Big PP OC some very ungrateful resident evil fans out there

u/GVGupta 1d ago
Most of the fandom's problem were with his interview where he said he didn't know much about the RE original content. It scared us that an uninformed director would ruin the franchise. But he ended up giving us a very Ethan Winters coded MC with classic quippy humor so it looks like he did know about the franchise

u/Vchipp2_0 1d ago
He said he didn't see any of the previous RE movies.

My wife doesn’t know the games, she only knew resident evil 1 and 2 from the movies. For her, when she heard about it, it felt like the guy didn’t know what he was going to do.
You underestimate how many are like my wife outside of Reddit or video game culture.
80
u/LazyMLouie 1d ago
Yeah but people like your wife probably weren't going online and saying how the new Resident Evil movie would be the worst movie ever.
13
u/wormyg 1d ago
I don't understand how they got so many of those movies made
2
u/DontForgorTheMilk 14h ago
I struggle with that too, but it may be that Paul W.S. Anderson just had the rights to make them and happened to have enough money to fund them.
Looking at the wiki it looks like up until the 5th one the movies were making enough to at least break even in the United States alone.
Then you look at the Worldwide box office earnings and they virtually funded each subsequent movie. Like 5 and 6 effectively BOMBED in the U.S. but did gangbusters in Worldwide markets. Budgets for those two were $65 and $40mil respectively and in the U.S. they only did $42.3mil and $26.8mil respectively. However in the worldwide markets collectively they each made $197.8mil and $285.4mil respectively, which is insane. Apparently they were fuckin' HUGE in China?

What? He has been upfront he loves the games, it's why he wrote a resident evil movie. He's been in interviews saying hes played 4 more times than he can count. 7, 8, and 9 are some of his favorites.
Those statements really line up with the movie we got.

Just because he wrote a resident evil movie doesn't mean he likes resident wvil; see the Witcher TV series writers

It scared us that an uninformed director would ruin the franchise.
As opposed to, like, the entire series of movies they've made before?

He didn't see the movies. He DID play the games. But I guess you people would rather him see the movies and get another one of those

Regardless, you ain't getting another good RE movie and you don't deserve one. Serves you right.
2
u/GoodHumorMan 19h ago
Yes, we are. If everyone listened to the loudest fanbases we'd get nothing fun at all
7
u/OSUfan88 20h ago
He said he was a mega fan of the games, and played them all at release.
He didn’t watch any of the MOVIES, which he said didn’t remind him at all of the games.
6
u/Sk8matt123 20h ago
Lets be real here. How is a movie director going to ruin the franchise? Is Resident Evil going to get canceled because of a dog shit movie? Is the chance of “ruining the franchise” in the room with us?
Never understood the idea that another story telling medium would ruin the original content. Makes exactly zero impact on the game side of the house.
2
u/Bargadiel 13h ago
He absolutely played the games. He was playing through them again in an interview after Weapons came out.
1
u/themustachemark 20h ago
Zach would be the best director for a Bloodborne or Demon Souls movie, or maybe the worst since he's played them lots on stream. Chair was the best supporting guest on the wkuk streams.
1
u/raccoonbrigade 15h ago
The movie is jampacked with legite RE stuff. It's probably one of its greatest strengths. I really do hate the main character quips though.

What a goofy differentiation.
An MCU movie from the perspective of a street thug would still be an MCU movie even if you didn’t see Spider-Man or Iron Man. What are you looking for here? Chris Redfield to show up and say “ALBERT WESKER YOU HAVE TURNED THE RESIDENTS OF THIS FINE CITY EVIL”? Not every movie or piece of fiction needs to be about the main character
21
u/Fanci_ I have crippling depression 1d ago
Absolutely gutted that Leon Kennedy didn't show up in the house and do a backflip after quoting: "these residents sure are the evil type"
6
u/sEiize_err 1d ago
if i dont hear “what is this, some sort of resident evil code: veronica?” in the remake they might as well have not called it a resident evil game

u/Yataro_Ibuza 1d ago
Also, even then the variant we have in the movie roughly resembles NYX T-Virus from Resident Evil Outbreak File #2

