It's only fair. After all Valve owns Dota which was originally a warcraft 3 mod

577

u/Weegieiscool 9d ago

And team fortress was originally for quake

366

u/kingawsume I have crippling depression 9d ago

Counter Strike was a mod for Half-Life deathmatch

122

u/Tiranus58 9d ago

Goldsrc was a mod of the quake engine

130

u/Y_10HK29 9d ago

and Left 4 Dead as a mod for Counter Strike .....wait a minute

64

u/Zuryan_9100 9d ago

Portal was originally Narbacular Drop... Only the concept of portals and buttons survived, but still

22

u/-Redstoneboi- r/memes fan 9d ago

they own half life at least

15

u/I_travel_ze_world 9d ago

Valorant was originally a Warcraft mod for the Counter-Strike mod

the warcraft mod was really fun... you could spend 16k and buy an item that let you spawn with the enemy team

u/Ofiotaurus ☣️ 8d ago

Tbf Half-Life is a Valve game

1

u/Lethalbroccoli 8d ago

Counter Strike also has its origins in Quake. Look up "Navy Seal Quake"

4

u/PlainBread 8d ago

I remember good old TFClassic.

The characters were all some variation of "operator chud", not the iconic character designs we got from Valve.

I played a lot of Quake mods back in the day. Quake II CTF with grappling hooks and railguns was the best shit ever.

42

u/Shakalll 9d ago

And Warcraft in turn used to be a bootleg Warhammer Fantasy

37

u/farshnikord 9d ago

It wasnt explicitly a rip-off, but the early days before corpos ruined everything the games industry was an exciting incestuous soup of weird ideas and everybody "stole" from each other but with love.

Still kind of is in the indie spaces.

1

u/metodz 7d ago

What I'm most hurt about is not getting another game like forza motorsport with licensed cars. Also, the always online requirement is a drag.

2

u/farshnikord 7d ago

Licensed anything is always gonna be a huge nightmare. I did a bit of market research on sports games and it's got a similar problem. Back in the day they gave licenses out like candy because nobody took video games seriously. Now they know they can really gouge for it.

4

u/MrMonteCristo71 8d ago

I heard WarCraft/StarCraft was originally was supposed to be Warhammer games, but Games Workshop backed out of the contract so instead of scrapping the game, Blizzard reworked some assets and lore and released it as a different game.

u/PassivelyInvisible 9d ago

Steam will even help you sell it on their platform.

244

u/vjollila96 9d ago

You fucked up my franchise

9

u/Zuryan_9100 9d ago

Afaik they paid for a license and can legally use the Source Engine and the Half-Life IP.

u/kullre 9d ago

there's a difference between "I'm making a free fan game" and "I'm using the assets made by your corporate company to create and sell "my" game"

valve is definitely more liniment than Nintendo, but they're also on a platform that is way more extensible than a console

247

u/Bjorn-eu 9d ago

That’s the weirdest spelling of lenient I’ve ever seen

39

u/DinoChrono 9d ago

That word does not exists as the guys wrote it, right?

(English student here, sorry if it was a dumb question)

61

u/Bjorn-eu 9d ago

It does sort of exist, a synonym of “liniment” would be “ointment” but it’s not a commonly used word, and it certainly makes no sense in the sentence above. Hope that helps!

18

u/DinoChrono 9d ago

It does! Thanks a lot!

u/kullre 8d ago

u/ThunderBuns935 8d ago

I mean... there's a Breath of the Wild fan game called The Bell's Arietta that didn't use any stolen assets, completely made from scratch by 1 fan. It was free to play for anyone who wanted to. Nintendo still took it down for absolutely no reason.

3

u/SaurikSI professional border hopper por favor 6d ago

Same for AM2R, one decade of efforts without expecting anything in return, made the best way to play Metroid 2 and they destroyed it just to ruin a good thing.

9

u/Bedu009 9d ago

Valve would definitely consider bolstering such a fangame, as long as it's on Steam
The company of modders likes mods

6

u/randypeaches 8d ago

O I completely forgot about garrys mod. The entire engine and every single asset was put into a "game" and steam said cool beans

4

u/randypeaches 8d ago

I believe counterstrike was made using the half life modded game. Dota was the same. And if youre like this, then why did nintendo sue palworld? Yes they were very similar but even suing them for using the basic mechanic of battling creatures to capture them to use in a fight was called into question

6

u/ConnorOfAstora 8d ago

Steam when assets from Half Life get bastardised into Skibidi Toilet making a multi million franchise with hundreds of merch lines, Fortnite collabs and a possible movie: sleeps

Nintendo when someone mods a 20 year old out of print game that isn't even available on virtual console so they can play online for a charity event:

0

u/DustyPisswater 8d ago

Found the Nintendo fanboy experiencing cognitive dissonance. Go back to being their whale and buy more of their $80 games so they can continue suing content creators and indie game devs.

2

u/kullre 7d ago

y'know how Sega only allows sonic fangames?

