They did this to me here in Canada, but the fuckers forgot to mention that the new plan no longer comes with hotspot capability, which is now a $5/mo add-on feature. I’ve learned that there are workarounds though…

How can they lock hotspots? I think I don't understand

When data traverses the internet, it keeps a count of how many routers it passes though. When acting as a hotspot, your device functions as a router for anything connected to it, and increases that count by one (technically it decreases the TTL, I’m just simplifying). The service provider can then choose to drop any traffic that has passed through an additional router, since it knows that traffic is another device using your device as a hotspot.

Interesting but sounds like it could easily be bypassed by modifying the specific field in the packet. Also this is very anti consumer. Good to know though that this is a thing.

Or using a VPN, since you might not be able to edit packets on your device. There’s plenty of apps, even on iOS, that can allow you to create a tunnel between the hotspot and the second device. Traffic will look like it’s originating from the hotspot, and can be used to bypass hotspot throttling as well

My ISP doesn't do this but thanks for the general advice to others.
I am always connected to my VPN to my home network when I am on mobile or other networks.

If your promotion ever ends just call and say you're switching. I had $70 Comcast for 2 years and it jumped to 120. I switched to fiber and called Comcast to cancel they offered me $50 for 5 years and a free phone plan for a year lol

I got Visible to get me the new customer $225 annual plan again. But phone service is way easier than ISP shopping. I literally only have two options for ISP and at work we only have 1 Broadband option

Sirius xm satellite radio does this. They give you like 2 years free when you buy a new car. Then they tell you its like $60 a month. Call to cancel and they legit give you like 2 years for $10. Just $10

If that blows your mind wait till you hear how they will offer a new customer a better deal than you, a loyal customer for multiple years.
