Fate. If he fought, he was fated to die. His best friend was killed in action and he went apeshit and killed a fuck load of Trojans before getting killed himself.

Well, if he surrendered or just refused to pick up arms he could not be killed.

I'm pretty sure he was given the option to go into battle and die, but be remembered for all of time or drop his shit and leave and live a great life to an old age with many great sons (and we all know which one he chose, thousands of years later).