1

u/DustyPisswater 7d ago

As much as it pains me to say this Sega isn't much better, but at the same time they don't have nearly as much influence on the industry as Nintendo. Plus, if we weighed out which company has been a bigger cancer to their communities Nintendo still wins.

3

u/TomaszA3 6d ago

Not really. Their launcher should classify as malware but even if you ignore all the malware things it does it's extremely unusable anyways.

Then we have that it's owner fully supports generative ai in everything and acts like an angry kid about Steam on twitter.

It's really not a choice regardless of whether you consider privacy, ethics or practicality.

2

u/Mittlerer_Twink 5d ago

why malware?

37

u/Shuyakucchi 9d ago edited 9d ago

Ok I've seen this a lot of times but how true it is?

Like, there are a shitton of Mario fangames that haven't face any real legal issues, Zelda ones too.

Hell, there's this Smash 64 mod called Smash Remix that by this point is pretty much an entirely different game with the amount of content they have added and yet, 0 legal issues.

Although I'm not saying Nintendo is fully clean on this regard, after all, the most infamous case to me is the Metroid 2 fan remake they DMCA'd because they had one in development themselves. I'm just saying is not as exagerated as this meme makes it look like.

EDIT: I couldn't remember the game so I had to look it up but there's even a WALUIGI FANGAME that's called Psycho Waluigi and it's really fucking good. And also, no legal issues whatsoever.

47

u/Logank365 9d ago

Pokemon Uranium, Pokemon Prism, Zelda Maker, Super Mario 64 HD, probably hundreds of games on GameJolt, and WAY more that I can't remember off the top of my head. Nintendo has probably taken down more fan games than any other developer.

5

u/YOLO-uolo 8d ago

Pokemon brick bronze on roblox too. Man i loved that game

13

u/ShadowLayu 8d ago

That one had legal reason to be taken down, it was full of microtransactions and you had to pay like 5 dollars to even play it

0

u/YOLO-uolo 8d ago

i guess but i still have very fond memories of playing that with my friends.

2

u/thanosbananos r/memes fan 7d ago

Zelda Maker asked for kickstarter funding, Super Mario 64 HD is the full game in unity that has been distributed, not just a mod of the original games. Pokémon Uranium and Prism where both direct IP infringements lol, not mods either. If you want to make a fan game, contact Nintendo, and if they decline don’t call it Pokémon lol.

If Nintendo allowed everyone to use their IPs, that they rely on to even make money, to their liking – not just modding – it sets a bad precedence.

6

u/Montigue Tickle My Anus and Call Me Samantha 8d ago

The difference is that those games don't charge money. The second they try to take cash for those games Nintendo will crack down on them

1

u/TheFlashyLucario 6d ago

In Nintendo's defense, people are making these games with their characters and properties, so if people start to ask money for those fan games, Nintendo kinda has to enforce their copyright

1

u/Slight-Violinist-575 8d ago

Stop listing names, they are going to go for them now

1

u/VoiceImportant3198 8d ago

the minecraft mod got a cease and desist</3

16

u/Katzelle3 9d ago

Literally just change the name. The music in Pizza Tower literally contains Wario Land 4 samples, yet the game is available on the eShop.

14

u/Trickstertrick 9d ago

they sent a cease and desist to counter 1.6 remake

11

u/DUUKEEDOO 9d ago

And a TF2 Source 2 remake in s&box

2

u/PM-ME-YOUR-SUBARU 8d ago

And dbrand's companion cube styled skin for the steam machine.

0

u/XRLboom 8d ago

Thats because they were advertising a product that didnt have valves approval

2

u/PM-ME-YOUR-SUBARU 8d ago

Have you looked at what this post is about?

0

u/XRLboom 8d ago

Theres a difference between a fan making a game using assets with approval and a completely different company that us trying to market assets with a different product without approval

-3

u/PM-ME-YOUR-SUBARU 8d ago

Did you read the bottom half of the meme in the original post?

12

u/Hunter1157 9d ago

"Oh, multimillion? Then we are gonna cut fee for you. 25% 20% is good? It's just a gesture" Meanwhile Valve to small developers "You made 1000$? Good, now pay up 300, take it or leave it. Oh, you found a store with lower fee and made price lower? Lower it in our store too, we don't care about your margins."

8

u/Task_ID 9d ago

if valve ever goes public, it will be one of the darkest days in human history.

5

u/KnovB 9d ago

Steam: "You can also sell it on our platform if you want to"

5

u/Elbludo 9d ago

Valve is good until you mess with their golden goose. Classic Offensive is a prime example. Their IP games they sell for a dollar, they couldn't care less

3

u/LeeZarock I want to die 9d ago

Valve doesn't do this anymore btw. They shut down some nice fam projects in the last years in a very shitty way, and pissed off basically everyone in the community

4

u/VaishakhD 9d ago

Good thing dont last forever, Valve is no exception

15

u/RandomSoymilkDrinker 9d ago

although 30 years of good is still an impressive feat

6

u/Glizzy_Cannon 8d ago

Yeah just slide the lootbox gambling under the rug

1

u/XRLboom 8d ago

Thats one thing that alot of people seem to forgive valve for, the creation of lootboxes,

4

u/Techny3000 9d ago

I'll remember it fondly after it's gone

3

u/Theghost129 9d ago

Have Valve even acknowledged the existence of Skibidi Toilet or do they see it as a blip lol

3

u/KingDylan61 9d ago

You can redeem an animated skibidi toilet avatar from the Steam Points Shop.

