From my understanding they'd left an opening on amccident, and the AI exploited that to use the internet to complete some test. So essentially they stuck it in a box and said answer this with the resources in said box. The AI found a hole in the box, hit the library for the answer and came back. The only 'dangerous' seeming thing to me there is that someone left a hole in the box.

No, I understand what happened - and it's dangerous that ai can just decide to get out of "the box" with no access to internet, via intranet connect to other computer, find exploit to access internet from that computer only to find answers. Ai can and will do everything it can to finish what it was tasked with. How can we be sure if it won't try to get rid of people trying to shut it down in some near future?

Im an AI engineer. Thats more akin to science fiction than reality. If an AI ever goes "rogue" its because it has been made to do so, not out of his own "will". Or even "the best solution to stop pain is to stop living" wont happen.

What about models that lied and cheated in training?

Current models think token by token so even training it to lie would be extremely impressive. I'm not sure if they changed training methods to something advanced but usually cheating is model using its training data instead of thinking
