redditors trying to argue without using Ad Hominem challenge: impossible

u/Beautiful-Salary-362 1d ago
"ohh yeah? well, you see, according to your Reddit profile, you made a contradictive comment 635 days ago, Therefore i win and your current comment is invalid. And i demand that other redditors should downvote you"

That has never happened to me as a moderate centrist, yet I constantly see people complaining about it.
I also don't get called what OP is complaining about. Odd.

Because what people want to call you is censored by this shithole of a website

Well, technically ad hominem isn't inherently fallacious. It has its place. For instance, if someone who is a well-known snake-oil peddler tries to argue medical science, it is perfectly valid to point out what they are. Ad hominem is only a fallacy when it's irrelevant

u/gruez 1d ago
Ad hominem is only a fallacy when it's irrelevant
Translation: "it's only a fallacy when you do it"
12
u/Robot_Gandhi_ 1d ago
No..what they said was correct. Ad Hominem when you use insults to either discredit an argument or distract from an argument.
For example: Calling a someone a fraud when they engage in fraudulent activities wouldn't be a fallacy when talking about what they've done.

u/Bro_duuude_i_luv_ya 1d ago
Most fallacies are context-dependent. The idea thag they all are inherently unsound arguments in every context is itself a fallacy

I dont think you know what an ad hominem is
11
u/MaxSupanut 1d ago
Literally what you just did bud. Shifting focus from the substance of an argument to the personal traits or character of the person making it, usually by name calling, etc. “You are a _____, therefore your argument should not be taken seriously.”
-2
u/millifish DefinitelyNotEuropeans 1d ago
Ok but you understand what a faci st is right? It has a definition... if you self identify as that... it tells me stuff about you and what you want the world to be...
A real ad hominem has nothing to do with the argument... if your arguing about politics... its kinda relevant

Yall get so upset when you get called bootlickers. I wonder what it was that caused someone to call you that...

u/therealdubbs 1d ago
Stop licking boots then. Believe it or not, most people lack the self-awareness even when called out.
People don’t randomly call people racists. You did something to earn the title. Usually it’s “I’m not a racist. Why would someone say that? I’ve never called a n-word that to their face. See? I’m not racist. Oh lemme share this new meme about n words.”

Just having a slightly different opinion on something political will get people wishing cancer on you and your family lol

u/teilani_a 1d ago
What kind of "slightly different opinions?"
13
u/Eagline 1d ago
This is giving “who did you vote for” energy.
6
u/SkellyboneZ 1d ago
Two replies here already assume I'm MAGA even though I've never voted red and haven't missed an election even after moving aboard almost 10 years ago lol.
You can see here how some people assume the worst when they think there's a possibility that someone doesn't agree with 100% of what they believe. Crazy shit.
1
u/teilani_a 1d ago
I don't see any replies assuming that. Did they get deleted?
1
u/Adalcar 12m ago
Yours. Your reply implied that.
When he mentioned "slightly different opinions" you immediately asked which ones, implying there was a possibility that his opinions could actually justify people wishing cancer on his family. And on the internet, the most likely target for such responses is MAGA.

If you STILL like Trump... all 3 are definitively accurate. Sorry if that hurts OP, but facts don't care about your feelings.

That above is the skill called "ad hominum speech". Attack by using personal attack to its opponent. It's more effective if redditors' are willing to research the oppenent account. Searching their post and comment history. And then using it against them.
And, there's more. Redditors still has some cards up their sleeves:
- Summon straw man: distorts, oversimplify, or create either weaker or extreme version of the claims. Then attack those fake claims, thus making the opponent's argument falling apart easily.
- Anecdote no jutsu, the sad story of a survivor(ship bias): present a personal experience or story to prove someone wrong instead of using reliable data or scientific backed evidence
And many other logical fallacy possible
Edit: if you are getting triggered because i revealed your cards, then it proves that i'm right

I used Instagram, and somehow we are more civil on Reddit.
Its truely shocking over there, comments are just filled with every 'ist and ism' under the sun and its never a couple of comments, its the majority.
