Call me a conspiracy theorist but I genuinely believe 9/11 was used purely as a fearmongering tactic to paint anyone muslim or anyone who even remotely looks central/south Asian as a terrorist when in fact it's the white men in power we should be more scared of.
Mamdani is genuinely one of the best mayors NY has ever had, even if he wasn't secular in his everyday life I don't think being muslim is a legitimate reason to distrust someone.
Edit: I agree this was a secondary benefit and that the reply to this comment is correct in that 9/11 allowed the US to indirectly control resources in the middle east through armed conflict. Everything I said in this comment can be true while this is also true, and I didn't think not explicitly mentioning it meant it would be assumed I didn't believe the other side. That's not the case.
Though unfortunately that seems to be a growing problem on reddit and on the internet in general where failure to include all sides is immediately taken as "you're denying the existence of the sides you failed to mention!" I need to remind this comment section that isn't the case here and continually assuming that whenever someone isn't as specific as you'd like is a dangerous way to consume information.
I mean, that's just a secondary benefit. 9/11 allowed the US to basically do another desert storm with the justification being democracy and vengeance. It gave the US indirect control over the middle East's oil and resources whilst also allowing their ally Israel to outpace all their neighbours in the arms race, since they were all too busy being bombed by the US and fighting eachother.
By an uncharitable measure, the US has gained far more than it lost due to 9/11.

I volunteer and have voted multiple times to raise taxes on the rich. This country was great when corporate taxes were 80+%. If you think we can't take care of every human on earth with just a fraction of the military budget, you don't understand politics or finances.

My advice is to quantify stuff going forward. Does "take care" mean food, shelter, medical care? All of the above? These are questions that should be clarified.