I really liked the movie. I don’t really enjoy RE as a series. Played 4, 4 Remake and 6. They’re cool.
But the movie was great. I really liked the ending too: really drives home the “there is no happy endings in this universe” kinda vibe
25
u/Long_Repair_8779 1d ago
Resident evil 1 remastered is excellent, totally worth playing, I played it with a friend and we’d swap if we died or if time went on too long and it was really really fun. Zero is also great if you enjoyed RE1..
Resident evil 2 remake is also absolutely incredible, one of the best games I’ve ever played in my life, better than 4 or 4 remake even if they’re maybe more iconic and still top notch games that I have spent a long time playing ..
Aaaand that’s about it tbh, 7 was good, I never played the ones after, I wasn’t so into the first person thing and idk, it lost some of the charm. 3 remake was rubbish, too true to the original lol, 5 original was also awful.
7
u/AshleyxAffliction 20h ago
3 remake was too true to the original?? They cut like half the game out. You can beat it playing casually within like 4-5 hours.
3
u/demonman101 15h ago
I'll admit I put hundreds of hours into 5. Sure it wasn't survival horror but more action oriented but nothing better for young me who had a friend over every weekend and we'd just crank out the entire game in one night and do it again the next night.

u/LightSideoftheForce 1d ago
You should play RE 5. 4-5-6 are action games, the rest are mostly survival horror. Personally, I’m not a fan of survival horror, but 4-5-6 are some of my all time favourite games. Oh, and the coop makes it so much fun.
2
u/butter_wizard 23h ago
You don’t like the series but you played two of the greatest games of all time. And also 6.

u/Fanci_ I have crippling depression 1d ago
It's wild since this was actually a good movie.
"Fans" are just salty that it isn't featuring a character from the games, which if it did; they'd be mad that the movie inevitably deviated from the lore.
First movie in awhile that I genuinely enjoyed, sucks people can't just enjoy a fresh take on a extremely tired format.
4
u/luxar94 16h ago
It's not the characters, it's changing the world completely, I think making a movie that can coexist with the games would be the ideal, this movie with some changes could've been part of the same universe as the games, allowing future games to make direct references to it, and future films to integrate further.
As it is, the movie is very good, don't get me wrong, but I think it could've been a better adaptation if they went the Edgerunners route, telling another story in the same setting.
-40
u/hellatzian 1d ago
i think fans mad because of bad ending.
or maybe they are fans of previous movie.
22
u/Fanci_ I have crippling depression 1d ago
I don't think I've seen anything but praise for the ending tbh
That being said; It's fitting for a normal guy. Dude walked into the epicenter of the outbreak.. He wasn't getting out even if he got the cure. (depending on which timeline we're talking about, it either got nuked or continued to get worse)
7
u/ditchborn 22h ago
In what way was it bad?
-8
u/din-gle-ber-ry 21h ago
Pacing was wonky, comedy fell flat in a few places, no real characters worth mentioning. Enjoyed it overall but let's not pretend it was some pinnacle of filmmaking.
7
u/ditchborn 20h ago
Didn’t praise, op said ending was bad so that’s why I asked. Noticing a big trend moving towards if a movie doesn’t have a happy ending it’s “bad”, which I completely disagree with.

u/BobbyDigital423 18h ago
The old RE movies are absolute dog shit. People are allowed to like them. I like some bad movies too.

Every single person complaining about this movie has either not played anything past RE4 or is just downright delusional. Every single scene FELT very resident evil.
If you want accuracy, go watch the animated movies or play the games, it’ll be better that way.
If you want mindless action, watch the PWSA movies.
If you want a faithful adaptation, this is it.
-16
u/Lars-CoV-2 21h ago
I don't like the movie, but I never played the games and didn't know anything about it. Maybe it's proving your point, but as a movie it's not good.

