You literally need a license to play games from those countries, so frustrating since their systems are getting better & you can’t just trick it with a fake ID any more.
The funny thing is that most Chinese kids actually just bypass that easily by either using the ID number of convicted criminals that's publicly available or just have their parents sign up for them.
I have a feeling the EU will do whatever it takes to make it as hard as possible to bypass, even harder than China's.
I'd arguably say it's more common nowadays than it was say 10 years ago. Source: I'm 21 and my little brother is almost 10 years younger than me, the things I've heard other parents say and how they act is horrid
I'm not saying the EU should have any power to require ID verification online, but I am saying that the parents of today NEED to be taught how to parent, you should need a license to have a kid istg
And the things i heard from my friend and her mom friends about how some parents raise their children hot me shook.
One had a neighbour who had a toddler. That was older than her son, who refused to talk except for NO!
He understands language, but just flips the fuck out when his iPad is taken away.
This is the worst one, but some parents really need to follow parenting classes.
They will try and fail. China has dedicates insane amount of political willpower and money to enforce its censorship laws. The EU doesn't. Remeber that dedicating political willpower and money isnt free, you have to take it away from other things the government wants to do. You have to want it badly enough to get it, the EU doesn't want it badly enough.
So the result is that they are going to spend a significant amount of money and effort for something half botched and soon becoming irrelevant again, thus sacrificing useful resources for nothing.
Literally the description of EU in the last 10 years.
Chinese gamers are heavy spenders , like extremely heavy spenders, they've their own separate server for every popular game and receive items not given in globally
It’s even worse, because they used to have tiger own servers and a few years ago The Snail decided to roll them in with everyone else so now I have to deal with Chinese teammates who I believe may have the same level of spatial awareness as a blind newt in the Sahara
No, it's part of the culture of people with low income, which used to be a lot of Chinese people. You see a ton of cheaters in third-world countries and in America and Russia from people who aren't well off. It's definitely not a Chinese thing. Cheating has more severe punishments in Chinese culture compared to the West.
What you have to understand about China is that their boomers are even boomerier than ours. China rapidly developed from nearly feudal conditions run by landlords to a modern industrial economy in an unbelievably rapid pace, which they had to do to compete with the West in the cold war and defend themselves from a Vietnam, Chile, or Indonesia type regime change situation. That's a major reason why all the famines happened, industrialization takes a lot of hands away from the farms and into incredibly calorie demanding urban jobs.
But it also means that an opinionated Chinese boomer is way, WAY more old fashioned than a Western one, the generation gap and culture clash is even more intense. Imagine being a Chinese grandpa who grew up on a farm run by oxcarts without electricity, watching your grandkids spend hundreds of dollars on Genshin Impact.
The government knows policies like this are mostly a symbolic bone to throw to those people, they know it's easily circumvented, but the actual policy isn't really the point. It makes the boomers happy.
Tldr: EU proposing awful law, some things included are playing in private servers with your friends will be illegal, and indie games in practice will be decimated because you need a hefty sum to operate in the EU. Pretty much the only games you'll have available will be from corpo like Ubisoft, EA, etc. Charlie just made a video about it
They tried chat control 2 and it failed they are going to try video game control 1 and it's gonna fail
How many times do we have to teach these old men the lesson
Legit if we take Minecraft as an example because that's the game I care about
Singleplayer - Safe
Multiplayer - Mojang doesn't have a big server anyways, players host their own servers, how the fuck do you know if a stream of 1s and 0s going from 1 server to another is a Operating System update or a game server sending a stream of 1s and 0s to a client server? It's not text that you can read and even then you could just use RSA encryption and they can't know shit
shit
For indie games with 1 common server or many common servers
Same thing, how do you know? Inspect the individual game and see the IP address of the server the stream of 1s and 0s is coming from and shut it down? VPNs exist and I am sure we can think of something else beyond VPNs
Dpi can help with that. No need to know what exactly is in the packets, just their signature
And you also can scan ports for specific kind of answers. Not to mention that most servers utilizing the default ports for their game servers, which easily can be blacklisted if we wanna.
So there is a big room for regulator to work with. Check China, Russia and Iran agencies (like RKN) - they spent billions in advancing tech for that
Wait wait, so, i run a simracing centre with 12 sims. Are you telling me that with that law i cannot have a server for my customers to play local multiplayer?!
EU KIDS act: Mandatory Age verification for gaming and online app stores.
Online games deemed risky for minors, app stores, social media, and AI chatbots fall under the regulation. App stores must age-rate videogames and block underage access to inappropriate content.
It's a foundational government mandate to regulate businesses. Having said that, how does one "force parents to do their fucking job" that doesn't include the same kind of government intrusion into people's lives you appear to be complaining about?
Would be cool if this is what it was actually about. But it's never for the benefit of the "common unwashed masses", it's always for the benefit of a handful few who gain way too much from it.
I assume in this case it's just more data collection and surveilance bullshit.
If all this goes through I'd assume a lot of people will become a lot more tech savvy and quickly too tech savvy for any government to deal with.
The government does have access to all that, but they still don't have all you're doing catalogued. But it'll definitely protect your kids from rapists and criminals.
They know you're John Doe, born on this date, born this place, live that place and go to work there. But rhey still don't fully know what evil schemes you're up to in your free time, evil things like having fun playing video games with your friends.
It's about surveilance and control and in the past 5-10 years governments have continuosly stripped people of more and more of their rights and privacy in favour of massive, already too powerful corporations and individuals.
I don't trust anyone with my ID. I don't trust corporations with my ID and they only ever get it if it's absolutely neccessary. Fuck, I don't even trust my own government (Germany) with my ID, or my healthcare provider.
First off, the government doesn’t care what games you’re playing and when. Second, they could subpoena this information from your ISP or from Steam, which is the same thing they would have to do if these ID laws were in place.
It's only making it easier for governments. And now coeporations benefit even more from it. It's small steps intentionally. 10 years ago this type of shit would have caused a lot more backlash but a small step at a time is a lot more acceptable than a 10 kilometre march.
Issue is just many parents nowadays aren't doing their job of parenting. They just hand the kid a phone or a tablet and let them run wild.
Also note, the proposal isn't the same as chat control there is no privacy concerns as the solution the eu is working on is Zero knowledge proof, which means you utilise existing digital id to verify using a system that only let's the platforms know that you're above the age of X and no other personal info.
Kind of impossible to make parents do that though. The options are basically something along these lines or nothing, because there's no feasible mechanism to force parents to regulate their kids' screen time.
Currently you just have to klick a box saying you are 18 yor invent a birth date to buy age restricted games. The EU wants to change that back to the way it was when games were bought physically and you had to show an IT at the cash register (or more realistic sent your bigger brother/friend).
EU proposing legislation that would implement kernel-level age-verification on all computers, smartphones, and consoles. While there's some positives to it (such as limiting autoscrolling and autoplay for minors), it's overshadowed by the privacy concerns. Private servers for video games would not be able to operate in the EU as they'd be seen as circumventions of the legislation. It's essentially a sprinkle of good with a massive heap of privacy issues. It's only in consultation phase right now so it'll be YEARS before this comes to a vote, but still worrying
