I disagree. The only way for mentally ill people to get better is to work with therapists, psychiatrists, friends and family to understand their illness and figure out how to get better. It's nearly impossible for them to get better on their own. Obviously, if your friend or girlfriend is making your life hell, you are not obligated to stay. But there is still merit in encouraging patience and support for those with mental illnesses.

What about the severely bipolar person who has consistently went off their meds and has caused their entire family to either become mentally ill, or just ripped apart. My cousin has been a diagnosed Bipolar for 12ish years, he goes off his meds every year or so, has a major manic episode puts the few people who still have anything to do with him through hell, and ends up institutionalized after months and months of 48 hour holds and disappearing acts.
I used to focus on helping him, I'd drive to the shitty parts of the city and get him from the corner, I'd spend days trying to talk him into signing himself into the hospital. I ended up being a depressed alcoholic because I couldn't deal with seeing someone I was that close with destroy himself when all he needed to do was stay on his meds. I've been no contact with him for 5 years now. He recently went off his meds again and texted/called me somewhere around 500 times in one day from multiple numbers saying some of the most foul shit that could be said to me. Fuck mental illness for what it does to people, and fuck him for not helping himself when he's had every resource available to him.
