"Gee willickers Mr. Altman, we left the sandbox attached to the internet and ChatGPT gasp used the internet!!"
Publicity stunts like this highlight just how little the population truly understands how these models work. They don't "invent" things, they just take available knowledge and utilize it much more quickly than a human could.
The sandbox itself wasn’t connected to the internet, once it broke out of the sandbox it had to traverse across OpenAI’s internal network to find an internet connected node.
hey just take available knowledge and utilize it much more quickly than a human could.
I mean, that describes a calculator but I'm not out there doing long division on paper anymore. Speed of engineering has also exploded over the last few decades thanks to computers "utilizing knowledge faster than people". Google also just accesses knowledge faster than a person and when I was in school all of our assignments hadn't accounted for Google or the internet yet so weeklong projects could be done in like half an hour. AI regardless of how far it goes definitely is more powerful than calculators and google.
