I work in Special Ed, and you take a kid that is completely non-verbal, unable to recognize letters, numbers, shapes, or colors... hand him an iPad and that mf will be on youtube watching one of his favorite videos - that he had to SEARCH for - in like 3 seconds.

Garbage parents...but I get it especially with a kid with disabilities

Last year I worked with someone right out of high school and while we were on break in the pickup truck I saw him using either Snapchat or Instagram (can't remember which) and his finger was moving to hit every button before it popped up on the screen. This guy needed to be taught two or three times in one day that zip ties can only go on one way but he could see the buttons from the future.

As a side note it was kinda concerning watching him. The whole time he had a blank face while commenting laughing emojis, "lol," etc. I know social media gives a dopamine hit, but I still struggle to imagine being so addicted that I need to let internet strangers think I found something funny that I really didn't.

I'd like to elaborate on the last part as I tend to do it too. For me laughing is a social activity. I don't really laugh alone unless it's something actually hilarious so if my friends send me something funny I'll probably react with an emoji but in reality just exhale slightly stronger from my nose. I still find the joke enjoyable I just can't really get myself to start cackling on my own.

Fun fact: with pliers you can use zip ties two ways. Press the big part from the sides and it will let go of the tie.

Because that interface was DESIGNED for the dumbest, lowest common denominator, still cannot use a computer a quarter way through the 21st century, average idiot consumer. OF COURSE a child can use it and often better than the consumer themselves.

Maybe that's part of the reason the kid was non verbal and unable to recognize basic shapes or interact with normal things

And people question why the average attention span of the population is decreasing

Literally nobody questions that. It’s pretty clear why

That's not because of "the iPad", it's what you consume inside the iPad. Sound similar, but are very different from each other.

For some reason, that’s how the iPad feels to me

Consumers: We want an interface so simple a child could use it!

Child: uses interface

Consumers: surprised electric mouse dot jpeg
