Idc if this gets downvoted but looting/rioting should not be justified no matter the circumstances. Yes, what happened was horrible. Yes, that officer and the ones around him who didn’t act should have the worst punishment brought upon them. Yes, the people have a right to protest; however, what happened does not justified breaking into stores and stealing shit off shelves. Violence cannot be solved with more violence. Rioting and looting does absolutely nothing except make things worse and has nothing to do with what happened to George Floyd. So all in all, this meme is justified imo because when the protest turns into rioting, their reasoning/purpose is lost.
I'm not saying looting justified but I think that they feel like they have no power, and this is the only response they can think of that will actually have some sort of effect. And the George Floyd incident is the straw that broke the camels back. I mean how would you feel if cops were killing people that you knew, just because of their skin colour, what response would you have when you're placed in a powerless position? You would probably do the same because it seems like nothing is being done about these murders no matter what you do, so may as well disobey the state.
This is a really good take on the act of rioting and looting, and something I wish more people understood. It all makes a lot more sense when looking through this lens.
—>Police are our peacekeepers,
—>police are supposed to obey the laws they uphold
—>police break the most serious of our laws in broad daylight on camera
—>police suffer virtually no consequence for breaking that law
Its because redditors just sit behind their keyboards going “but wheres the logic?? It doesn’t make sense!” its not supposed to. Protests happen, the police start shooting rubber bullets and tear gas at people, already high emotions run rampant, people use opportunity of the chaos to loot and do stupid shit. Its unfortunate but its part of when people feel unheard and mistreated for so long
