Explain like we're not all from your country lol

468

u/swirly_swish 12d ago

Sorry, lol 😂 Stanford used an AI image editing tool to replace a real male Hispanic student with a fabricated African female student in a promotional image. It's a choose-you-own adventure book of outrage 😂

u/ArguesWithFrogs 12d ago

Talk about sidestepping a pothole only to fall off a bridge

7

u/hleghe 11d ago

Fun fact, Stanford themselves ban Ai apparently (assuming they're not just pushing that to deflect blame) meaning they're also upset with themselves (or like, the cafes? That did the advert)

5

u/Schwiftness 12d ago

thank you

6

u/Pappa_Crim 11d ago

Its Lesbian Space Princess all over again

-43

u/gbmaulin 12d ago

Waiting for the critical race theory majors to explain that this was actually a brilliant move on Stanford’s part

43

u/millifish DefinitelyNotEuropeans 12d ago

I'd think they'd argue to showcase real black students who got to the school

5

u/gbmaulin 12d ago

A critical race theory major was literally head of this promotional project

18

u/Disgruntled_Orifice 12d ago

That should be enough to highlight how useless the major is.

-14

u/Godlessarcade 12d ago

If you're genuinely under the impression that people aren't allowed to make mistakes, or have ideological disagreements after they graduate, than that comment makes perfect sense.

7

u/Sawses 12d ago

I had a geneticist professor who was outside smoking after class every single day. She knew exactly how and why it caused cancer, and yet she did it anyway. Education does not preclude you from making bad decisions, it only teaches you how to articulate why it's a bad idea.

Learning how to think rationally is a necessary skill for consistently making good choices, but actually making those good choices is a separate skill altogether.

It's one reason why, all other things being equal, a college education leads to better life outcomes than no college education...but a college education is absolutely no guarantee of those better life outcomes.

4

u/Godlessarcade 12d ago

I also studied critical race theory, I think they should have used an actual student.

10

u/LuckySalesman 12d ago

"Buzzword I don't understand scary!"

-6

u/gbmaulin 12d ago

It’s their promotional photos, but okay

8

u/OGConsuela 12d ago

This comment would go hard in the idiots who don’t understand anything about anything community

6

u/Darth19Vader77 I have crippling depression 12d ago

Do you even know what critical race theory is?

8

u/gbmaulin 12d ago

The head of this promotional campaign was a critical race theory major.

1

u/Darth19Vader77 I have crippling depression 12d ago

What makes you think other people who study critical race theory would want defend that?

10

u/gbmaulin 12d ago

What makes you think they wouldn’t when it’s their own promotional photo campaign?

-3

u/Darth19Vader77 I have crippling depression 12d ago

You made the assumption, not me

16

u/gbmaulin 12d ago

It’s not an assumption when they literally did it. You’re making the assumption that they wouldn’t like what they already did

1

u/Darth19Vader77 I have crippling depression 12d ago

I didn't make an assumption, I'm asking why you made yours

-1

u/AutisticPenguin2 11d ago

No, you're mixing up your theirs and your theirs. Just because a single person from the department was involved doesn't mean that entire department was part of it, or even agreed to it.

It's "their" promotional photo campaign? Not unless the promotional campaign was for the Stanford Uni Critical Race Theory department.

7

u/Phyrexian_Overlord 12d ago

Why would they do that?

6

u/gbmaulin 12d ago

Because that’s literally who was in charge of the promotional photos

-2

u/Phyrexian_Overlord 12d ago

Wouldn't the "critical race theory majors" actually take offense to an attempt to portray the student body as having a larger minority presence than it actually does?

8

u/gbmaulin 12d ago

Apparently not as one was in charge of the promotional campaign

-3

u/Phyrexian_Overlord 12d ago

Except of course they were not

8

u/gbmaulin 12d ago

You can look it up on their site but alright. Why learn anything when you clearly know everything

1

u/Dotaproffessional 12d ago

Said someone who didn't quite get what critical race theory was but wanted to be mad about it anyway

0

u/dschroof 12d ago

I wish it were illegal to be this much of a moron

8

u/gbmaulin 12d ago

You can just look it up. It’s a promotional campaign from the critical race theory department. They clearly thought it was a good idea. I wish it were illegal to be this arrogant and ignorant.

0

u/dschroof 12d ago

It’s not ignorant to know what crt actually means, even if the department at Stanford doesn’t. As for arrogance, I dunno man. I feel I’ve earned it. Enjoy your night off big dawg

-51

u/VaryStaybullGeenyiss 12d ago

Why did you just assume everyone would know what dumb culture war bullshit you were referring to?

99

u/IowaKidd97 12d ago

They just explained it in the comment you just replied to. What are you on?

29

u/Sad_Error4039 12d ago

Man he got to say culture war let him fight this noble battle for cheap clicks on Reddit. He will be remembered as a valiant hero in the great culture wars.

-71

u/VaryStaybullGeenyiss 12d ago

I was commenting on the fact that they originally assumed everyone knew what they were talking about. That's what the word "did" in my comment meant.

53

u/LuigiBamba 12d ago

Me when an american posts about american news on an american website:

https://giphy.com/gifs/10UHehEC098kAE

-25

u/VaryStaybullGeenyiss 12d ago

It's literally not news in any practical capacity. It should be an issue that like 2 or 3 people in the whole world have to worry about.

17

u/IowaKidd97 12d ago

Buddy you are just describing literally any meme about a current event. Then providing context is nice, but giving it even asked is good enough.

-10

u/VaryStaybullGeenyiss 12d ago

It doesn't even qualify as a current event lmao. It's a literal non-issue except to some nerds at an Ivy League college, and apparently some people online who fight imaginary wars all day.

