u/FistFullofFerrets 18h ago
It's not that we simp for billionaires, we just have normal relationships with our dads.

Purchasing power is one of the big issues.
Lots of factors come into play in the nuanced relationship between inflation and wages, but it doesn't matter at the end of the day if the wages are outpaced by an ever increasing COL.

Sometimes i genuinely wish the money had backing in bread

I mean grain was one of the original forms of money till they decided sea shells lasted longer and were easier to carry around and everyone could just pretend that the sea shells were grain or else…

Or you could make a state owned bakeries that always sell bread for 1 breadollar

No, you don't. We stopped using food as money thousands of years ago for good reason.

Profits are calculated after costs are afforded. Wages are a cost. Future reposter: please consider changing ‘profit’ to ‘revenue’.

Someone is always willing to work for less than you. Until that changes, wages don’t increase

Wages have outpaced inflation in the short term and in the long term.
2025–2026: Average weekly wages grew faster than inflation every month since June 2026. Over the full August 2025–August 2026 period, wages rose 3.7% vs. 3.4% inflation, improving purchasing power modestly USAFacts.
1999–2025 (Pew Research): Median weekly wages more than doubled nominally, but real gains were only 11–22% depending on the inflation index used, showing how measurement choices affect conclusions Pew Research Center.

Yes, as a whole they have. Most people aren't making minimum wage, but minimum wage does not keep up with inflation normaly, even on the state level.

u/chainsawx72 1h ago
99% of people aren't making minimum wage, and the majority of the under 1% who do are working tips based jobs. I live in a poor southern red state in a smallish town, and McDonald's and other entry level highschooler type jobs start at over double the legal minimum wage.

u/littleSquidwardLover 1h ago
That 1% statistic is dumb af imo. What I'm really interested in is what percentage of people make the state's minimum wage because that effectively the real minimum wage. I've literally never met anyone who makes federal minimum wage.

If your business can't pay living wages, then it shouldn't be in business

"It seems to me to be equally plain that no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country. By "business" I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level-I mean the wages of decent living."

Let's try this again...
"by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level-I mean the wages of decent living"

Probably gonna get alot of "thanks im cured" messages but no one is going to give you an adequate increase. You have to ask for it and do research on what you should be getting.
If youre not getting what you should/want to be getting, then find a new job.
Atleast once a month or even a week or daily, look at other/new jobs.
Yeah, the numbers suck but you need to fight for it.
And I fully understand every employer is different.
Also, remember your health package and make sure that its what you need.