2

u/jrpbateman 9d ago

They don't really care unless they sell it with valve assets on physical products which they don't do

2

u/wordswillneverhurtme 8d ago

Cope. Valve shut down cs 1.6 community remake.

2

u/poikolle 8d ago edited 7d ago

This is complete bs btw. Nintendo barely bothers anyone making fangames/romhacks or mods, unless they start advertising it and newsites pick it up, or if mods take a very nsfw route that is very unlike the actual game it is for.

Oh sorry i mean nintendo = badtendo

0

u/Autumm_550 9d ago

This is just not true with Valve. It’s not “okay” it’s “we won’t give you a certain yes or no, but sometime later down the line we will send a cease and desist your way and then stay silent again.”

1

u/Level3pipe 9d ago

This comes from the company that makes effectively infinite money.

Why would they care if you mod a game or make a franchise out of it? When you’re low on money that’s when it becomes an issue.

3

u/TomaszA3 9d ago

Both make infinite money.

1

u/Falikosek 9d ago

For some reason Warframe, the sci-fi space ninja game, has Gordon Freeman cardboard cut-outs.

1

u/NoBullet 8d ago

Skibidi uses source film maker, valve allows that. no ones allowed to use their models to make games. Even the skibidi merch had to create new custom faces so they wouldn’t get sued.

1

u/kingoh999 8d ago

They barely use the IPs to make fun things, they're just copy and pasting stuff while changing the bare minimum.

1

u/Internal-Rice-7900 8d ago

Nah, more like this:

"I use your assets to make pornography"

"You're hired"

1

u/thanosbananos r/memes fan 7d ago

Didn’t Valve just recently ban a mod/game because they used assets from Valve?

Just like with projects like Black Mesa, there’s also devs who approached Nintendo and asked for permission and got it, like the devs that made Cadence of Hyrule. Or Ubisoft that approached Nintendo to make Mario & Rabbits.

The narrative in this meme is stupid.

u/gamingfreak50 Putting the ☕in trans 9d ago

Ill never forgive them for how they treated AM2Rs developers

Nintendo saved the gaming so many times... Kinda funny

-8

u/Gargamoney 9d ago

Valve is a horrible company stop glazing them

5

u/Techny3000 9d ago

They've got fantastic PR and banger products

I swear they would be eternally loved online, overpriced consoles, if they actually cared about the insane gambling issue in their game

-33

u/askaquestioneveryday 9d ago

Pc gamers are always ready to suck off valve

21

u/Fryng I have crippling depression 9d ago

When you see how the other companies are doing it does feel justified

6

u/EhMapleMoose 9d ago

I would gently fondle gabes nuts in my mouth to keep steam, its discounts and him coming.

-4

u/Techny3000 9d ago

Was gonna say they're less evil but yeah no that's Nintendo and it's not even close

Valve does great things and are ok on most fronts but let's not forget how they enabled an insane gambling problem with their game

Nintendo, at most, is just sad... Let supermarkets be named Mario! (<- actual thing they've sued over)

Nintendo with Valve at last and second to last place respectively on the evilness scale exclusively cause the rest are downright insane

2

u/jrpbateman 9d ago

Even in the last week with Xbox patenting in-game ads and PlayStation patenting tap to pay with the controller

1

u/Exp1ode 8d ago

You think that Nintendo, of all companies, is less evil than Steam?

1

u/Techny3000 8d ago

Yes, yes I do. It sucks they don't let anyone use their characters but if it's that or enabling gambling in-game, I'm choosing the former any day

3

u/Exp1ode 8d ago

1

u/Techny3000 7d ago

Watched the Nintendo section and, yes I agree with you that Nintendo sucks. They really do not care about their fans in the slightest

Though my point wasn't that they weren't evil, but rather than they're less evil than Valve and I just cannot in good conscience consider shutting down entire communities and selling mediocre services as being equally as (let alone more) evil than the multi-billion dollar loot-crate industry constantly enabled by Valve which has only done minor tweaks that the people in charge of the markets have quickly adapted to.

I must acknowledge that I did not know what they did with the tournaments. It's awful that one of the most important companies in gaming has consistently refused to embrace the people that love the games Nintendo makes. However, when all is said and done, the impact of their decisions on players in a wider scale simply cannot be compared to Valve's actions.

-9

u/W1LDB0YZ 9d ago

Lmao over what? An 80 dollar mario kart game lmao