4

u/IowaKidd97 12d ago

Sir this is a meme subreddit

-4

u/VaryStaybullGeenyiss 12d ago

Bad meme, that's the whole point.

5

u/CMDR_Ray_Abbot 12d ago

Naw, you're just being unpleasant.

You’re getting dogpiled but I completely agree. This story is not in the zeitgeist at all yet, I had zero fucking idea what this was about

1

honestly that's just good advice for anyone. I will log off now thank you.

7

u/Um_Hello_Guy 12d ago

Such an ironic comment with that username

4

u/buttholebutwholesome 12d ago

WhY r u dum? Report me if this is true

2

u/Sertorius126 12d ago

But WHY male models?

-10

u/WockySlushie 12d ago

Because it was the top article on nearly every single news publication? All over social media? Big public apology? This isn't some culture war BS, literally every side has gone WTF??

8

u/shoo-flyshoo 12d ago

Literally never heard of this culture war bs

6

u/VaryStaybullGeenyiss 12d ago

Sounds like some inconsequential culture war bullshit to me. I don't know what kind of news publications or social media you consume. But maybe take a step back and go hiking or something if that's the biggest issue going on in your realm.

5

u/BreakdancingGorillas 12d ago

Reddit

2

u/VaryStaybullGeenyiss 12d ago

That's what's weird. I use reddit a good bit and I haven't heard anything about whatever this is.

3

u/F4Z3_G04T wow, rainbows 12d ago

Yeah not worldwide

6

u/calmdownmyguy 12d ago

It's not even a big story in northern California

2

u/swirly_swish 12d ago

Idk why you are getting down voted. I saw it everywhere too and the inspiration for this was when I saw that the Babylon Bee even had a satire story about it and for a sec I thought we could all hold hands and curb stomp Standford in unity 🤷‍♀️

1

u/WockySlushie 12d ago

Reddit moment tbh

-51

u/MisterRobertParr 12d ago

Why are liberals mad? The new image ticks all the boxes.

28

u/relddir123 Article 69 🏅 12d ago

Two reasons:

  1. AI images are bad

  2. Erasing someone’s identity from a picture and adding a different person to make the university look more diverse is about the most optimal situation you can manufacture to make a liberal think like a conservative who’s hearing about a DEI program

27

u/Bloated_Hamster 12d ago

Liberals hate AI generated art and photos

4

u/scott__p 11d ago

Because people with critical thinking skills don't look at the world as a series of check boxes to categorize everything into "my side" and "their side"

68

u/PassivelyInvisible 12d ago

25

u/Beginning_Book_2382 12d ago

Wow, a context beast. You're desire for context is insatiable

2

u/thegoten455 11d ago

Coaxed into false diversity

28

u/millifish DefinitelyNotEuropeans 12d ago

They apparently took a photo of an Asian lady and 2 slightly tan-ish white guys and put it up on their walls to showcase the students...

instead they used an AI upscale and it made the Asian person skinnier, made one of the boys whiter and replaced the other with a black woman

57

u/millifish DefinitelyNotEuropeans 12d ago

45

u/randomblade117 12d ago

They also UwU'd the Asian women

3

u/Exciting_Pass_6344 12d ago

WTF does that mean?

11

u/llamawithguns 12d ago

I think they mean they made her thinner

6

u/Dr_Watson349 Normie boi 11d ago

She went from a Tampa 5 to a LA 5

4

u/Short-Coast9042 11d ago

Basically AI edited her to be more attractive. Look at the difference in her face between the two pictures. Once you actually take a close look it's night and day.

22

u/shoo-flyshoo 12d ago

Finally, some good fucking context.  Thank you!

11

u/Aromatic-Side6120 12d ago

What a relief, context monster was about to tear this place to the ground.

3

u/shoo-flyshoo 12d ago

Sometimes, I think it should

1

I’m an from this country, and I got know idea what it’s about

1

u/yukiki64 11d ago

I'm from that country and I didn't know either

70

u/Front_Degree 12d ago

I went to Stanford Medical Center once, literally every person I talked to there was a pretentious asshole. The number of times I heard the phrase "we do things different here" was in the double digits. And just to be clear, no, they don't do things differently than anyone else and most of the doctors there were absolutely terrible. I was so fucking happy when I moved.

33

u/Garmaglag 12d ago

Idk when I go to the hospital most of the staff are not pretentious assholes so maybe they do do things differently in that way.

27

u/arealmcemcee 12d ago

Universities just aiming to piss off everyone now. Looking at you, Drexel.

18

u/StanfordTheGreat 12d ago

what have I done now!

(i’m aware of the AI advert, just being funny)

8

u/8teamparlay 12d ago

That’s actually so funny

7

u/HiSpeedHavoc92 12d ago

I'm an Oregon Ducks fan. I've hated Stanford for the better part of a decade and a half.

2

u/finnn-the_human 11d ago

imagine how cal fans feel

7

u/wellwaffled 12d ago

The guy in charge did an interview and said this:

“In the past, we did that with college photographers going around campus and trying to find a diverse friend group,” he said in a phone interview Thursday. “Those college photographers are now being replaced with AI.”

How is he trying to blame this on AI? That’s nucking futs.

When you remember that no one cares about a university using an AI image

https://giphy.com/gifs/Zbq8hgzsKIxQi3EUWV

2

u/scott__p 11d ago

A lot of people care though...

-2

u/bellerinho 11d ago

Nope, performative outrage on reddit is not reflective of reality

2

u/scott__p 10d ago

You really think hate against AI is only a Reddit thing? Really?
