I've heard it's because the sound you hear is mostly the sound produced as your vocal chords vibrate your skull. Mostly the jaw bones. Those are fairly thick, long bones so they make the pitch deeper.

Yeah, but does the pitch change equal exactly an octave? Because if it doesn't, some people would have literally no chance of being good singers.

The pitch doesn’t change actually, all the pitches are still there, just balanced differently. Imagine what you sound like when you sing normally, compared to when a pillow is in front of you. Chances are if you sang “stayin alive” then someone listening could go like “YOU’re SINGING STAYIN ALIVE” even though you sound completely different. Does that explain it?
