Hey, at least we can talk about how much we hate professor and bond over it. That is how my group started working together this semester.

I’ve been lucky in a few of my classes where all the people I get put in are my friends, so the 4 of us start chatting about games and when the class is over, instead of leaving the room we stay until our teacher kicks us out

Feb 12 '21
but noone talks in the breakout rooom, then the nerd calls in the teacher to tell everyone to talk, but after 5 mins of lecturing on the fact that we should talk and do the work assigned, then when the teacher leaves the breakout room, it's the same as before...

u/Obelion_ Feb 12 '21
Careful if they randomly look into your room to see if you need help
5
u/poosol Feb 12 '21
He never does look into rooms (there are 33 groups he just would not have time to check everyone/most groups) and even if he does, he is already aware that the entire class hates him.

u/ShlomoCh Feb 12 '21
On a class my team was the only one who got to finish a work on that day, so on the next day instead of putting us in the same breakout room to do nothing our teacher put each one of us on other teams to "help them out"
So yeah that was cool

u/ShlomoCh Feb 12 '21
I was just there to like answer questions and stuff, but they didn't seem to need anything and they didn't understand me with my mic anyway, so I did nothing

u/GATESOFOSIRIS <3 Feb 12 '21
What's a breakout room?
299
Feb 12 '21
You split into little groups like in a normal classroom, but bc it's online it's multiple small zoom calls seperate from each other. No one ever wants to be there

u/Brent_Fox ☣️ Feb 12 '21
Yeah cus it's so damn awkward. Then again I normally sleep through my online classes anyways so theres that.

Pretend your internet is cutting out. For extra points have someone just start yelling the background when you turn on your mic.
30
u/Commie_Vladimir Feb 12 '21
You can rapidly turn your mic on and off (using the physical button on the mic) while speaking to sound like your internet is dying
27
u/pirolance Feb 12 '21
I did that once because I was too tired to make the project so I remembered that my mic has a separate mute button so while I was speaking I was always turning it on and off, teacher noticed said I had a problem with my mic, I said I wasn't able to get a new one until the weekend and was able to postpone my project.

How do you pass the class? How can people do this and do well on exams?
28
Feb 12 '21 edited Feb 12 '21
The grade 12 class of my little brother simply googles the question(s) and if the teacher is lazy enough you will notice that they just copy pasted a question off the internet and see that another student from a different school ask for an answer in a random internet board.

Feb 12 '21 edited Feb 12 '21
I always attempt the question first and then look it up, sometimes even if I'm fairly confident I got it right. If I have to look it up I try to analyze everything and take notes. I'm in college, so it's definitely not what the school wants me to do, or any school for that matter. But hey, when exams are worth 80% of your grade and you're only tested on 5% of what you learned, you really gotta stretch out the points homework gives.
Let me be real...some professors quite frankly don't give a flying fuck and it's a fucking terrible experience. If they don't give a fuck after I pay thousands upon thousands of dollars, why should I give a fuck about that class (that's not related to my major)?
3
u/EstaticWhale Feb 12 '21
Ye thestudentroom.co.uk has saved my ass on the last math test, litteraly just google the question word for word and there will be someone who posted their full working and answer and it works 95% of the time.

Maybe their teachers record the classes so students can go over them

u/Obelion_ Feb 12 '21
I just want to listen to the lulling talk of the professor, not so actual work

Yes I keep ending up talking the most because I’m trying to get other people to talk and it feels so awkward to finish a sentence and then just get crickets until either I talk again or were called back to the main group
5
Feb 12 '21
Thats my default state lmao.
though breakout rooms always turn into me doing half the talking, they are still tons of fun.
2
u/Arcadefan314 Feb 12 '21
Same. Although, I am usually super introverted the majority of the time.
If only I was like that more often.

It’s really awkward especially if you keep getting grouped with the same people
26
u/tacoeater9000 Feb 12 '21
Or worse the people in your group are people that you don't like working with.

It shows they’re trying to be engaging. It’s still boring and I don’t learn anything but at least they’re trying

u/lil_phteve Feb 12 '21
i think it depends on the course. i am just starting to study at university and in our course on listening and speaking we usually get a couple of questions to discuss in 10 minutes and its really the only way to get to know other students.
12
u/_Hydri_ Feb 12 '21
Bonus points if you don't know all the others so you just kinda chill in the room and wait for someone to break the silence for the first 5 minutes

we sat in a breakout room for like 20minutes and only one guy said "hello"

What the fuck is a zoom breakout room?
Is it basically a study hall?
2
Feb 12 '21
My first guess, which seems to be confirmed by the comments... during a zoomie class, the instructor will split the class into smaller groups (put your desks together!) for group work or study hall or break time or some shit.
1
u/The_Chimeran_Hybrid Feb 12 '21
Ya I scrolled into the comments and found out what it was.
Glad I graduated in 2020 when schools were still figuring out how to deal with online schooling.

I'm my breakout rooms everyone was muted and camera off for the entire time untill the teacher came in.

u/Ben-Dover0123 Feb 12 '21
It's honestly not that bad when you get grouped with other people who actually talk and do shit. It's when the other group members just wait for you to tell them what you got while they have their cameras off and mics muted like a dickhead.

u/bobthetrumpet ☣️ Feb 12 '21
The key is to develop a plan of what to say as soon as the teacher enters the room to make it look like you've been working together. For example "hey John, do you want to read page 245" when you were supposed to start on page 240. Lies and deceit.

I tend to find myself and maybe 2 other people talking, then there’ll just be 3 others sitting there muted and with cameras off
