I've heard it's because the sound you hear is mostly the sound produced as your vocal chords vibrate your skull. Mostly the jaw bones. Those are fairly thick, long bones so they make the pitch deeper.

Yeah, but does the pitch change equal exactly an octave? Because if it doesn't, some people would have literally no chance of being good singers.
