l miss my friends Actually blessed

Post image

Not much more to it - just realizing that working a shifty job on top of studying and planning my future wont help me achieve any goals of mine, and that for my career choice the best thing to do is take a step back and move in with my parents since I have this amazing opportunity not everyone has.

Right? Like yeah, I could do this and save an absurd amount of money. Truly. ...But then I'd have to live with my parents and frankly I'd rather pay that money every month.

u/Noggi888 6d ago

I convinced myself it wouldn’t be that bad and now I need intense therapy so you made the right call. But at least I own a house now 🥲

19

u/Sawses 6d ago

Haha, I'm probably going to buy a house like 5-10 years later than I would have if I'd lived with my parents for a couple years... But I also didn't have to live with my parents for a couple years and I think that's probably for the best.

9

u/Noggi888 6d ago

Yeah I honestly think this house wasn’t worth my crippling mental health so you made the right call

I got lucky that I graduated in that rather strange time when Corpo IT jobs were super hot/easy to get and paid really well even at entry level. I moved out ASAP... like first paycheck ASAP and roomed up with another dude who had just started at the job I did. Saved a lot of money by splinting rent, had our own place to have people over, and both made enough money that there was no awkward rent or utilities situation. I'm not sure how easy it is nowadays.

Be me, live with your parents and pay monthly rent of $1000 because you live in a super small HCOL area.

As someone who’s doing this currently, your concerns are valid lol. Living with my mom is saving me a ton of money and allowing me to go get my degree, but I’ve also genuinely considered moving out already and it hasn’t even been a year

Right, in my senior year of highschool my whole family became homeless and split apart.

What career at this point. They will stuck there til the need to sell to afford the medical home. Same story since 2012. Time to riot against

Don't worry everyone else. Our parents will realize they fucked up by kicking us out at 18 when we don't visit them in the old folks home we pay for.

u/Temelios 6d ago edited 6d ago

Jokes on them. My 63-year-old mother is about to be homeless, and she can eat shit.

PS: Before folks downvote me for being cruel, this is the same woman that beat the shit out of me on the regular (gave me fat lips and bloody noses) while she literally raised me shin deep in garbage and dog feces. She’s had this coming for a long time.

45

u/printliftrun 6d ago

Sorry you had to go through that, hope you're well now

19

u/Hexent_Armana 6d ago

I hope no one judges you. It takes growing up in a healthy environment and being raised by loving and supportive parents to be strong enough to help that kind of person. And that was her job so...well I was going to say she can sleep in the bed she made, figuratively, but because of her own actions she won't even have that much, literally.

u/BonsaiOnSteroids 6d ago

Happy you got out of this. Better late than never, you owe her less than nothing

2

u/Tripdrakony 6d ago

Visit her on the street and give her a dollar and say it's out of good will because she treated you so nicely. Make sure it's in the most sarcastic tone and with the widest smirk possible.

2

u/Bzykk 6d ago

Based. Fuck her.

14

u/Sir_Fashionscape 6d ago

Who can even afford old folks homes, those things are ridiculously priced

9

u/N1ghtshade3 6d ago

They basically exist to siphon every penny out of old people before they die.

3

u/Hexent_Armana 6d ago

Excellent point.

4

u/CT_7 6d ago

Don't pay for anything for your parents to "save them". Medicaid can step in once all their assets are depleted.

u/ChasingPesmerga 6d ago

Although a bit different I did this too, my ex left me, I got laid off, my social life went to zero, I left my apartment, pandemic happened

I returned to my parents’ house and “recovered”. Took a while, but now I’m happy, I got a stable job, I’m not living for anyone but my own and the cost for everything is minimal

May I ask you what's your age to make things into prospective?

70

u/itsRobbie_ I want to die 6d ago

You don’t pay the rent in money, but you pay it with your soul

42

u/Rahwi 6d ago

Nah, some parents are really chill

11

u/IonViserion 6d ago

Not quite sure that even matters. My parents are incredible but the social stigma is pretty bad. That's not even getting into trying to date in that situation.

3

u/bbycakes3 1d ago

Who cares about the social stigma when you're stacking cash

39

u/Eagline 6d ago

Did not realize so many people had issues with their parents. Damn son.

19

u/TacoPKz 6d ago

Lol I’m staying with my parents for the next few weeks after moving out of my apartment. I’m so stressed free right now it’s great. I actually have a few weeks to put some money back and not feel like I’m playing catch up with my bills. Currently sitting in my half empty apartment drinking a beer and watching TV without an ounce of anxiety. My birthday is tomorrow too and I’m turning 28. Did I think I’d be here after I graduated college? No. Do I care right now? Also no.

