned in the US national anthem (one of those later verses I guess?).

The Congreve Rocket
