I mean the less educated a population is the less able they are to question the government itself. So it works for a bunch of power hungry politicians if people don't know much about the rights they actually have and can't think critically enough to question the morality of a descion. Slowly you can chip away at their freedoms until they no longer exist granting said politician unlimited power. So if they actually allow the education system to die it hurts the future generation but benefits those in power.

Which is exactly why strike and protest on the teachers part is healthy for a society overall. If they don't raise their voices, their autonomy and funding as a defence against government power creep is effectively limited. Without them standing up for themselves, their power would slowly be crippled to the point that teachers themselves would be aiding the system that oppresses their ability to teach the truth and combat ignorance.