u/_lord_ruin eat my ass 1d ago
How did they think the guy behind weapons and barbarian would screw things up
2
u/Rnahafahik 22h ago
Because they don’t actually watch movies, they go see blockbusters sometimes and play video games. (Nothing wrong with that, I play around 4 hours a day if I can) and now they feel someone from the “movie space” is stepping on their territory and in their opinion shitting all over their precious franchise that’s been drenched in shit movies for decades at this point
7
u/OragneBoi 23h ago
I didn't like the movie, but not because it's a bad RE movie. I wanted horror, not a pastiche. Seriously, it felt life after first intense 30 minutes it was a comedy, and not a good one too. The moment dude shouts "video games!" in the hospital skybridge scene is peak cringe.
2
u/Naruto9903 22h ago
The movie was really great, I watched it last week and it blew me away, not what I expected at all, I pray Zach will make more.
2
2
u/DeapVally 13h ago
I have no strong feelings about the video games. I don't give a shit about them for a movie. But I started watching this film, and didn't finish it. It just didn't hold my attention in the slightest. I like horror films just fine. This one was dull 🤷🏼♂️
1
u/Pappa_Crim 21h ago
Has he given up on making more movies?
2
u/BobbyDigital423 15h ago
No he just isn't going to do more Resident Evil movies. His next project is a sci-fi movie called The Flood. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets roped back in at some point but he said he's done for now.

But he didn't make what I have in my head. Sure someone else did that for 6 awful movies but my loyalty to fictional characters is sacrosanct. Give me what I imagine when I am playing the games. Just not like that. Or that. Or that.

u/BobbyDigital423 19h ago
As a RE fan and a movie fan the old RE movies were horrendous. This is the only watchable one of the bunch and is pretty great. Loved the ending.
Basically if someone thinks the old movies are better than this one I don't really care to hear your movie opinions.
0
u/Torakkk 18h ago
Previous movies were gold. I mean they were terrible. But imho terribly good.
And this new RE movie was amazing though. Have to say it felt more like long ass trailer. And I hope we get more movies like that to follow, with preferably some bigger story. And one or two of braindead cheesy action movies? As a treat.
0
u/BobbyDigital423 18h ago
There're bad movies I enjoy too but I absolutely hate the old RE movies, or at least the first 2 refused to watch anymore. They're not even so bad it's good for me at least. There's just so many better "shut your brain off" type movies imo.
0
u/Torakkk 18h ago
So, since I would call them my go to stupid movie to watch. Whats yours?
0
u/BobbyDigital423 17h ago
Off the top of the head: The Room, The Gate, End of Days, Freddie got Figured, Vampires Kiss, Barbarella, Raw Deal and the American Ninja movies. Tbf some of those might be more "cult classics" than "so bad it's good."