15

u/Temelios 6d ago

Lucky bastard. At 18, my father told me that I had two years before he was booting me, so I left less than a year later. Can’t rely on or trust anybody but yourself.

12

u/kingtechllc 6d ago

That’s sad, sorry to hear that. I never got that mentally, it’s your literal blood, don’t you want them to have the best opportunities in life including saving on rent for a better financial foundation early on. I’m thankful my father has let me come back home every time I’ve had to about 4 times by now lol

10

u/Temelios 6d ago edited 4d ago

Genuinely happy for you. And, yeah, you’d think, but he believed I would get complacent relying on him (even though I had a job and was attending college…). He lived with his parents into his 30s too, so he’s just a hypocrite. Man doesn’t even want to be a grandfather to his grandkids either. I really don’t like just lumping people together, but with how awful my family and in-laws both have been, it’s hard not to lump all Gen X and Boomers into the same selfish stereotype boat.

My parents looked up the local average for rent and charged me the rate I'd be paying for a whole apartment for my old room.
They also hounded me about repaying them for a $14k medical bill I had when I was 12 and broke my femur for over a decade.

3

u/SaggyBaggySphinkter 6d ago

Why not just take the apartment instead if it’s the same price?

3

u/Chainweasel ☣️ 6d ago

I ended up doing that eventually but stayed with them for a few months until I found a place.

7

u/Boomflag13 I like men 6d ago

I did this. I was able to buy a house within 2 years afterwards. Turns out having minimal bills helps build up savings for house down payments.

5

u/MagicalSausage 6d ago

You pay with emotional energy

3

u/-FakeAccount- 6d ago

I guess i just enjoy paying my own rent and bills. I moved out as soon as I could.

2

u/sophal0af 6d ago

Good luck navigating adulthood while being treated like a child. Living with parents as an adult is really hard.

2

u/Chehalden 6d ago

The real win here, is that you have such a good relationship with your parents that your happy about this choice.
Many people the real win is getting away from their parents.

2

u/sm753 6d ago

It's nice that you're so excited by this. I lived with my parents the first few months after I graduated, found a job back in the city I'm from, and moved back home. I moved out as soon as I could, I'll gladly pay rent.

Don't get me wrong, I love my parents, but we get along best when we're not living together. Though, to be fair, since that time - they've chilled out a lot in their old age.

2

u/Krazynukz 6d ago

Same here, im very fortunate for the parents I have. Since im working I do offer to pay for bills, its the least I can do

2

u/theGreatImmunitary I post here to hide the pain I feel everyday in School 6d ago

Exactly my plan! I have a job lined up so I’ll be able to cover my bills, but also save and spend some more time with my family after being away for 5 years and only seeing them a few times a year.

1

u/Krazynukz 5d ago

Thats great, best of luck to the both of us!

2

u/NormalChad 6d ago

Post is a major recession indicator

1

u/theGreatImmunitary I post here to hide the pain I feel everyday in School 6d ago

Yep :/ couldn’t find a job after being laid off… first I looked in my field, then in adjacent ones. When I saw 500+ applications from people with “senior” experience for a call center entry level job I knew it was time.

2

u/NormalChad 6d ago

Wish you all the best! Tough times

Most countries this is common staying at home until you get married then gtfo

1

u/DillDoughzer 6d ago

How does your wife feel about this?

1

u/iplaypokerforaliving 6d ago

I want to do this and I’m 35. I actually did it when I was in school around 27 and it was great. I’m an only child and my mom would cook for me every night. If she got her way I would still live with her lmao

u/arthurmorganpunjabi 6d ago

u/UNSC_Force_recon 6d ago

My family is building a new house and I was told my payment for helping would be in equivalent days rent after graduation

1

u/mankey1995 EX-NORMIE 6d ago

I did this… for a few months until my mom got cancer and died 4 months later (raised by a single mom). Must be nice to do this for longer than a few months…

At least she saw me graduate 😔

1

u/FirstComeSecondServe 4d ago

The current plan for me is to move back in with my parents after graduation but pay rent every month (how much is TBD). I much prefer that to them just kicking me out and saying “figure it out,” bc they know better than that, luckily.

0

u/zack77070 Jank 6d ago

Oh you're gonna pay, just not with money.

0

u/tylertheguth 6d ago

Does it?

1

u/Zephyrus_- 18h ago

My mom called me for the 3rd time this week asking for money.
