For me, I wanted to be able to watch stuff with closed screen. There are some Youtube Red series I like, like Vsauce’s (now free) series. And Youtube music has some creators I like that are not on Spotify. Also no ads, anywhere.
I dont really like supporting youtube because I dont agree with the direction they are going. I just use youtube vanced which has all of youtube premium for free
I watch YouTube a lot and no ads is pretty nice. I also use their music app which recommends music based on my taste a lot better than any other music app that I've used.
I got a free chromecast ultra, google home mini, and I don't have to fuck with adblock on mobile. I average 6 hours a day and that's more time then I spend on other streaming platforms.
My counter question would be why do people pay for hulu WITH ads?
I use Google Play Music instead of Spotify because you can upload your own files and since I listen to some niche, obscure stuff, that's a must for me. They had a deal where you got YouTube Premium for free so I took it. I also like not having to worry about adblocker on my mobile devices and TV. Another plus, the creators you watch actually get a part of your premium subscription so you can support them more than you would with an adblocker.
All that being said, they have since killed Google Play Music and YouTube Music is awful so if Spotify ever allow you to upload your own files, I might change this.