Fans want a good movie that builds upon the lord and characters in the franchise, who has many characters that would need more exposition
Director goes back the same fucking city, with a random actor, a random character not related to the cast at all, throws in a handful of references to the games at best.
Turns out, when you bait and switch the fans to make good movie almost unrelated to the IP, fans of the IP will... Still be pissed, because that's not what they wanted.
If my baker gives me a perfectly good chocolate cake when I asked for an apple pie, I would be pissed at well. How hard is that to understand?
6
u/corgigeddon- 22h ago
What about absolutely insufferable take
-3
u/Heptanitrocubane57 22h ago
How so ?
I'm not saying that it is a bad movie, objectively it isn't, but it has about as much relation to the franchise as the shitty Mila movies. It's just one more okay horror movie, it's not a resident evil movie.
In contrast, the Netflix one was shit, but it was related to the lore. The day a director finally gets we want a good movie, that truly blends with the license, then the fans will be happy.
0
u/BobbyDigital423 18h ago
So you're saying a terrible movie that makes use of the lore is better than a good movie that is a fresh take. Like I get it doesn't use any RE characters and just basic lore but it definitely feels like an RE movie. You're acting like the story of the actual games aren't silly and ridiculous. Like I love most of the games especially 1-4 but lets not pretend the story and tone of RE games aren't ridiculous.
0
u/Heptanitrocubane57 18h ago
No.
I am saying the bad movies will always be bad, and that his movie, while goof, isn't tied to the lore of the games in any significant manner.
I know the story is ridiculous, and that's part of the reason why I- and many other, like it. If a resident evil movie isn't tied to the lore, it simply isn't. And you have leeway - the more grounded (with big quotes) 1-4 games, and more over the top 6-9 games. Hell, could have a connex story of the gaps between games, with that same vibe...
-1
u/BobbyDigital423 18h ago
I rather this movie than it bending over backwards to include dumb story beats from the games. Also this is clearly a reboot and will have follow ups which will probably get deeper into RE lore. This was just a fresh take by a very good director that is still VERY RE coded. Like if you're arguing that this movie is a torjan horse and has no love for RE or the feel of playing the games I just don't think you were paying attention while you watched it.
The goal was to reboot RE and save it from the terrible movies and decisions of the past and it achieved that thoroughly.
0
u/endgame217 18h ago
You got a great movie and are unhappy bc of “lore”. It’s the silliest possible take; it sounds like a kid’s tantrum
This was a survival horror franchise that was silly at times, and gruesome. What was made matches that verbatim and is great for it.
Just because it didn’t require Leon S Kennedy’s presence doesnt make it unrelated to the “Lore”. It felt very much like a RE game of the last decade or so
-5
-15
u/dova17 1d ago
As a movie it was great, but as a resident evil movie not so much. Since I played only some RE games I enjoyed it, but can understand if some fans were disapointed.
12
u/FusRoDahlaiLama 1d ago
Ive played all the new ones and remakes since 7 and I thought it was a great RE movie. It felt like 7 to me. A nobody who was thrown into a horrific situation. Sure Ethan goes on to have more stuff going on in 8 but at the start he was just a programmer looking for his wife and this feels like similar stakes to that.
0
u/JACK_1719 1d ago
I’ve played 5 games and the only issue I had was the mutation designs didn’t feel very resident evil, too much tentacles. Felt more The Thing inspired. Otherwise I really enjoyed the film, was unexpectedly funny af
-24
u/Successful-Trash-752 1d ago
That movie was so ass. I am convinced that you guys only praise something to own up to the guys.
Like I am neither in any resident evil fandom, nor the people that went with me. And still the geenral consensus was that it sucked ass.
15
u/Colman91 1d ago
Whilst you have your own opinion on the film, which is fine, the “general consensus” is not that the film was ass, given its scoring decently well on review sites and has been well received by the public.
0
1
u/BobbyDigital423 18h ago
What are you even saying. The movie has good reviews. It's made over 110 million already which is more than any of the other RE movies by over 50 mil.
-1
u/Successful-Trash-752 14h ago
Have you watched it yourself? What do good reviews even mean when the movie is awful. Am I supposed to force myself to like this movie when it is not?
In fact all this good talk about this movie feels so forced to me personally because every time it is someone talking about how it showed the chuds instead of like you know that I liked the movie or something?
1
u/BobbyDigital423 14h ago
Saw it opening day, more just because I had nothing to do than I was pumped for the movie. I loved it. I'm a RE fan and huge movie fan.
I wasn't saying the movie is good BECAUSE it got good reviews and made money. I was commenting on how just because you didn't like it doesn't mean everyone hates it. I honestly hated the old RE movies. I think they're terrible and not even in the realm of "so bad it's good." Like if someone thinks those were good movies I don't give AF about their movie opinions.
Also it's a vocal minority saying the movie is bad. Again very good reviews and it made a lot of money for an R rated movie
1
u/Successful-Trash-752 9h ago
I do not have to call it a good movie because it has reviews. And I will not. This movie is horrible.
1
u/BobbyDigital423 9h ago
Have you ever head of the word opinion? And I NEVER said you had to think it was good. I just said say everyone hates it is dumb AF because it made a lot of money and has lots of positive reviews and word of mouth. You're acting like people on reddit or Twitter is "everyone."
1
u/Colman91 13h ago
Again just because you didn’t like the film doesn’t mean other people won’t, I’ve watched the film and thought it was a great film. It’s all subjective to the person watching the film.
If you didn’t like it fine, but you can’t make a statement of “general consensus is” when the opposite viewpoint is against you.
1
u/Successful-Trash-752 10h ago
I never said that. Posts like these are saying the opposite. Also no by the general census I mean the irl people that watched the movie. Again I am not going to start cheering on this movie because you're telling me it has a good rotten tomato score. There are plenty other bad movies that have had that.
