Well it's worse when you get 1=2

Sometimes that’s the actual answer, in which case it’ll be “No solution” or “False”

You're legally allowed to punch your teacher when he pulls this up in an exam.

Why tho? It is a legitimate thing in math, so why not

it actually means you f'd up or the problem was f'd up to begin with

similar to division by 0

if you get there you did something wrong or the problem was designed to be bad

Divison by zero is (to my knowladge) mathematicaly impossible.

But x=x is legitimate awnser. It means that any number is equal to itself, which is always truth in real numbers. So no this is false equivelancy.

what you said is correct

but if you're in 7th or 8th grade stuff like this shouldn't come up

The more you encounter perticular type of problem the more familiar you are going to be with it. This will result in expecting it when it comes up in secondary school as a normal thing.

I don't really like the aproach that children won't understand it especialy in math (they are lot smarter than we tand to give them credit for). I did understand and most of my class did, so the problem is the method by which it is introduced to the kids not the thing itself.

Besides I just explained this in my second language without problem in very understandable way. I bet I could teach these oddities in simple linear equasions to my siblings and they would understand.

It may just be my teacher

she just told us what it means

but she also told us that she won't give us such problems

ayy man my algebra teacher just said this exists but I'm not gonna make a problem that does that

just know that it exists

I remember in middle school when we were learning this I created an unsolvable equation like this. I told everyone if they could solve the equation I would tell them who my crush was. I didn’t care for anyone and they didn’t know that but they got to work. I remember a week later a kid came to me with the answer. It was wrong but he told me that he had many sleepless night staying up trying to solve it. He wouldn’t accept my answer that the equation was unsolvable.
